The interpretation of way-finding symbols for healthcare facilities in a multicultural community was assessed in a cross-sectional study. One hundred participants recruited from Al Ain city in the United Arab Emirates were asked to interpret 28 healthcare symbols developed at Hablamos Juntos (such as vaccinations and laboratory) as well as 18 general-purpose symbols (such as elevators and restrooms). The mean age was 27.6 years (16–55 years) of whom 84 (84%) were females. Healthcare symbols were more difficult to comprehend than general-purpose signs. Symbols referring to abstract concepts were the most misinterpreted including oncology, diabetes education, outpatient clinic, interpretive services, pharmacy, internal medicine, registration, social services, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics and infectious diseases. Interpretation rates varied across cultural backgrounds and increased with higher education and younger age. Signage within healthcare facilities should be tested among older persons, those with limited literacy and across a wide range of cultures.  相似文献

The influence of the Marangoni effect on phase inversion behaviour is examined by integrating a microscopic study of the drop coalescence process, in which thin film drainage in the presence of insoluble surfactant occurs, into a macroscopic phase inversion model which has been developed previously using a Monte Carlo technique. This is achieved via an immobility factor, obtained from a comparison of the film drainage times for surfactant-laden systems and surfactant-free systems as a function of the drop approach velocity, surface Péclet number, initial surfactant concentration and the Hamaker constant, which is then used to modify the coalescence probability in the phase inversion model. On the one hand, the results indicate that the Marangoni effect removes any influence that the viscosity ratio has on phase inversion due to immobilisation of the interface, thus shielding the flow in the film from the effects of the flow in the dispersed phase; the point at which phase inversion occurs therefore tends towards equivolume holdups with the addition of surfactant. On the other hand, when comparisons are made with pure systems in which surfactant is absent, the system is seen to be either stabilised or de-stabilised from inversion depending on the viscosity ratio of the system. This is attributed to the influence of surfactant on the dispersion morphologies on either side of the inversion (i.e. water-in-oil dispersions and oil-in-water dispersions) and depends on the dispersed phase holdup; the Marangoni effect is felt stronger when the dispersed phase holdup is low.  相似文献

A shrinking undegraded core and a porous outer layer result, if the organic vehicle used for shaping ceramic or metal powder mouldings recedes in the interparticle space of the moulded body during pyrolysis. In the present work, a numerical model has been used which simulates the undegraded shrinking core situation and quantifies degradation of the organic vehicle and the diffusion of the resulting products in solution in the organic phase during pyrolysis of a ceramic moulding. This model is extended to include gaseous mass transport in the porous outer layer for a moulding in the shape of an infinite cylinder. The effect of resistance to gaseous mass transport in the porous outer region on defects originating in inner regions was estimated. It is shown that the greatest obstruction to mass transport is diffusion of degradation products in solution in the organic phase. However, the permeability coefficient for gas transport in the outer region begins to affect the critical heating rate required for avoidance of defects only when it is less than 10–15m2.Nomenclature C Concentration,C=C (r, t), based on the total volume of ceramic suspension - d Effective molecular diameter of alphamethylstyrene - D Diffusion coefficient,D=D (C, T) - e Porosity of powder - E Activation energy for thermal degradation - h Remaining weight fraction of polymer - Hvap Enthalphy of vaporization - i Node number - I Pre-exponential constant in Equation 13 - j Time step - K p Permeability coefficient - K 0 Specific rate constant - m Mass of monomer displaced - M Mass of one alphamethylstyrene molecule - P Monomer vapour pressure - P s Monomer vapour pressure at outer surface of the cylinder - P 1 0 Vapour pressure of monomer over its pure liquid - Q Rate of production of monomer, based on the total volume of ceramic suspension - r Radius of the cylinder - r j Distance from central axis to the inner surface of the porous layer at time stepj - r 0 Initial radius of the cylinder - R Universal gas constant - S 0 Specific surface area of powder per unit solid volume - t Time - T Absolute temperature - T c Temperature at maximum vapour pressure of monomer and atZ c - V Volume of monomer - V c Ceramic volume fraction - V p Polymer volume fraction - w Mass of monomer stored in the porous annulus - Z Heating rate - Z c Critical heating rate - 1 Volume fraction of monomer in the polymer-monomer solution - Viscosity of the monomer vapour - p Density of the polymer - Polymer-monomer interaction constant  相似文献

In this work, we present results of a study of gas absorption into a falling film on a vertical substrate. The film flow is accompanied by the formation of nonlinear waves which strongly influence the diffusion layer that develops from the film surface. As a result, significant enhancement of mass transfer has been observed in experiments. We use recent advances in modelling of the hydrodynamics and solve a two-dimensional convective-diffusion equation for the solute concentration. Numerical solutions for the finite-amplitude wave regimes and associated integral absorption rates are obtained for a range of flow conditions. Our results show clearly the influence of waves on the development of the diffusion layer and, in particular, the enhancement of absorption due to the waves; the existence of optimal conditions for maximizing the absorption rate is also demonstrated.  相似文献

