Echography in congenital intestinal obstruction in newborn infants

The authors used echography in order to reveal typical echographic signs of high and low bowel obstruction in 51 newborns. Although the use of echography often fails to establish the real cause of the bowel obstruction, it allows the determination of its level and in general promotes making the proper diagnosis.     

Performance of double distillation in purifying liquid ammonia for use in thermal tubes

The effect of inhibitors of arachidonic acid metabolism on proliferation and death of tumor cells

We describe a distinctive tissue artifact that results from the use of biopsy bags for processing small impressionable pieces of tissue. In its fully developed form, the artifact produces a tic-tac-toe pattern, while in less pronounced cases it may produce elongated oval spaces in the tissue or a serrated contour at the periphery of the tissue. The artifact was observed in 60% of endometrial specimens, 55% of endocervical curettings, and sporadically in other small specimens. In the endometrial and endocervical specimens, the artifact was focal and did not interfere with the diagnosis. In occasional small lung and prostate specimens, there was focally significant distortion that potentially could compromise the diagnosis.     

Effect of consecutive administration of obsidan and novodrin on pulmonary circulation in anesthesized dogs

It was established in experiments on mongrel anesthesized dogs that the beta-blocking agent obsidan (propranolol) in a dose of 0.5-1.0 mg/kg causes an increase in total pulmonary and pulmono-arteriole resistance, which correlates with the decrease in volume blood flow in the pulmonary arteries. The pressure in the pulmonary artery and the left atrium does not change substantially. Injection of 0.25-0.5 mg of novodrin increases the volume blood flow, causes no effect on pressure in the left atrium, and reduces total pulmonary resistance. The changes occurring in pulmonary circulation under the effect of beta-adrenergic agents depend on their primary action on cardiac activity whereas the increase in total pulmonary and pulmono-arteriole resistance depends on the secondary spasm of the pulmonary vessels.
