Magnetic optical sensor particles with multifunctional cores and shells are synthesized via a facile nanoprecipitation method and the subsequent modification of the particle shell. The hydrophobic particle core includes optical oxygen indicators, a light harvesting system, photosensitizers, and magnetic nanoparticles. Further functionalities are introduced by modifying the shell with enzymes, antibodies, multiple layers of polyelectrolytes, stimuli‐responsive polymers, and luminescent indicator dyes. The hydrodynamic diameter is tunable by varying different precipitation parameters.  相似文献

While potentiometric sensors experienced a golden age in the 1970s that drove innovation and implementation in the clinical laboratory as sensors of choice, it has been only fairly recently that a theoretical understanding coupled with modern materials approaches transformed the area of membrane electrodes from a playful, yet empirical field to one firmly rooted in scientific understanding. This paper summarizes key progress in the field during the past two decades, emphasizing that the key impulses at the time originated from the emerging field of optical ion sensors. This simplified and transformed the underlying theory of their potentiometric membrane electrode counterparts, where subsequently substantial progress was made, including the realization of ultra-trace detection limits. The better understanding of zero-current ion fluxes and transport processes in turn allowed the development of approaches utilizing dynamic electrochemistry principles, thereby drastically expanding the field of membrane electrodes and making available a range of new methodologies that would have been difficult to predict only a few years ago. These significant developments are now starting to come back and influence the field of optical sensors, where the control and triggering of dynamic processes, away from simpler equilibrium principles, are becoming a highly promising field of research.  相似文献

The proximate determinants of fertility framework, developed in its current form by Bongaarts, has been used extensively by researchers for the past 20 years. Since the initial framework was developed, a wealth of new survey data on the proximate determinants has become available. This article reviews the new data and past experiences and suggests modifications to the framework that would take advantage of this experience. The major modifications suggested are (1) the use of sexual activity rather than marriage to indicate exposure to pregnancy; (2) a revision of the sterility index to measure infecundity from all causes; (3) a revised index of contraception that accounts for the fact that users of sterilization may become infecund before age 49; and (4) a revised definition and estimate of total fecundity.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To measure anterior chamber bacterial and fungal contamination at the beginning and end of cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in a large series of patients and to determine the influence of preoperative treatment and operative technique on contamination. SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, County Hospital of Salzburg, Austria. METHODS: This prospective study comprised 700 consecutive patients having planned cataract extraction (511 phacoemulsification, 189 extracapsular cataract extraction [ECCE]). Thirty-four patients required an anterior vitrectomy; 8 myopic patients did not receive an IOL. A preoperative smear and two intraoperative (at the beginning and end of surgery) anterior chamber aspirates were obtained from each patient. Postoperative smears were obtained at discharge. Three preoperative treatments were evaluated: no lacrimal system irrigation, no topical antibiotic (n = 282); lacrimal system irrigation with balanced saline solution, no topical antibiotic (n = 243); lacrimal system irrigation, antibiotic (neomycin) eyedrops (n = 175). All patients received topical indomethacin twice a day preoperatively. RESULTS: Preoperative conjunctival smears showed bacterial growth in 76.6% of eyes, with coagulase-negative staphylococci (75%) the most common bacteria. Anterior chamber aspirates were culture positive in 14.1% at the beginning and in 13.7% at the end of surgery, with coagulase-negative staphylococci and corynebacteria the most common. Contamination rates of conjunctival smears taken at discharge were significantly lower (35%) than those taken preoperatively. There was no statistically significantly higher risk of anterior chamber contamination in eyes having ECCE than in those having phacoemulsification. Preoperative treatment did not statistically significantly influence intraoperative aqueous humor contamination rates. There were no cases of acute postoperative endophthalmitis. CONCLUSION: Bacteria entered the anterior chamber during cataract extraction and remained there at the end of surgery in a significant percentage of patients. Surgical technique, preoperative antibiotics, and preoperative lacrimal system irrigation had no statistically significant effect on contamination.  相似文献

