Client anticipations and preferences for confidentiality of records.

116 new clients requesting services during one semester at a medium-sized university counseling center participated in a survey of preferences and anticipations about confidentiality of their client records. The survey asked Ss to rate the amount of information that they preferred and anticipated would be released by the psychotherapist under 13 request scenarios. Generally, Ss preferred less information to be released than they anticipated would be, but differences existed by scenario and recipient. Homogeneous clusters of Ss were identified who expressed unique anticipations and preferences about confidentiality. Variation in supervision process across trainee experience levels.

Explored whether (a) practicing supervisors perceived themselves as varying their supervision process across 4 trainee experience levels and (b) whether several supervisor demographic variables were related to the degree to which some supervisors might vary the supervision process more than others. Four experience levels were identified: 1st practicum, 2nd practicum, advanced practicum, and predoctoral intern. 37 experienced supervisors rated the degree to which the supervision they gave varied across trainee levels. Results show that Ss significantly varied supervision between 2nd-practicum and advanced-practicum supervisees, but they did not vary the other levels. Also, psychodynamically oriented Ss in contrast to humanistic and other orientations (e.g., cognitive-behavioral) were most likely to make this discrimination across trainee levels. Use of transference in short-term dynamic psychotherapy.

Reviews progress in the theory and technique of work with transference in short-term dynamic psychotherapy (STDP). It has been suggested that while the roots of current work with transference in STDP go back as far as Freud's original development of the construct, evolution in technique has been in need of clarification. Major challenges (e.g., S. Ferenczi, 1921 [1950]) to Freud's views are described. Transference work in major current approaches to STDP (e.g., D. Malan, 1963, 1976) is highlighted. Recommendations for working with transference in STDP stress an active, interpersonal approach to transference manifestations that act as resistance to the therapeutic focus.
