Copper slag is a by‐product generated during smelting to extract copper metal from the ore. The copper slag obtained may exhibit pozzolanic activity and may therefore be used in the manufacture of addition‐containing cements. In this paper the effect of the incorporation of the copper slag in cement is measured. Blends of copper slag with Portland cement generally possess properties equivalent to Portland cement containing fly ash, but very different to the silica fume incorporation. Copper slag and fly ash reduce the heat of hydration more effectively than silica fume in mortars. The replacement of 30% cement by copper slag reduces the flexural and compressive strength in a similar way to fly ash; however, after 28 days, the reduction is less than the percentage of substitution. Hydrated calcium aluminate phases were analysed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The pozzolanic activity of copper slag is similar to that of fly ash and higher than silica fume. In the presence of low water/cement ratios, certain pozzolanic materials produce a very compact cement paste that limits the space available for hydration products, a determining factor in the formation of hydrated calcium aluminates. This paper presents the theoretical analysis of the use of single stage and double absorption heat transformers operating with the water–lithium bromide mixture coupled to a butane and pentane distillation column in a Mexican refinery. A mathematical model of the heat transformers was developed in FORTRAN and integrated as a user model to the Aspen Plus simulation code. Both components coupled to the column were modelled on steady-state conditions. The results show that it is theoretically possible to reduce the energy consumed in the reboiler between 26 and 43% by the use of single stage heat transformer at specific conditions, and between 28 and 33% with double absorption heat transformers for a wide range of operating conditions. Process capability indices (PCIs) are used in industry to assess percentages of nonconforming parts. An underlying assumption is that the output process measurements are distributed as normal random variables. When normal distributions are assumed, but different distributions are present - such as skew, heavy-tailed, and short-tailed distributions - the percentages of nonconforming parts are significantly different than the computed PCIs indicate. Data arising from nonnormal distributions can sometimes be transformed to conform to the normality assumption and the PCI's computed for the transformed data. In this paper, the effect of the transformation on the estimate of nonconforming parts is examined for three examples of nonnormal distributions - gamma, lognormal, and Weibull. The results of this experimental analysis suggest that data transformation can be useful for estimating an interval for Cpk values and the number of nonconforming parts.  相似文献

A total of 260 samples from six food groups (grains and grain products, tree nuts, dried fruits, fresh produce, fruit juice, and dairy products) were tested for levels of fungal contamination using the SimPlate Yeast and Mould Color Indicator (YM-CI) and the FDA official (BAM) method. Results showed that the SimPlate, in most cases, gave higher yeast and mould (YM) counts than the FDA (reference) method. Statistical analysis of the data (paired t-test) revealed that there were significant differences (α = 0.05) between the two methods for several foods tested. The SimPlate was easy to use, saved time during sample preparation and inoculation and gave results faster than the reference method. The evolution of the submarine and the development of radio communication are interrelated. From the earliest days, the effectiveness of a submarine as a war-fighting vessel was linked to its ability to receive orders via the then new medium of radio. This paper traces the earliest work that linked the two together - particularly from the viewpoint of the antenna as the ship's electronic "ears" - to the present, where work is being done to provide the "silent service" with the communications sensors needed to participate fully in the battle space of the future.  相似文献

A comparison of ZnO nanowires (NWs) and nanorods (NRs) grown using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) and hydrothermal synthesis, respectively, on p-Si (100), GaN/sapphire, and SiO2 substrates is reported. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images reveal that ZnO NWs grown using MOCVD had diameters varying from 20 nm to 150 nm and approximate lengths ranging from 0.7 μm to 2 μm. The NWs exhibited clean termination/tips in the absence of any secondary nucleation. The NRs grown using the hydrothermal method had diameters varying between 200 nm and 350 nm with approximate lengths between 0.7 μm and 1 μm. However, the NRs grown on p-Si overlapped with each other and showed secondary nucleation. x-Ray diffraction (XRD) of (0002)-oriented ZnO NWs grown on GaN using MOCVD demonstrated a full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 0.0498 (θ) compared with 0.052 (θ) for ZnO NRs grown on similar substrates using hydrothermal synthesis, showing better crystal quality. Similar crystal quality was observed for NWs grown on p-Si and SiO2 substrates. Photoluminescence (PL) of the NWs grown on p-Si and SiO2 showed a single absorption peak attributed to exciton–exciton recombination. ZnO NWs grown on GaN/sapphire had defects associated with oxygen interstitials and oxygen vacancies.  相似文献

