X-ray or UV adjustment of MOS threshold voltage: Analytical and numerical modeling

A model is formulated that describes how radiation-induced charge accumulates in the gate oxide of a MOS structure and how it decays through tunneling and thermal emission. The model is used in a numerical analysis of the x-ray or UV adjustment of threshold voltage in MOS-circuit manufacture. The limits of this process technique are evaluated.     

Plaque herniation through an intracoronary stent

We present a case where a Wiktor intracoronary stent was inserted for 'poor angiographic result' following balloon angioplasty. Despite appropriate positioning and repeated dilation of the stent a suboptimal result was achieved because of plaque herniation through the stent. The case emphasizes that the choice of stent used is important and will become more so as the number of choices available increases.     

Microwave beam imaging by recombination continuum from the positive column of gas discharge in a cesium vapor-xenon mixture

A new sensitive method for imaging of the spatial distribution of microwave intensity is proposed. The method is based on the imaging of the 6P-recombination continuum of cesium, emitted from a nonequilibrium plasma of the positive column of gas discharge in a cesium vapor-xenon mixture. It is demonstrated that the spatial distribution of intensity of 35-GHz microwave radiation measured by this method in a focal plane of a lens well coincides with the pattern obtained with the aid of a movable microwave detector. The time resolution of the proposed microwave imaging system reaches 1 ms.     

Reducing the effects of transmission impairments in digital fiberoptic systems

The major impairments in lightwave systems and the signal-processing techniques that can be used to reduce these impairments are discussed. Guidelines for the use of these techniques are presented. These guidelines are used to determine the techniques with the most potential for providing improved performance in long-haul systems, local-area networks, and local loop systems. Although many of the techniques have been previously considered for these applications, few have been implemented in commercial products. Some of the most promising techniques include dispersion-compensating fibers, polarization control, nonlinear cancellation (NLC), and coding for reducing the effect of distortion in long-haul single-frequency-laser direct-detection systems
