A calorimeter of 25 bismuth germanate (BGO) crystals equipped with silicon photodiode readout has been tested at the CERN SPS in the energy range 1–50 GeV. The response for electrons has been shown to be linear in this energy range and the rms resolution obtained ( ) is approximately 1%, for E > 4 GeV. The electron/pion separation was found to be better than 1:500 in the energy range 1–20 GeV. Data on lateral and longitudinal shower development were compared with the results of a Monte Carlo simulation using the SLAC-EGS program and found to be in good agreement.  相似文献

Examined distributions of estimates of the dollar value of performance in studies employing the method of F. L. Schmidt et al (1979) for estimating the standard deviation of job performance (SDy) and found evidence that (1) the mean 50th percentile estimate is biased downward, (2) estimates of SDy appear to be a constant percentage of the 50th percentile estimate, and (3) estimates of SDy as a percentage of the 50th percentile value (SDp) are quite similar to empirical SDp values based on actual employee output. These findings suggest that the downward bias in the mean estimate of the 50th percentile causes the mean estimates of SDy to be similarly biased downward, but does not bias the estimates of SDp. Finally, an objective method for estimating the value of average employee output is described. The product of this value and the mean supervisory estimate of SDp yields an unbiased estimate of SDy. During the process of electrochemical machining the dependency of the inter-electrode gap with time and process parameters can be used to determine process characteristics and to define the shape of the workpiece surface relative to the tool surface. Defining process variables to map out the required gap-time function requires the use of time-consuming iterative trials. In-line monitoring of the gap would enable process control and tool to workpiece transfer characteristics to be achieved (for ideal conditions) without the requirement to generate such parameter maps. This work explores the use of ultrasound applied as a passive, non-intrusive, in-line gap measurement system for ECM. The accuracy of this technique was confirmed through correspondence between the generated gap-time and current time data and theoretical models applicable to ideal conditions. Gap measurements are also used to demonstrate and quantify the degree of departure from ideal behaviour for an In718/chloride system as the electrolyte flow rate is reduced from 16 to 4 l min−1. The monitoring of the gap size has also been shown to be effective when determining shape convergence under ideal conditions, for the example case of a 2D sinusoidal profile.  相似文献

Damage to cochlear efferents in chinchillas was assessed using transmission electron microscopy following unilateral treatment with the cholinotoxin ethylcholine mustard aziridinium ion (AF64A). AF64A was diluted in artificial perilymph to concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 100 microM. Survival times ranged from 1 to 12 weeks. At concentrations above 10 microM, widespread damage was noted to efferent fibers within the inner spiral bundle (ISB), tunnel spiral bundle (TSB), tunnel radial fibers (TRF) and efferent terminals at the base of OHCs. This damage included degeneration of fibers and terminals, delamination of mitochondria, vacuolization, and loss of cell membrane. However, at high concentrations, non-specific damage was also noted as thinnings or discontinuities of the membrane of OHCs and afferent fibers. At concentrations between 3 and 10 microM, selective damage was observed to efferent fibers within the ISB, TSB, TRF, and to terminals at the base of the OHCs, with all other structures appearing normal. At concentrations of 0.5 and 1 microM, damage was limited to efferent fibers within the TSB and ISB below the inner hair cells. In general, insult was greatest to middle- and basal-turn efferents, and longer survival times did not produce greater damage to, or loss of, efferents. These data suggest that at low concentrations, AF64A produces a partial yet selective degeneration of cochlear efferents within both the medial and lateral tracts, and that at the lowest concentrations used in these studies, AF64A produces a preferential insult on lateral olivocochlear efferents.  相似文献

The effects of cognitive categorization of raters on accuracy, leniency, and halo of performance evaluations were investigated in a field setting. One hundered seventy-four subordinates evaluated the performance of their managers on three performance dimensions. Managers were categorized as congruent or incongruent based on subordinates' perceptions of the extent to which the manager's behavior met the subordinates' expectations. The results indicated that the quality of ratings assigned by subordinates was related to the cognitive categories used. As hypothesized, ratings of managers who were categorized as congruent were found to be more accurate and also to contain more leniency and halo tendency than the ratings of managers who were categorized as incongruent. The problem of fitting a straight line to a finite collection of points in the plane is an important problem in statistical estimation. Robust estimators are widely used because of their lack of sensitivity to outlying data points. The least median-of-squares (LMS) regression line estimator is among the best known robust estimators. Given a set of n points in the plane, it is defined to be the line that minimizes the median squared residual or, more generally, the line that minimizes the residual of any given quantile q, where 0<q?1. This problem is equivalent to finding the strip defined by two parallel lines of minimum vertical separation that encloses at least half of the points.The best known exact algorithm for this problem runs in O(n2) time. We consider two types of approximations, a residual approximation, which approximates the vertical height of the strip to within a given error bound εr?0, and a quantile approximation, which approximates the fraction of points that lie within the strip to within a given error bound εq?0. We present two randomized approximation algorithms for the LMS line estimator. The first is a conceptually simple quantile approximation algorithm, which given fixed q and εq>0 runs in O(nlogn) time. The second is a practical algorithm, which can solve both types of approximation problems or be used as an exact algorithm. We prove that when used as a quantile approximation, this algorithm's expected running time is . We present empirical evidence that the latter algorithm is quite efficient for a wide variety of input distributions, even when used as an exact algorithm.  相似文献

