Proton-exchanged optical waveguides have been fabricated in z-cut LiNbO/sub 3/ using a new proton source: stearic acid. These waveguides were characterized optically and were found to exhibit a step index profile with Delta n=0.118 measured at 0.633 mu m. The propagation losses were typically around 1.5 dB/cm, and the diffusion constant and the activation energy for the proton-exchange process were measured to be 5*10/sup 6/ mu m/sup 2//h and 69 kJ/mol, respectively.<> 相似文献

Proton-exchanged planar waveguides were demonstrated in Z-cut LiNBO/sub 3/ using toluic acid as a new organic proton source. These waveguides exhibit a propagation loss of around 1 dB/cm, and a step refractive index profile with an index increase of 0.124 measured at 0.663 mu m. Different particulate solids such as glass powder, various types of activated carbon and bentonite suspended in Thiobacillus ferrooxidans cultures produce very different effects on the oxidizing activity of the microorganism. The atmospheric oxygen uptake by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in Warburg respirometer flasks containing 9K medium with ferrous sulfate as energy source and suspended bentonite is 2.8 times that in the absence of solids. The dissolution rate of pure pyrite in 250 cm3 shake flasks containing 9K medium and bentonite is considerably enhanced over that where the only solid phase is pyrite. Conversely, the oxidizing ability of the microorganism seems to be inhibited by all the activated carbons tested. The effect of ground glass seems to be related to its particle size distribution. Implications for the bioleaching of sulfide ores and coal pyrite are discussed in the light of current knowledge on the adsorption of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans cells on solid surfaces. 相似文献

This paper presents a direct complementarity approach for carrying out the elastoplastic analysis of plane stress and plane strain structures. Founded on a traditional finite‐step formulation, our approach, however, avoids the typically cumbersome implementation of iterative predictor–corrector procedures associated with the ubiquitous return mapping algorithm. Instead, at each predefined step, the governing formulation—cast in its most natural mathematical programming format known as a mixed complementarity problem—is directly solved by using a complementarity solver run from within a mathematical modeling system. We have chosen the industry‐standard General Algebraic Modeling System/PATH mixed complementarity problem solver that is called from within the General Algebraic Modeling System environment. We consider both von Mises and Tresca materials, with perfect or hardening (kinematic and isotropic) behaviors. Our numerical tests, five (benchmark) examples of which are presented in this paper, have been carried out using models constructed from the mixed finite element of Capsoni and Corradi (Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Eng. 1997; 141 :67–93), which beneficially offers a locking‐free behavior and coarse‐mesh accuracy. The results indicate, in addition to an isochoric locking‐free behavior, good accuracy and the ability to circumvent the difficult singularity problem associated with the corners of Tresca yield surfaces. Recently, the use of a ferromagnetic material in a soft‐heating method has garnered much attention as a novel method for cancer treatment. By concurrently using this material as a thermal probe, we are currently developing a minimally invasive heating and wireless temperature measurement system. To make the approach feasible in a clinical setting, it is vital to overcome the key challenge of heating the local tumor at a constant temperature. In previous conventional approaches, it was necessary to switch the induction‐heating power supply on/off after the target tumor temperature was reached. However, it cannot determine the temperature of the material during the power‐off period. Therefore, we changed this approach and found that by adjusting the distance between the heating coil and the material while maintaining a constant current flow in heating coil, the drift problem, which happened just after power is supplied during the on/off operation, did not occur any longer. Accordingly, it was not required to use multiple sensors to reduce the drift, thereby minimizing the cost. This study verifies the validity of our wireless thermometry approach while performing rotary scanning and proposes a technique for determining achievement of the target temperature. This paper presents a steady-state analysis of a novel single-phase self-regulated self-excited induction generator which employs a three-phase machine. Performance equations are derived using the method of symmetrical components, while the pattern search method of Hooke and Jeeves is used for the determination of the machine variables. The advantages of the generator include simple circuit configuration, small voltage regulation, good phase balance, and large power output. With an appropriate choice of the series and shunt capacitances, a nearly balanced operating condition can be obtained for a certain load. The architecture of a field-programmable gate-array (FPGA) implementation of a low-density parity-check (LDPC) decoder for the Digital Video Broadcasting – Second Generation via Satellite (DVB-S2) standard is presented. Algorithms are devised to systematically apply the values given in DVB-S2 to implement a memory mapping scheme, which allows for 360 functional units (FUs) to be used in decoding and supports both normal and short frames. A design of a parity-check module (PCM) is presented that verifies the parity-check equations of the LDPC codes. Furthermore, a special characteristic of five of the codes defined in DVB-S2 and their influence on the decoder design is discussed.Two versions of the LDPC decoder are synthesized for two families of FPGAs. The results show that the decoder presented uses fewer hardware resources than a DVB-S2 LDPC decoder found in the current literature that also uses FPGA, while improving the maximum frequency of the decoder. 相似文献

Single-phase operation of a three-phase induction generator with the Smith connection (SMIG) is analyzed using the method of symmetrical components. It is shown that, despite the asymmetrical nature of the winding connection, balanced currents can be made to flow in the three-phase stator winding. The conditions for achieving perfect phase balance are carefully deduced. With the aid of a phasor diagram, expressions for the line power factor and line current under perfect phase balance are also obtained. The effect of the phase-balancing capacitances on the generator performance is investigated. A simple dual-mode control scheme is also proposed with a view of minimizing the phase imbalance over the practical operating speed range. This paper presents a novel mathematical programming approach for the static stability analysis of structures with uncertainties within the framework of FEM. The considered uncertain parameters are material properties, geometry of element cross section, and loading conditions, all of which are described by an interval model. The proposed method formulates the two cases of interest, namely, worst and best buckling load calculation, into a pair of mathematical programming problems. Two straightforward advantages are exhibited by such formulations. The first advantage is that the proposed formulation can overcome the interference on the sharpness of bounds of the buckling load due to the interval dependence issue. The second benefit is that the information of uncertain parameters causing the extremities of buckling load can always be retrieved as by‐products of the uncertain stability analysis. Some numerical examples are presented to illustrate the capability of the proposed method on various structures and the sharpness of the bounds of the buckling load factors. The efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method are also demonstrated through comparison with the classical Monte Carlo simulation method. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献
