A self-aligned gate III-V heterostructure FET process forultrahigh-speed digital and mixed analog/digital LSI/VLSI circuits

A planar ion-implanted self-aligned gate process for the fabrication of high-speed digital and mixed analog/digital LSI/VLSI integrated circuits is reported. A 4-b analog-to-digital converter, a 2500-gate 8×8 multiplier/accumulator, and a 4500-gate 16×16 complex multiplier have been demonstrated using enhancement-mode n⁺ -(Al,Ga)As/MODFETs, superlattice MODFETs, and doped channel heterostructure field-effect transistors (FETs) whose epitaxial layers were grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. With nominal 1-μm gate-length devices, direct-coupled FET logic ring oscillators with realistic circuit structures have propagation delays of 30 ps/stage at a power dissipation of 1.2 mW/stage. In LSI circuit operation, these gates have delays of 89 ps/gate at a power dissipation of 1.38 mW/gate when loaded with an average fan-out of 2.5 gates and about 1000 μm of high-density interconnects. High-performance voltage comparator circuits operated at sampling rates greater than 2.5 GHz at Nyquist analog input rates and with static hysteresis of less than 1 mV at room temperature. Fully functional 4-b analog-to-digital circuits operating at frequencies up to 2 GHz were obtained     

Immunization of Aotus monkeys with recombinant Plasmodium falciparum hybrid proteins does not reproducibly result in protection from malaria infection

Plasmodium falciparum antigens SERP, HRPII, MSAI, and 41-3 have shown promise as vaccine components. This study aimed at reproducing and extending previous results using three hybrid molecules. Antibody responses were reproduced in Aotus monkeys, but solid protection from a P. falciparum blood-stage challenge that showed an unintendedly enhanced pathogenicity was not observed.     

Sex therapy for the spinal cord injured client: Suggestions for professionals.

Reviews the literature that discusses the treatment of sexual problems experienced by spinal-cord-injured (SCI) persons. The effects of SCIs on sexual response and performance are described. Sex therapy interventions including support, education, behavioral and couple modifications, and intrapsychic changes are outlined. Transient transverse stimulated Brillouin scattering with abroad-band pump

The threshold for stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), which can damage optical components and be an energy loss mechanism in high-power pulsed laser systems, can be increased by using a broadband laser or by segmenting the aperture in order to limit the interaction length. A theoretical model of transient broadband SBS is developed. The authors start by considering the case of transient SBS with a monochromatic pump and find the effective interaction length for a pump pulse of a given duration. Using this interaction length, they derive expressions for the threshold intensity and for the window size required to avoid SBS with a pulse of given power and duration. They compute the steady-state gain and threshold intensity as a function of bandwidth for a multimode laser with large mode spacing     

Non-frequency-shifted phase conjugation by Brillouin-enhanced four-wave mixing

We present a theoretical treatment of four-wave mixing (FWM) in a Brillouin-active medium for the case in which the pump waves differ in frequency by approximately twice the Brillouin frequency shift of the medium and in which the probe-wave frequency is approximately the arithmetic mean of the frequencies of the two pump waves. Under these conditions, the conjugate wave produced by the FWM process has the desirable property of being at the same frequency as the probe. We derive the coupled amplitude equations describing this interaction. We solve these equations analytically in the limit of negligible pump depletion and find that large phase conjugate reflectivities are readily achievable. The coupled amplitude equations are solved numerically for the general case, and it is found that large power transfer from the pumps to the output wave is possible. The output wave is shown to be a nearly perfect phase conjugate of the probe wave, even far into the regime where pump depletion effects are important. Our formalism predicts the existence of a parametric instability in the propagation of the pump waves, but good performance is predicted before the onset of this instability.     

Precise timing of expression of a Plasmodium falciparum-derived transgene in Plasmodium berghei is a critical determinant of subsequent subcellular localization

The development of transfection technology for malaria parasites holds significant promise for a more detailed characterization of molecules targeted by vaccines or drugs. One asexual blood stage vaccine candidate, apical membrane antigen-1 (AMA-1) of merozoite rhoptries has been shown to be the target of inhibitory, protective antibodies in both in vitro and in vivo studies. We have investigated heterologous (trans-species) expression of the human malaria Plasmodium falciparum AMA-1 (PF83/AMA-1) in the rodent parasite Plasmodium berghei. Transfected P. berghei expressed correctly folded and processed PF83/AMA-1 under control of both pb66/ama-1 and dhfr-ts promoters. Timing of expression was highly promoter-dependent and was critical for subsequent subcellular localization. Under control of pb66/ama-1, PF83/AMA-1 expression and localization in P. berghei was limited to the rhoptries of mature schizonts, similar to that observed for PF83/AMA-1 in P. falciparum. In contrast the dhfr-ts promoter permitted PF83/AMA-1 expression throughout schizogony as well as in gametocytes and gametes. Localization was aberrant and included direct expression at the merozoite and gamete surface. Processing from the full-length 83-kDa protein to a 66-kDa protein was observed not only in schizonts but also in gametocytes, indicating that processing could be mediated outside of rhoptries by a common protease. Trans-species expressed PF83/AMA-1 was highly immunogenic in mice, resulting in a response against a functionally critical domain of the molecule.     

Effect of intensive training on lower leg structural strength: an in vivo study in ovariectomized rats

The Ilheus (ILH) virus has long been known to belong to group B of the arboviruses. Previous attempts to relate it to existing serogroups within the Flavivirus genus using conventional serological techniques such as hemagglutination inhibition, neutralization and complement fixation tests have been inconclusive. We have first used denaturing gel electrophoresis to estimate the molecular weight of immunoprecipitated radiolabeled viral proteins and the cross-reactivity among ILH proteins and hyperimmune sera to several flaviviruses only from the mosquito-borne encephalitis virus serogroups. The estimated molecular weight for the three proteins was in the same order of magnitude, as previously established, for mosquito-borne flaviviruses. Cross-immunoprecipitation tests showed that NS3 protein is the most cross-reactive. Partial nucleotide sequence analyses of the NS3 gene, corresponding to an area linking the helicase and the RNA triphosphatase domains, revealed that ILH virus is very closely related to the Japanese encephalitis virus complex confirming earlier serological data.     

Effect of laser mode structure on stimulated Brillouin scattering

The gain and reflectivity of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) process used as a Stokes-wave generator are shown theoretically to be independent of the mode structure of the pump laser provided that the pump-laser mode spacing exceeds the Brillouin linewidth and that the laser coherence length exceeds the characteristic gain length of the SBS process. Under the same set of conditions, the gain of an SBS amplifier is found to depend on the degree of correlation between the laser and Stokes fields. However, due to nonlinear coupling, these two fields become correlated within several characteristic gain lengths, and the subsequent propagation of the two fields is governed by the same set of equations that apply for the case of a single-mode pump laser. These theoretical predictions are tested experimentally for an SBS generator using acetone, carbon disulfide, and methanol as the Brillouin-active media, and the results are in full agreement with the theoretical predictions.