The encapsulation of nitroxide radicals within ultrashort (ca. 50 nm) single‐walled carbon nanotubes (US‐tubes) is achieved. Tempo‐ and Iodo‐Tempo@US‐tubes are characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra display characteristic signals due to the detection of the spin probes within the US‐tubes. Longitudinal proton relaxivities (r1) of both nitroxide@US‐tubes samples are 7 to 13 times greater than the free nitroxide radicals in solution, giving relaxivities comparable to the clinical contrast agent (CA) Magnevist. In addition, transverse proton relaxivities (r2) show unprecedented proton relaxation enhancement in comparison to any other reported nitroxide radical‐based system or the clinically approved T2 CA, Resovist, under the same conditions. T2‐weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) phantom images show that the encapsulation of nitroxide radicals within the US‐tubes produces good contrast enhancement due to their high r2 relaxivities. The nitroxide radicals@US‐tube agents are a new promising class of spin probes for MRI and electronic paramagnetic resonance imaging (EPRI) labeling, tracking, and diagnosis.  相似文献

A new version of the scalar TE wave equation is introduced, one that is particularly useful in bent waveguide analysis. The slowly varying envelope equation in cylindrical coordinates for the field amplitude E is finite-differenced, with no other approximations made to it. It will be shown that this version of the equation has several advantages over other forms and gives good results for the power loss rates even at radii ⩽100 μm, as well as being useful for the study of curved structures with varying radii of curvature. Evidence is provided to show that the loss rates calculated from this equation using the two dimensional finite difference beam propagation method compare favorably with other numerical and analytical results found in the literature. Lifetime testing of a single cell direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) was carried out at 100 mA cm−2, ambient pressure and 60 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) were used to characterize the anode and cathode catalysts before and after lifetime testing. The XRD results showed that the particle sizes and lattice parameters of anode catalyst increased from 2.8 to 3.2 nm and from 3.8761 to 3.8871 Å; the cathode catalyst increased from 7.3 to 8.9 nm and from 3.9188 to 3.9204 Å before and after the lifetime test, respectively. The XPS results indicated that during the lifetime period, the extent of oxidation of the anode Pt and Ru components increased, and Ru appears in the XPS of the cathode. Polarization curves, power density curves, and in situ cyclic voltammetry were employed to test the performance of fuel cell and electrochemically active specific surface areas (SEAS) of the anode and cathode catalysts before and after the lifetime test. The overall findings are that the cathode suffers the greatest degradation over the test period and that subtle changes at the anode can have substantial adverse effects on the cathode.  相似文献

An orange juice based model system was set up wherein variables such as the addition of glucose, lysine, sorbitol and L -ascorbic acid and changes in pH and storage temperature were introduced to study their effects on L -ascorbic acid degradation and on browning. The addition of glucose, lysine and sorbitol did not have a significant effect on L -ascorbic acid degradation, whereas added L -ascorbic acid acted solely as a reserve material. In terms of browning, a change in pH and storage at elevated temperature produced a synergistic effect in the development of brown colour which was enhanced by the introduction of additives. Based on the results obtained, L -ascorbic acid appears to be the precursor in the non-enzymic browning occurring in this type of sample due to the formation of reactive carbonyl compounds produced upon its degradation which tend to polymerise, or to react with nitrogenous compounds, to give brown pigments.  相似文献
