Therapeutic ultrasound angioplasty has been investigated, clinically, by a number of researchers and represents a potentially promising therapy for the treatment of atherosclerotic lesions. To date, there has been no detailed analysis of the effect of mechanical design parameters, such as wire geometry or damping characteristics, on wire waveguide performance. An apparatus capable of delivering therapeutic ultrasound down small diameter nickel–titanium (NiTi) wire waveguides is described. The output peak-to-peak (p–p) displacements at the distal tip of a 1.0 mm diameter waveguide were measured experimentally, by means of an optical microscope and image analysis software. The output was measured for a range of waveguide lengths from 118 to 303 mm. Wire waveguide distal tip displacements as high as 98 μm (p–p) at 23.5 kHz were measured. For the range of lengths tested, the experimental measurements show the critical relationship between the length of the waveguide and the output distal tip displacements. A finite element model that can predict the resonant frequencies and distal tip displacements of various wire waveguide geometries and configurations, including the effect of damping, is presented. This numerical model has been validated against the experimental displacement data obtained. This will be a valuable design tool for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of therapeutic ultrasound angioplasty procedures.  相似文献

This paper presents a new method for evaluating transmission loss, which is a key factor used in determining the impact of interference between terrestrial radio relay systems and Earth-satellite systems operating at the same frequency. The current model used by the CCIR was developed in the early 1970's when system packing density was low and large earth station antennas allowed the consideration of narrow beam approximations, resulting in a small common volume of intersection of the two beams. The recent increase in microwave communications traffic and improvements in technology have meant that smaller earth station antennas, including very small aperture terminals (VSATs), can be employed and hence the model requires revision. Residual stresses resulting from the shrinkage of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement have been implicated in the formation of cracks in cement mantles following total hip arthroplasty. This study investigates whether two such cements, with differentiated solidification characteristics (i.e. working and setting times), display significant differences in their residual stress characteristics in an experiment designed to replicate the physical conditions of total hip arthroplasty. Experiments were performed using a representative femoral construct to measure and compare the temperatures and residual strains developed for standard PMMA cement mantles (CMW 1 Gentamicin) and slow curing cement mantles (SmartSet HV Gentamicin) during and following polymerization. These experimental results revealed no statistically significant difference (t-test, p > 0.05) for peak exotherm temperature and residual strain levels between the cements (measured after 3 h). The tailored polymerization characteristics of the slow-curing cement do not significantly affect residual stress generation, compared with the standard cement. It is often considered that residual stresses significantly relax following polymerization and before biomechanical loads are first applied during rehabilitation (up to 3 days later). This was examined for durations of 18 h to 3 days. Axial strains in the model femur and stem reduced by averages of 5.5 and 7.9 per cent respectively, while hoop strains in the stem exhibited larger reductions. An axisymmetric transient thermoelastic finite element model of the experiment was developed, allowing residual stresses to be predicted based on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements of the heat released throughout the exothermic curing reaction. The model predictions closely replicated the experimental measurements of both temperature and residual strain at 3 h, suggesting that residual strains can be fully accounted for by the thermal contraction mechanism associated with cooling after solidification.  相似文献

In this paper we present a comparative evaluation of four popular interactive segmentation algorithms. The evaluation was carried out as a series of user-experiments, in which participants were tasked with extracting 100 objects from a common dataset: 25 with each algorithm, constrained within a time limit of 2 min for each object. To facilitate the experiments, a “scribble-driven” segmentation tool was developed to enable interactive image segmentation by simply marking areas of foreground and background with the mouse. As the participants refined and improved their respective segmentations, the corresponding updated segmentation mask was stored along with the elapsed time. We then collected and evaluated each recorded mask against a manually segmented ground truth, thus allowing us to gauge segmentation accuracy over time. Two benchmarks were used for the evaluation: the well-known Jaccard index for measuring object accuracy, and a new fuzzy metric, proposed in this paper, designed for measuring boundary accuracy. Analysis of the experimental results demonstrates the effectiveness of the suggested measures and provides valuable insights into the performance and characteristics of the evaluated algorithms.  相似文献

