Housing Tenure: Pacific Families in New Zealand

Home ownership has been associated with health, social and economic benefits. However, a decline in ownership has been observed over the past decade in New Zealand. Minority groups, including Pacific people, have been disadvantaged in the housing sector. This study investigated housing tenure and the relationship between tenure and health among mothers of a birth cohort of Pacific children in New Zealand. Findings showed that most families lived in state or private rental accommodation with few (15.4 per cent) owning their own homes. Homeowners were more likely to be older, partnered and have higher incomes. Better mental health was observed for homeowners compared to renters. Findings can inform housing and public health policy for Pacific families.     

A new protocol for training severely impaired patients in the usage of memory journals

Although memory disorders are frequently seen in survivors of brain injuries, remediation of patients with severe memory disorders is still relatively neglected in clinical practice due to pessimism by clinicians regarding the efficacy of such remediation. With respect to memory journal training, a further reason for this neglect is likely the lack of readily accessible protocols that therapists can use to work with these patients. The purpose of the present paper is to describe a new memory journal training protocol that was developed to teach brain injury survivors how to compensate for severe memory impairments by using three strengths of most brain injury survivors: immediate attention, procedural memory, and old learning. A training protocol is described that involves baseline testing and a needs assessment, five levels of training exercises, and discharge probe testing. It is concluded that patients with severely impaired memory abilities can learn the present system when care is taken to individualize journals, conduct proper needs assessments, and provide structured training exercises geared to the strengths of memory impaired persons.     

Determination of tablet coating distribution by deconvolution of uncoated and coated tablet weight distributions

PURPOSE: The purpose of this research is to obtain the tablet coating distribution from weight distributions of uncoated and coated tablets. METHODS: The method of deconvolution with digital smoothing was used to calculate the distribution of coating applied to a tablet population from separate random measurements of individual uncoated and coated tablets. RESULTS: It was demonstrated that the calculated coating weight distribution agrees well with the measured distribution. The effect of the smoothing factor on the solution is illustrated. CONCLUSIONS: This method can be used during development to facilitate process scale-up/optimization. In routine production, the method can assess the reproducibility and consistency of a coating process.     

Analysis and comparison of real-time sine-wave generation for PWMcircuits

Four methods for hardware and software generation in real time of sine waves suitable for PWM circuits are presented. The sine waves are derived from a truncated modified cosine Taylor series, wt(π-wt) function, a digitally filtered trapezoid, and a second-order differential equation. Triplen injection is incorporated by the addition of a defined magnitude triangular waveform of three times the fundamental frequency. Each sine wave generating technique is implemented, as applicable, in a programmable logic cell array and/or in microprocessor-based software. In each case, the output spectra and total harmonic distortion are compared with computer-simulated results     

A strain hardening failure assessment diagram derived from carbon-manganese steel compact tension specimens

A failure assessment diagram is derived from carbon-manganese steel compact tension specimens. The diagram has been determined from an elastic-plastic finite element analysis of a compact tension specimen geometry. The diagram has been validated by using experimental fracture toughness data obtained on the same steel and specimen geometry modelled in the finite element analysis. The plastic collapse load has been determined empirically for this geometry.It is shown that a non-work-hardening failure assessment diagram is not a good representation of the experimental data and that the computed failure assessment diagram is more appropriate for describing the behaviour of the carbon-manganese steel specimens.
