Studied gender differences in the factor structure of the Basic Interest Scales (BISs) across time. Nine correlation matrices, previously published in support of the BISs on the Strong Vocational Interest Blank–Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory, were factor analyzed. Results describe a clear factor structure for the Basic Interest Scales. However, scale loadings did not support General Occupational Theme classifications of BISs. Similarities between men and women were observed in extracted factors and BISs with low communality estimates. Gender differences were found for between-factor correlations. A relatively stable factor structure was traced over time and was found to exist prior to the employment of women in traditionally restricted male occupations. Developed 2 forced-choice, self-report scales for adolescents called Pseudoautonomy and Peer-Group Dependence with concepts from the self psychology of H. Kohut (1971, 1977). An original set of 47 grandiosity and 48 idealization items were administered to 114 psychiatric inpatients (mean age 15.5 yrs) and 118 high school students (mean age 16 yrs). Analysis showed that both scales were significant predictors of group membership; the overall classification attempt was correct 73% of the time; and the correlation between the scales was low. Experimentally it has been proved the expediency of using biosorption and aeration for purification of wastewaters polluted with oil products. Using method of biotesting it was established that applying biosorption technology of purifying wastewaters polluted with oil products, one cannot observe an ecological risk for hydroecosystems. Both more successful and less successful readers appear to use the selective attention strategy (SAS) to learn important text information; however, more successful readers tend to learn and recall considerably more important, as well as unimportant, information. The 2 studies reported here investigated the reason(s) for the more successful readers' learning and recall advantage. In Exp 1, 10th graders were asked to read, learn, and recall information from a text on marine biology. Questions were inserted every 4 pages to manipulate text item importance. The results showed that more successful readers learned and recalled more important information than less successful readers because they were more metacognitively aware of how and when to use the SAS. In Exp 2, perceptual and conceptual attention were measured for both more and less successful readers. Studied the role of self-efficacy in mediating gender differences on Investigative and Realistic General Occupational Themes of the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory. Ss were 77 male and 71 female entering university freshmen. Canonical correlations identified a science/technical factor relating high Investigative and Realistic theme standard scores to high Investigative and Realistic theme efficacy ratings. Path analyses suggested a correlational structure wherein mathematics self-efficacy and high school mathematics preparation mediated gender differences on these themes. Implications for counselor interpretation of Investigative and Realistic General Occupational Themes were presented. The importance of integrating self-efficacy career development research and traditional self-concept vocational theory was emphasized. Professional psychologists on college campuses and independent practitioners in university communities have expressed concerns that the problems of university students who seek counseling have worsened in recent years. Initial client intake data gathered from 2,326 students during 1989 to 1995 at a large Midwestern university counseling center were analyzed using P. P. Heppner et al's (1994) multivariate classification scheme. Patterns of serious client concerns were evident over the 6 years analyzed. Findings suggest that professional training for psychologists who will work with university populations should include training on suicidality, psychopathology, and crisis intervention as well as working within a team or community-based orientation.
