There's more to touch than meets the eye: The salience of object attributes for haptics with and without vision.

The availability and salience of object attributes under haptic exploration, with and without vision, were assessed by 2 tasks in which Ss sorted objects that varied factorially in size, shape, texture, and hardness. In the directed-discrimination task, Ss were instructed to sort along a particular dimension. Although levels on all dimensions were easily discriminated, shape was relatively less so for haptic explorers without vision, as was hardness for those using vision and haptics. Size was least discriminable for both groups. In the free-sorting task, Ss were to sort objects by similarity. Three groups used haptic exploration only; these were differentiated by the experimenters' definition of object similarity: unbiased haptics, haptically biased haptics, haptics plus visual imagery. A 4th group used vision as well as haptics, with instructions like those of the unbiased haptics group. Results support the contention that the haptic and visual systems have distinct encoding pathways, with haptics oriented toward the encoding of substance rather the shape. Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine in children with chronic renal disease: a prospective study of antibody response and duration

We studied the antibody response to pneumococcal serotypes 3 and 14 after pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine was administered to 41 children with renal disease. One month after vaccination, 76% and 61% of patients achieved at least a twofold titer rise to serotypes 3 and 14, respectively; this finding was comparable to historic control values. One year after vaccination, the majority of patients retained protective antibody levels. Achieving a titer > or = 1.0 microgram/ml IgG at 1 month was highly predictive of retaining a protective antibody level > or = 0.15 microgram/ml at 1 year.     

Hepatitis G virus RNA is common in AIDS patients'' plasma but is not associated with abnormal liver function tests or other clinical syndromes

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether postmenopausal oestrogen replacement therapy affects carotid artery pulsatility index. DESIGN: A prospective double-blind placebo controlled trial. SETTING: University associated teaching hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-eight postmenopausal women who were more than 12 months postmenopausal and who had not taken exogenous oestrogen. INTERVENTIONS: Independent randomisation to receive oral oestradiol (2 mg daily) or placebo for 20 to 24 weeks. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Internal carotid artery Doppler pulsatility index, measured within one centimetre of the carotid bifurcation. RESULTS: Replicate data were available from 27 women. The mean pulsatility index decreased by -0.11 in 15 women receiving oestradiol, compared with a mean rise of 0.05 in the 12 women who received placebo (P = 0.006, 95% CI for treatment difference 0.06-0.31). CONCLUSIONS: Oestrogen replacement decreases postmenopausal carotid artery pulsatility index, probably reflecting decreased peripheral vascular resistance. This is a further mechanism whereby hormone replacement therapy may impart cardiovascular protection.     

All-trans beta-carotene is absorbed preferentially to 9-cis beta-carotene, but the latter accumulates in the tissues of domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius puro)

The algae Dunaliella bardawil and Dunaliella salina naturally contain large concentrations of all-trans and 9-cis beta-carotene (betaC). The purpose of this study was to compare the relative serum and tissue accumulation of all-trans and 9-cis betaC in ferrets fed different ratios of all-trans/9-cis betaC derived from two commercial sources, D. bardawil or D. salina (Betatene). Male ferrets (7 wk old) were fed carotene-free, pelleted diets for 27 d. Beginning on d 18, groups of ferrets (n = 6 or 7) received daily, one of six oral supplements varying in ratios of 9-cis and all-trans betaC mixed with approximately 1.0mL of Ensure. Four supplements containing 5.2-8.3 micromol total betaC were prepared from a 20% Betatene preparation, D. bardawil, a high-cis Betatene preparation, and Betatene further enriched in 9-cis betaC with all-trans betaC/9-cis betaC ratios of 2.2, 1.5, 0.6 and 0.4, respectively. Two control supplements, high and low betaC, were prepared from commercial betaC beadlets. The high control supplement had an all-trans/9-cis ratio of 19.0, whereas 9-cis betaC was not detected in the low supplement. On d 27, serum and tissues were obtained for HPLC analysis of betaC and its isomers. Analysis of livers showed that all-trans betaC was the primary isomer present, but 9-cis and other isomers were also detected in all groups. The hepatic all-trans/9-cis ratios were 5.9, 4.9, 2.5, 1.4, 52.2 and47.5, respectively, for the groups listed above. Lower amounts of all-trans and 9-cis betaC were found in kidneys compared with the liver, but ratios of all-trans/9-cis were not different among groups. Only trace amounts of 9-cis betaC were found in serum. These results demonstrate that the algae D. bardawil and D. salina provide a bioavailable source of betaC isomers, but, as in humans, absorption of 9-cis betaC is poor and any 9-cis betaC absorbed is apparently cleared by the liver.     

