A central question in perception is how stimuli are selected for access to awareness. This study investigated the impact of emotional meaning on detection of faces using the attention blink paradigm. Experiment 1 showed that fearful faces were detected more frequently than neutral faces, and Experiment 2 revealed preferential detection of fearful faces compared with happy faces. To rule out image artifacts as a cause for these results, Experiment 3 manipulated the emotional meaning of neutral faces through fear conditioning and showed a selective increase in detection of conditioned faces. These results extend previous reports of preferential detection of emotional words or schematic objects and suggest that fear conditioning can modulate detection of formerly neutral stimuli. Recent visual marking studies have shown that the carry-over of distractor inhibition can impair the ability of singletons to capture attention if the singleton and distractors share features. The current study extends this finding to first-order motion targets and distractors, clearly separated in time by a visual cue (the letter X). Target motion discrimination was significantly impaired, a result attributed to the carry-over of distractor inhibition. Increasing the difficulty of cue detection increased the motion target impairment, as distractor inhibition is thought to increase under demanding (high load) conditions in order to maximize selection efficiency. The apparent conflict with studies reporting reduced distractor inhibition under high load conditions was resolved by distinguishing between the effects of "cognitive" and "perceptual" load. According to theories of emotion and attention, we are predisposed to orient rapidly toward threat. However, previous examination of attentional cueing by threat showed no enhanced capture at brief durations, a finding that may be related to the sensitivity of the manual response measure used. Here we investigated the time course of orienting attention toward fearful faces in the exogenous cueing task. Cue duration (20 ms or 100 ms) and response mode (saccadic or manual) were manipulated. In the saccade mode, both enhanced attentional capture and impaired disengagement from fearful faces were evident and limited to 20 ms, suggesting that saccadic cueing effects emerge rapidly and are short lived. In the manual mode, fearful faces impacted only upon the disengagement component of attention at 100 ms, suggesting that manual cueing effects emerge over longer periods of time. Importantly, saccades could reveal threat biases at brief cue durations consistent with current theories of emotion and attention. Endothelin-1 (ET-1) was first found as a vasoconstrictor protein excreted by vascular endothelial cells, but recently ET-1 has been considered to have widespread functions that include regulation of osteochondrogenic metabolism. We analyzed sections of head regions in ET-1 knockout mice that are known to have abnormalities in pharyngeal arch-derived tissues and found that there was severe hypoplasia in facial bones. The hypoplasia suggests that the matrix mineralization system of facial bones is disrupted in ET-1-/- homozygous mice. To elucidate whether osteogenic cells in facial bones are the targets for ET-1 and whether expression of bone matrix genes are modulated by ET-1, we examined gene expression of ET-1 receptors, ETA and ETB, and that of the bone matrix proteins, osteonectin (ON) and osteopontin (OP), both in the head regions of ET-1+/- heterozygous and ET-1-/- homozygous mice by means of in situ hybridization. Different patterns of expression between ETA and ETB mRNAs were observed in both groups. In 18.5 days post coitus fetuses, ETA mRNA was most strongly expressed in osteogenic cells along craniofacial bones, but ETB mRNA was most strongly expressed in trunks of trigeminal nerve. This finding suggests that ET-1 may modulate osteogenic cells through ETA receptor but not through ETB receptor. The expression patterns of ETA, OP, and ON mRNAs were distinct between the two groups. In the lower jaw of ET-1+/- heterozygous mice, the ETA, ON, and OP mRNA positive cells were scattered in the inner and outer regions of the thick bone matrix, but in ET-1-/- homozygous mice, cells containing those mRNAs were located close to each other at the surface of thin bone matrix. However, cellular expression of ON and OP mRNAs in osteogenic cells of ET-1-/- homozygous mice was not suppressed as compared with ET-1+/- heterozygous mice. We conclude that ET-1 may regulate proliferation and migration of osteogenic cells in the maxillofacial region, rather than modulating the expression level of ON and OP mRNAs.  相似文献

Most studies into acquired theory of mind (ToM) deficits assessed patients once, long after the onset of brain injury. As a result, the time course of acquired ToM impairments is largely unknown. The present study examined whether ToM impairments following traumatic brain injury (TBI) recover, remain stable, or worsen over time. Because of the alleged association between ToM and social communication, ToM impairments may deteriorate because of changes in patients' social environment following injury. ToM ability and executive functioning were assessed shortly after injury and at 1-year follow-up. Compared with the orthopedic control group, the TBI group was impaired on ToM and executive functioning tasks at both assessments.
