The steroid hormone estradiol (E2) elicits a spectrum of systemic and uterotropic responses in vivo. For example, E2 treatment of ovariectomized adult and sexually immature rodents leads to uterine leukocytic infiltration, cell proliferation, and organ growth. E2-regulated growth is also associated with a variety of normal and pathological phenotypes. Historically, the uterine growth response has been used as the key model to understand the molecular and biochemical mechanisms underlying E2-dependent growth. In this study, genome exclusion mapping identified two quantitative trait loci (QTL) in the mouse, Est2 and Est3 on chromosomes 5 and 11, respectively, that control the phenotypic variation in uterine wet weight. Both QTL are linked to a variety of E2-regulated genes, suggesting that they may represent loci within conserved gene complexes that play fundamental roles in mediating the effects of E2. Interaction and multiple trait analyses using the uterine leukocyte response and wet weight suggest that Est4, a QTL on chromosome 10, may encode an interacting factor that influences the quantitative variation in both responses. Our results show that E2-dependent responses can be genetically controlled and that a genetic basis may underlie the variation observed in many E2-dependent phenotypes. 相似文献

The clinical and radiographic records of 23 patients (15 women, eight men) with rapidly destructive hip disease (RDHD) were retrospectively reviewed. Criteria for RDHD included a history of hip pain of 1-6 months duration and the radiographic appearance of a rapidly progressive atrophic form of bone destruction involving both the femoral head and the acetabulum. Radiographs of the remainder of the appendicular skeleton were assessed in 14 patients. The mean patient age was 72 years. The average time from clinical presentation to the appearance of severe hip destruction was 14 months. Five patients demonstrated similar atrophic bone destruction around other articulations. No patients had clinical or laboratory evidence of sepsis or neurologic disease. Although previous reports have suggested that RDHD is degenerative in nature, similar involvement of other articulations suggests that it may represent a focal finding of a more generalized process. 相似文献

An investigation was made of the growth of the intermediate phase aluminum antimonide (AlSb) in solid aluminum-solid antimony
diffusion couples, AlSb being the only intermediate phase present in the equilibrum phase diagram. Most diffusion couples
were assembled from polycrystalline aluminum and antimony, but a few were made from single crystals; the diffusion couple
surfaces were prepared in a variety of ways and the couples were isothermally annealed at temperatures between 450° and 615°C.
It was found in all cases that AlSb nucleates at the original interface and after sufficient time coalesces into a highly
irregular layer, irrespective of the details of the surface treatment. In several cases in which limited nucleation of AlSb
took place, the morphology of the crystals was such as to suggest that the observed anisotropic growth was related to the
zinc-blende crystal structure of the AlSb.

This three-part series on health legislation describes the policy shift toward regulating the private healthcare system to ensure adequate consumer protection and access to health insurance. Still burning from the failed 1993-1994 healthcare reform effort, Congress and the White House are looking only for incremental policies necessary to reduce the federal deficit and protect the public while the private healthcare system continues to undergo major transformation. In previous articles, the author discussed Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal program revisions and consumer protection legislation aimed at unacceptable managed cure practices. Analyzing the main indices of tuberculosis epidemiology among the convicts showed that there is 1 steady-state upward trend of its morbidity, mortality, bacillary forms. The latters are characterized by the extent of tuberculosis and its severity, which is suggestive of a large infection reservoir among the convicts. This is due to deteriorating macro- and microsocial factors, so this situation should be considered to be extremely explosive both for the convicts and for the general population of the country. 相似文献

Recent advances in magnetic nanocomposites have enabled untethered micromachines with controllable shape transformations and programmable magnetic anisotropy, paving the way for a variety of biomedical applications using soft microrobots. Magnetic anisotropy is programmed by assembling the embedded magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in polymeric materials to overcome the shape anisotropy of a given structure. However, this approach is questionably effective in reconfigurable structures, as shape changes naturally result in rearrangement of the embedded MNPs. A naturally occurring solution to this problem is found in magnetotactic bacteria, which build chains of MNPs in a linear‐chain formation in their cells to create a permanent magnetic dipole moment. This dipole moment enables them to actively sense magnetic fields and coordinate their movement in response, a behavior called magnetotaxis. Inspired by this, self‐folding micro‐origami swimmers comprising magnetic nanocomposite bilayer structures that exhibit controllable shape transformations and programmable, shape‐independent magnetotaxis is fabricated. A study of these structures reveals that their magnetic anisotropy results from competition or cooperation between anisotropy of assembled chains of MNPs and overall shape anisotropy. Moreover, how the magnetotaxis of the reconfigurable micro‐origami swimmers depends only on the embedded permanent dipole moment, independent of the overall magnetic anisotropy, is demonstrated. 相似文献

Cognitive models of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) assert that memory processes play a significant role in PTSD (see e.g., Ehlers & Clark, 2000). Intrusive reexperiencing in PTSD has been linked to perceptual processing of trauma-related material with a corresponding hypothesized lack of conceptual processing. In an experimental study that included clinical participants with and without PTSD (N = 50), perceptual priming and conceptual priming for trauma-related, general threat, and neutral words were investigated in a population with chronic trauma-induced complaints as a result of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. The study used a new version of the word-stem completion task (Michael, Ehlers, & Halligan, 2005) and a word-cue association task. It also assessed the role of dissociation in threat processing. Further evidence of enhanced perceptual priming in PTSD for trauma stimuli was found, along with evidence of lack of conceptual priming for such stimuli. Furthermore, this pattern of priming for trauma-related words was associated with PTSD severity, and state dissociation and PTSD group made significant contributions to predicting perceptual priming for trauma words.