In the rat dorsal hippocampus and dorsal raphe nucleus, the microiontophoretic application of ergotamine and 5-HT suppressed the firing activity of CA3 pyramidal neurons and 5-HT neurons, an effect antagonized by selective 5-HT1A receptor antagonists. Co-application of ergotamine prevented the inhibitory action of 5-HT on the firing activity of CA3 pyramidal neurons but not of 5-HT neurons, indicating that ergotamine acted as a partial 5-HT1A receptor agonist in the dorsal hippocampus and as a full agonist at 5-HT1A autoreceptors. Ergotamine decreased, in a concentration-dependent manner, the electrically evoked release of [3H]5-HT in preloaded rat and guinea pig hypothalamus slices; this effect was prevented by the nonselective 5-HT receptor antagonist methiothepin but not by the selective 5-HT1B/1D receptor antagonist GR 127935 or the alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonist idazoxan. Although body temperature in humans remained unchanged following inhaled ergotamine, in the rat, subcutaneously injected ergotamine produced a hypothermia that was prevented by a pretreatment with the 5-HT1A/1B receptor/beta-adrenoceptor antagonist pindolol. Finally in humans, ergotamine did not alter prolactin or adrenocorticotropic hormone levels, but increased growth hormone level, which was prevented by pindolol. Cortisol level was increased in humans by ergotamine, but this enhancement was unaltered by pindolol. In conclusion, the present results suggest that ergotamine acted in the rat brain as a 5-HT1A receptor agonist and as an agonist of terminal 5-HT autoreceptor of a yet undefined subtype. In humans, ergotamine also displayed some 5-HT1A receptor activity but, probably because of lack of receptor selectivity, it did not present the same profile as other 5-HT1A receptor agonists.  相似文献

This paper presents results from a new theoretical model to estimate bistatic rain scatter interference between terrestrial radio relay systems and earth-satellite systems operating at the same frequency. The current model used by the CCIR was developed in the early 1970s when system packing density was low and the large earth-station antennas allowed the consideration of narrow beam approximations. This resulted in a small common volume of intersection of the two beams and large circular contours. The recent increase in microwave communications traffic and the improvements in technology have meant that very small aperture terminals (VSATs) can be employed, and hence the model must allow for the consideration of sidelobes, low gain antennas and non-uniform rain cells intersecting much larger common volumes. Aspects of the new model are discussed and different assumptions made by the CCIR model are examined. Results from the new model show that the contours are smaller and non-circular and result in much smaller co-ordination areas.  相似文献

A gas-liquid chromatographic method for the estimation of monomeric and dimeric catechin in beer is described. This method has been used to estimate the concentrations of these compounds in a number of beers, which were found to contain 0·5 to 8·0 ppm of monomeric catechin and up to 22·0 ppm of dimeric catechin. Beers bottled with a high level of air in the headspace can have a long shelf-life providing the level of dimeric polyphenols is low. The shelf-lives of beers which contain high concentrations of dimers are very sensitive to the levels of air in the headspace. At the levels found, monomeric catechin has no significant effect on haze whether or not headspace air is present.  相似文献

International open government initiatives are releasing an increasing volume of raw government datasets directly to citizens via the Web. The transparency resulting from these releases not only creates new application opportunities but also imposes new burdens inherent to large-scale distributed data integration, collaborative data manipulation and transparent data consumption. The Tetherless World Constellation (TWC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) has developed the Semantic Web-based TWC LOGD portal to support the deployment of linked open government data (LOGD). The portal is both an open source infrastructure supporting linked open government data production and consumption and a vibrant community portal that educates and serves the growing international open government community of developers, data curators and end users. This paper motivates and introduces the TWC LOGD Portal and highlights innovative aspects and lessons learned.  相似文献