We present results for gas absorption into a liquid film flowing over a spinning disc. The flow is accompanied by the formation of nonlinear waves which strongly influence the diffusion boundary-layer that develops beneath the surface of the film. We use recent advances in modelling of the hydrodynamics and solve a two-dimensional convective-diffusion equation for the solute concentration. Numerical solutions for the finite-amplitude wave regimes and associated integral absorption rates are obtained for flow conditions corresponding to real experiments. Our results show clearly the enhancement of absorption due to the waves.  相似文献

We study the deformation of oil droplets of varying viscosity adhering to a solid, rigid wall in a rectangular channel induced by a pressure-driven, laminar flow of water. Our experimental investigation involves the systematic study of the effects of initial droplet volume, flow rate and viscosity ratio on the various modes of droplet motion and deformation; this is performed via direct visualisation of the flow in a glass cell using a high-speed camera. Our results are used to construct flow maps that delineate the critical conditions for droplet ‘sliding’, ‘crawling’ and detachment from the channel wall as a function of system parameters. Comparisons of our experimental results with numerical predictions obtained using a procedure based on the diffuse-interface method yield reasonably good agreement for certain flow regimes.  相似文献

The effects of cathode catalyst layer (CCL) thickness on the detrimental effect of methanol cross-over in a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) under various operating conditions are studied. Three membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) with different CCL thicknesses but identical catalyst loading and identical anode catalyst layer are used. The results show that, when a thicker CCL, approximately twice the thickness of the base case, is used, the fuel cell performance increases significantly. The increase in performance with a thicker CCL is attributed to the oxidation of the methanol crossed-over in part of the catalyst layer and leaving the rest of the catalyst layer free from methanol contamination, leading to mitigations of the effects of mixed potentials. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) show that the charge transfer resistance for the fuel cell with twice the thickness of CCL is 30% lower compared to that for the base case, indicating that the active catalyst area available for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is indeed greater. The results of the electrochemical active surface areas (ECA) show that without methanol contamination, the ECA of the thicker CCL is actually lower, indicating that the better performance and the lower charge transfer resistance are not caused by a higher original ECA, but a higher active area for ORR. A much thicker CCL, about 5 times of that for the base case, is also used and the cell performance is also higher than that for the base case. The experimental results show that there exists an optimum cathode catalyst layer thickness and the thickness of cathode catalyst layer has a significant effect on DMFC performance.  相似文献

The in vitro minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) of roxithromycin and erythromycin against Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans were evaluated. Sixty-seven different A. actinomycetemcomitans isolated from periodontal pockets of 101 subjects with different forms of early-onset and adult periodontitis and three reference strains of A. actinomycetemcomitans (ATCC 29522, ATCC 29523, and NCTC 9710) were included in this study. Erythromycin showed poor in vitro activity against A. actinomycetemcomitans; roxithromycin, on the contrary, exhibited good in vitro activity. Moreover, roxithromycin showed the best in vitro antimicrobial activity against 17 serotype a and 12 serotype c subpopulations of A. actinomycetemcomitans; against 38 serotype b subpopulation of A. actinomycetemcomitans, roxithromycin was consistently active. Roxithromycin exhibited MBC values usually equal to, or one-fold higher than MIC values. All the MBC values of erythromycin were three- to four-fold higher than the respective MIC result. Since roxithromycin is characterized by high concentrations in serum and good penetration and diffusion into gingival tissue, it could be expected to pass into the gingival crevicular fluid at levels sufficiently high to inhibit A. actinomycetemcomitans in vivo. These data indicate that roxithromycin might be a potential candidate for therapeutic trials in patients with A. actinomycetemcomitans-associated periodontitis.  相似文献

We examine the effect of disc topography and time modulation of the liquid flow rate at the inlet on the dynamics of a thin film flowing over a spinning disc. We use a combination of boundary-layer theory and the Kármán-Polhausen approximation to derive coupled equations for the film thickness, and radial and azimuthal flow rates. Substrate patterning is taken into account in the limit of small-amplitude topography. Our numerical results indicate that the combined effects of flow rate modulation at the inlet and disc patterning can lead to a significant increase in interfacial waviness, which greatly exceeds that associated with the constant flow rate, smooth disc case.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to present the economic feasibility of biomass as a source of energy for corn drying. The market value of grain usually precludes it from being the most economical source of energy for grain drying, especially when compared to cobs and stover. If cobs and stover have little external value to the farm, and if they can be harvested economically, both can presently compete with LP gas as a source of energy for grain drying.  相似文献
