We study the expected performance of the proposed fundamental neutron physics beamline at the upgraded High Flux Isotope Reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A curved neutron guide transmits the neutrons from the new cold source into a guide hall. A novel feature of the proposed guide is the use of vertical focussing to increase the flux for experiments that require relatively small cross-section beams. We use the simulation code IB to model straight, multi-channel curved, and tapered guides of various m values. Guide performance for the current NPDGamma and proposed abBA experiments is evaluated.  相似文献

Monte Carlo simulations are being performed to design and characterize the neutron optics components for the two fundamental neutron physics beamlines at the Spallation Neutron Source. Optimization of the cold beamline includes characterization of the guides and benders, the neutron transmission through the 0.89 nm monochromator, and the expected performance of the four time-of-flight choppers. The locations and opening angles of the choppers have been studied using a simple spreadsheet-based analysis that was developed for other SNS chopper instruments. The spreadsheet parameters are then optimized using Monte Carlo techniques to obtain the results presented in this paper. Optimization of the 0.89 nm beamline includes characterizing the double crystal monochromator and the downstream guides. The simulations continue to be refined as components are ordered and their exact size and performance specifications are determined.  相似文献

Variable reports of neuropsychological deficits in individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) may, in part, be attributable to methodological limitations. In this study, these limitations were addressed by controlling for genetic and environmental influences and by assessing the effects of comorbid depression and mode of illness onset. Specifically, the researchers conducted a co-twin control study of 22 pairs of monozygotic twins, in which 1 twin met strict criteria for CFS and the co-twin was healthy. Twins underwent a structured psychiatric interview and comprehensive neuropsychological assessment evaluating 6 cognitive domains. Results indicated that twin groups had similar intellectual and visual memory functioning, but fatigued twins exhibited decreases in motor functions (p = .05), speed of information processing (p = .02), verbal memory (p = .02), and executive functioning (p = .01). Major depression did not affect neuropsychological functioning among fatigued twins, although twins with sudden illness onset demonstrated slowed information processing compared with those with gradual onset (p = .01). Sudden onset CFS was associated with reduced speed of information processing. If confirmed, these findings suggest the need to distinguish illness onset in future CFS studies and may have implications for treatment, cognitive rehabilitation, and disability determination. A surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate containing silver particles was prepared by an acid-catalyzed sol-gel method. Silver nitrate was first doped into the sol-gel film followed by chemical reduction of the silver ions with sodium borohydride to produce silver particles. This silver-doped sol-gel substrate exhibits strong enhancement of Raman scattering from adsorbed uranyl ions with a detection limit of 8.5 x 10(-8) M, which is comparable to existing methods of uranyl detection such as spectrophotometry, fluorometry, and a SERS method based on ligand-modified solution silver colloids. However, in the present method, no preconcentration steps, chromogens, or complexing ligands are needed. Compared with the SERS method using Ag colloidal sols, the silver-doped sol-gel film has the advantage that the silver particles trapped in the sol-gel matrix are much more stable than Ag colloids in liquid media. Furthermore, porous silica sol-gel materials are known to have affinities toward many inorganic and organic molecules. The enhanced adsorption affinities could also lead to the increased SERS sensitivity. The performance of the new silver-doped sol-gel substrate was evaluated with uranyl ions and compared to that of a SERS substrate based on silver-coated silica beads prepared by vacuum deposition. The detection limit for the silver-doped sol-gel film was 104 times lower than that for the silver-coated silica beads. The sol-gel substrate was further used to obtain, for the first time, the surface-enhanced Raman spectrum of neptunyl ions in dilute aqueous solutions.  相似文献

Diffraction gratings are mainly manufactured by mechanical ruling, interference lithography, or resin replication, which generally require expensive equipment, complicated procedures, and a stable environment. We describe the controlled growth of self-organized microscale ZnO comb gratings by a simple one-step thermal evaporation and condensation method. The ZnO combs consist of an array of very uniform, perfectly aligned, evenly spaced and long single-crystalline ZnO nanowires or nanobelts with periods in the range of 0.2 to 2 microm. Diffraction experiments show that the ZnO combs can function as a tiny three-beam divider that may find applications in miniaturized integrated optics such as three-beam optical pickup systems.  相似文献

Silver-coated zeolite A and zeolite NaX crystal films prepared by vacuum deposition were investigated as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates. The substrates were active for the enhancement of Raman scattering from uranyl ions. A detection limit of 10(-5) M for uranyl was obtained using silver-coated zeolite A films. One advantage of these zeolite-based substrates is that the negatively charged microporous framework provides the selectivity for adsorption based on static electric charges. The SERS effects of positively charged uranyl ions and neutrally charged benzoic acid were compared. For the zeolite A substrate, there was a 100-times-greater sensitivity.  相似文献

Potential toxicity from exposure to mercury vapor (Hg(o)) from dental amalgam fillings is the subject of current public health debate in many countries. We evaluated potential central nervous system (CNS) toxicity associated with handling Hg-containing amalgam materials among dental personnel with very low levels of Hg(o) exposure (i.e., urinary Hg <4 microg/l), applying a neurobehavioral test battery to evaluate CNS functions in relation to both recent exposure and Hg body burden. New distinctions between subtle preclinical effects on symptoms, mood, motor function, and cognition were found associated with Hg body burden as compared with those associated with recent exposure. The pattern of results, comparable to findings previously reported among subjects with urinary Hg >50 microg/l, presents convincing new evidence of adverse behavioral effects associated with low Hg(o) exposures within the range of that received by the general population.  相似文献

Recent progress in the layer-by-layer surface modification of oxides for the preparation of highly active and stable gold nanocatalysts is briefly reviewed. Through a layer-by-layer surface modification approach, the surfaces of various catalyst supports including both porous and nonporous silica materials and TiO2 nanoparticles were modified with monolayers or multilayers of distinct metal oxide ultra-thin films. The surface-modified materials were used as supports for Au nanoparticles, resulting in highly active nanocatalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation. Good stability against sintering under high-temperature treatment was achieved for a number of the Au catalysts through surface modification of the support material. The surface modification of supports can be a viable route to control both the composition and structure of support and nanoparticle interfaces, thereby tailoring the stability and activity of the supported catalyst systems.  相似文献

Methods for the controlled deposition of ultrathin metal oxide layers onto silver island films for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurements are reported. Two related deposition techniques are explored for thin film growth: a surface sol-gel method and atomic layer deposition. Both methods exhibit excellent control of the deposited film thickness to atomic level precision while conformally coating the complex structures found in silver island films. Coating of metal oxide films onto silver substrates provides a method for monitoring the distance dependence of SERS enhancements and offers a platform for exploring adsorption and interaction of analytes on dielectric surfaces. Analysis of the distance dependence of the Raman signal with increasing film thickness yields estimated silver particle sizes that are in agreement with microscopy, which is consistent with the layer-by-layer growth mechanism of uniform metal oxide films on the silver substrate. These methods can be easily extended to grow a variety of laminar or mixed metal oxide films for the exploration of interfacial phenomena.  相似文献