A Unified Variational Volume Registration Method Based on Automatically Learned Brain Structures

We introduce a new volumetric registration technique that effectively combines active surfaces with the finite element method. The method simultaneously aligns multi-label automatic structural segmentation results, which can be obtained by the application of existing segmentation software, to produce an anatomically accurate 3D registration. This registration is obtained by the minimization of a single energy functional. Just like registering raw images, obtaining a 3D registration this way still requires solving a fundamentally ill-posed problem. We explain through academic examples as well as an MRI dataset with manual anatomical labels, which are hidden from the registration method, how the quality of a registration method can be measured and the advantages our approach offers.     

The Growing Role of Transportation Funding in Regional Habitat Conservation Planning

Problem, research strategy, and findings: Regional conservation initiatives struggle to meet funding needs when complying with the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1996 and need money early to pay for required planning and to acquire land to mitigate the impact of development. Transportation agencies struggle to comply with the ESA and have increasingly been willing to fund regional habitat conservation plans (RHCPs) to do so. We review documents from 22 RHCPs and interview representatives of 16 RHCPs to understand how transportation agencies have contributed to funding RHCPs. We find that transportation agencies mitigate their impacts and provide early and consistent financing to facilitate the planning process, help RHCPs establish initial conservation preserves, and allow RHCPs to capitalize on lower land prices during downturns in the development market. We only sample RHCPs in a few states, however, and these examples may not comply with laws in others. Many of the cases studied are recent; time is needed to assess their long-term success. We recommend further study to assess applications to sectors beyond transportation and beyond the areas we studied.

Takeaway for practice: Transportation agencies have struggled to meet environmental requirements and habitat conservation agencies have typically considered transportation agencies threats to the environment. Where adversarial relationships can be overcome, partnerships between transportation and conservation programs can effectively finance habitat conservation while facilitating capital investments in transportation systems.     

Blood speed imaging with an intraluminal array

In applications in which Doppler processing is not possible, such as side-looking intravascular imaging systems, decorrelation methods can be used to estimate blood speed. Here, a method is presented measuring relative blood speed using an FIR filter bank to estimate temporal decorrelation rates. It can be implemented in a modern commercially available ultrasound imaging system with no additional hardware. Both simulations and experiments using an intraluminal scanner appropriate for coronary artery applications have tested the system. In this study, the FIR filter bank is contrasted with previous methods, and its utility is further demonstrated with real-time color flow images from a pig model.     

An investigation into the feasibility of myoglobin-based single-electron transistors

Myoglobin single-electron transistors were investigated using nanometer-gap platinum electrodes fabricated by electromigration at cryogenic temperatures. Apomyoglobin (myoglobin without the heme group) was used as a reference. The results suggest single-electron transport is mediated by resonant tunneling with the electronic and vibrational levels of the heme group in a single protein. They also represent a proof-of-principle that proteins with redox centers across nanometer-gap electrodes can be utilized to fabricate single-electron transistors. The protein orientation and conformation may significantly affect the conductance of these devices. Future improvements in device reproducibility and yield will require control of these factors.     

Haptic integration of planar size with hardness, texture, and planar contour.

Three experiments involving a total of 75 college students investigated the role of size information in haptic classification of custom-made planar objects when size covaries with hardness, texture, or planar contour. Exp 1 showed facilitation of classification by redundant (RD) size and shape cues, indicating the coprocessing of size and shape. Exps 2 and 3 used a withdrawal paradigm: Classification trials began with 2 RD properties, and 1 was then held constant (withdrawn). Exp 2 showed that when size and shape were RD, withdrawal of either impaired responses, whereas when size was RD with texture or hardness, only size withdrawal had an effect.