A series of sleep deprivation (SD) experiments were performed to examine the relative influence of circadian and homeostatic factors on the timing of sleep in squirrel monkeys free-running in constant illumination. All SDs started at the beginning of subjective night and lasted 0, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 1 1/4, or 1 1/2 circadian cycles. These six lengths represented three pairs: (0.1), (1/4, 1 1/4), (1/2, 1 1/2). Within each pair, SD ended at the same circadian phase but differed by one circadian cycle in duration. Both before and after SD, consolidated sleep (CS) episodes occurred predominantly during subjective night, even after long SDs ending at the beginning of subjective day. CS duration was strongly influenced by circadian phase but had no overall correlation with prior wake duration. Sleep loss incurred during SDs longer than 1/4 cycle was only partially recovered over the next two circadian cycles, though total sleep duration was closer to baseline levels after the second circadian cycle after SD. There was a trend toward a positive correlation between prior wake duration and the amount of NREM and delta activity measures during subjective day. Delta activity was not increased in the first 2 hours of CS after the SD. Relatively high levels of delta activity occurred immediately after the SD ended and again at the time of baseline CS onset. These data indicate that the amount of sleep and delta activity after SD in squirrel monkeys is weakly dependent on prior wake duration. Circadian factors appear to dominate homeostatic processes in determining the timing, duration and content of sleep in these diurnal primates.  相似文献

Examined the role of the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) in nonphobic entrainment. The wheel-running activity of SCN-ablated hamsters was recorded in constant dark (DD) and then under prolonged schedules of 2-hr daily cage changes, restricted food availability, and daily light–dark (LD) cycles. Ss with very large lesions subsuming the SCN and surrounding areas exhibited significant, albeit unstable, circadian activity rhythms in DD. Some Ss with similar ablations also showed entrained rhythms to daily cage change schedules. Ss showed robust rhythms entrained to a daily feeding schedule. No Ss showed entrainment to LD cycles. Competent circadian oscillators evidently exist outside the SCN, at least 0.5 mm or more away, and at least some are nonphotically entrainable. Weaker entrainment in animals with larger lesions suggests that nonphotically entrainable oscillators also exist within the SCN or its immediate vicinity. Rats anticipate a daily meal, provided that meal onset intervals are within a circadian (22-31 hr) range. Food-anticipatory activity (FAA) has been interpreted as evidence for a food-entrained circadian pacemaker or for a computational process that uses stored representations of pacemaker phase. The models make different predictions concerning the symmetry and history dependence of the circadian limits to FAA. To test those predictions, rats were entrained to 24-hr light-dark and feeding cycles and then exposed to feeding cycles of 21, 22, 25, 26, or 27 hr. The effect of morphine on circadial wheel-running rhythms of C57BL/6j mice was examined. Mice received morphine (25 mg kg-1, i.p.) or saline at eight different circadian phases in constant dark. Morphine injections in the middle of the inactive period induced significant advance phase shifts, whereas injections at other times induced small delay shifts or no responses. This phase-response relationship was not altered by optic enucleation. Morphine also induced hyperactivity. Restriction of activity prevented phase shifts. The results indicate that morphine shifts circadian rhythms by its effects on behaviour, rather than by a direct action on the circadian pacemaker. Morphine may represent a useful tool for further study of behaviourally induced phase-resetting in this species.  相似文献

A power amplifier for a loudspeaker and the earpiece of a telephone subset, integrated in the codec chip ARCOFI-SP (audio ringing codec filter featuring speakerphone function), are presented. The ARCOFI-SP is part of a subscriber telephone chip set. The analog section of the receive path comprises a low-noise programmable gain microphone amplifier with a maximum gain of 30-dB followed by a 16-b second-order sigma-delta analog-to-digital (A/D) converter. The analog section of the transmit path consists of two 16-b second-order sigma-delta D/A converters, one driving a pair of handset amplifiers for 200- Omega differential load and the other one a pair of loudspeaker amplifiers for 50- Omega differential load. The loudspeaker amplifier is described. A digital signal processor calculates the filter functions and handles frequency and tone generation. The amplifier has 1.2-mA quiescent current, 64-mA peak current, and >60 dB S/THD with 3.2-V output swing into a 25- Omega load.<>  相似文献