The melting or plasticating behavior of seven commercial polymers (high density polyethylene, low density polyethylene, polypropylene, polyoxymethylene copolymer, polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), and polycarbonate (PC) was investigated using an experimental apparatus specifically designed to measure the melting rate and the viscous shear stress of a solid polymer on a steel surface under precisely controlled conditions of temperature, velocity, pressure and sample width comparable to actual processing. The melting rate (per unit polymer solid/metal contact area) was found to increase with increasing temperature for all polymers except PC, to decrease with increasing sample width and to increase less than proportionally to velocity. Pressure increased the melting rate somewhat for most of the polymers. The viscous shear stress decreased with increasing temperature for all polymers except PC, decreased with increasing sample width and increased with increasing velocity. Pressure generally increased the viscous shear stress. PC showed an unusual behavior with a maximum in the melting rate near 4200°F(215.5°C) and also a maximum in the viscous shear stress near 445°F (229.4°C). The present melting model could be examined unequivocally for the first time using our experimental results. Comparison of our experimental results with the predictions of the present melting model clearly indicates the inadequacy of the present melting model, Our experimental results will provide a basis for rational development of a reliable melting model.  相似文献

The efficacy of sucrose combined with CaCl2 during osmotic dehydration (OD) was tested for the control of Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum acutatum, and Penicillium expansum growth on lightly processed apple slices. The objective of this work was to determine whether the addition of CaCl2 in the osmotic solutions would limit the proliferation of fungal decay organisms. Slices were submitted to OD for 1 h at 25 degrees C in solutions containing 5 to 65% sucrose. Calcium chloride was added to a similar set of sucrose solutions at 0 to 8%. Control slices were made of untreated slices, and slices were processed in water. The mass ratio of the slices did not vary when fruit pieces were processed in solutions containing 5 to 65% sucrose. These slices showed a high susceptibility to spoilage compared to the control slices not submitted to OD: a significant twofold and 60% increase in decay area caused by B. cinerea and P. expansum, respectively, was observed when slices were processed in 50% sucrose/0% CaCl2; C. acutatum showed a significant 50% increase in decay area when slices were processed in 20% sucrose/0% CaCl2. Calcium uptake was significantly increased when slices were processed in CaCl2 solutions, and the highest Ca content was observed when processed in 8% CaCl2, reaching 40 times that of the control slices processed in water. Calcium-treated slices were less susceptible to spoilage by all three pathogens, and the most effective combination in reducing apple slice spoilage was 20 to 30% sucrose combined with 2% CaCl2.  相似文献

Accuracy of diagnoses rendered using a live video telepathology network was assessed for permanent sections of surgical pathology specimens. To determine accuracy, telepathology diagnoses were compared with those obtained by directly viewing the glass slide using a standard microscope. A total of 294 cases were read via both telepathology and glass slide by attending pathologists at a tertiary care medical center. Overall accuracy was defined as exact concordance between diagnoses. Clinically insignificant differences in diagnoses were excluded to determine clinically significant accuracy. For the 285 cases with complete data, the overall accuracy for telepathology was 0.912 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.872-0.941), whereas the overall accuracy for glass slide readings was 0.968 (95% CI, 0.939-0.985). This difference is statistically significant (p = 0.009). When focusing on clinically significant discrepancies, where the difference in diagnosis might affect therapeutic decisions, the video accuracy was only slightly less than the glass slide accuracy (0.965 [95% CI, 0.934-0.982] vs. 0.982 [95% CI, 0.957-0.994], respectively), but this difference is not statistically significant (p = 0.302). Most of the cases with clinically significant differences involved lesions with inherently high interobserver variation. Certainty of diagnosis did not differ between video and glass slide readings (p = 0.911), but there was an association between certainty of diagnosis and diagnostic accuracy for video (p = 0.003 for clinically significant accuracies). Based on these findings, we recommend when using this telepathology system that only preliminary diagnoses should be given in the following situations: for diagnostic areas with known high interobserver variability; when the consultant has any degree of uncertainty about the presence or absence of the lesion in question; and when there is insufficient experience using telepathology as a diagnostic medium.  相似文献
