In a series of experiments, participants were required to keep track of 1 or 2 working memory (WM) objects, having to update their values in 80% of the trials. Updating cost, defined as the difference between update and non-update trials, was larger when 2 objects were involved compared with when there was only 1 object was involved. This finding was interpreted as evidence that the updating process encompasses both objects in WM, even though only 1 of them is actually updated. This feature of WM updating is limited to objects defined as "updateable," throughout the trial sequence. The results are explained by the need to reprogram the phonological loop when updating or the need for desynchronization followed by resynchronization of WM contents. Reaction time task rule congruency effects (RT-TRCEs) reflect faster responses to stimuli for which the competing task rules indicate the same correct response than to stimuli indicating conflicting responses. The authors tested the hypothesis that RT-TRCE reflects activated overlearned response category codes in long-term memory (such as up or left). The results support the hypothesis by showing that (a) RT-TRCE was absent for tasks for which there were no response codes ready beforehand, (b) RT-TRCE was present after these tasks were practiced, and (c) these practice effects were found only if the tasks permitted forming abstract response category codes. The increase in the RT-TRCE with response slowness, found only for familiar tasks, suggests that the abstract response category codes may be verbal or linguistic in these cases. Whereas explicit measures of the self-concept typically demonstrate a negative bias in depressed individuals, implicit measures such as the Implicit Association Test (IAT), revealed an opposite, positive bias. To address this inconsistent pattern, the authors examined, using a novel paradigm, mental set maintenance (i.e., the difficulty of maintaining active a required mental set) and set operation (the efficiency of executing the mental set while it is maintained). Dysphoric (N = 33) and nondysphoric (N = 30) participants alternated between an IAT focusing on self reference and a matched neutral task. Nondysphorics had greater difficulty in maintaining a negative self reference task compared to a neutral task. Conversely, dysphorics did not exhibit such difficulty, and they maintained a negative self-reference task more easily than nondysphorics. No group differences were evinced in smoothness of set operation. These results suggest that the shield protecting nondysphorics from maintaining negative mental sets is absent in dysphorics. In parallel processing models, residual activity constitutes noise that must be dumped, and fast dumping is associated with efficient processing. Subjects performed a continuous lexical decision task with repetitions (Experiments 1 and 2). Efficient readers (who had high comprehension and vocabulary scores) showed smaller repetition priming than did inefficient readers, but mostly at Lag 0 (equivalent to 3-sec stimulus onset asynchrony [SOA]). Experiment 3 manipulated the empty inter-repetition interval. It was found that reading ability was negatively related to repetition priming mostly when the SOA was 3 sec, but less so when it was 2 or 4 sec. Experiment 4 failed to find similar reading ability differences when the task was continuous recognition. The findings are interpreted as showing that efficient readers managed to dump residual activity related to subsemantic information in less than 3 sec, whereas inefficient readers required 3-4 sec. 相似文献

Inhibitory control is a cognitive mechanism that contributes to successful self-control (i.e., adherence to a long-term goal in the face of an interfering short-term goal). This research explored the effect of imagined positive emotional events on inhibition. The authors proposed that the influence of imagined emotions on inhibition depends on whether the considered emotion corresponds to the attainment of a long-term goal (i.e., pride) or a short-term goal (i.e., happiness). The authors predicted that in an antisaccade task that requires inhibition of a distractor, imagining a happiness-eliciting event is likely to harm inhibitory processes compared with imagining a pride-eliciting event, because the former but not the latter primes interfering short-term goals. The results showed that imagining a happiness-eliciting event decreased inhibition relative to imagining a pride-eliciting event. The results suggest a possible mechanism underlying the role of imagined positive emotions in pursuit of goals that require self-control. Well‐defined azobenzene‐containing side chain liquid crystalline diblock copolymers composed of poly[6‐[4‐(4‐methoxyphenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate] (PAzoMA) and poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) were synthesized by a two‐step reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT). The thermal liquid‐crystalline phase behavior of the PGMA‐b‐PAzoMA diblock copolymers in bulk were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized light microscopy (POM). The synthesized diblock copolymers exhibited a smectic and nematic liquid crystalline phase over a relatively wide temperature range. With increasing the weight fraction of the PAzoMA block, the phase transition temperatures, and corresponding enthalpy changes increased. Atomic force microscope (AFM) measurements confirmed the formation of the microphase separation in PGMA‐b‐PAzoMA diblock copolymer thin films and the microphase separation became more obvious after cross‐linking the PGMA block. The photochemical transition behavior of the PGMA‐b‐PAzoMA diblock copolymers in solution and in thin films were investigated by UV–vis spectrometry. It was found that the trans–cis isomerization of diblock copolymers was slower than that of the corresponding PAzoMA homopolymer and the photoisomerization rates decreased with increasing either the length of PAzoMA block or PGMA block. The photo‐induced isomerization in solid films was quite different with that in CHCl3 solution due to the aggregation of the azobenzene chromophore. The cross‐linking structures severely suppressed the photoisomerization of azobenzene chromophore.
