The objective was to determine if exercise has a negative impact on the colour stability of beef and if dietary vitamin E (VE) supplementation could counteract any negative effect. Steers were not exercised or were walked 4.41km/day for 18 weeks. Within exercise treatment animals consumed, on average, either 450 or 1050IU/day of VE. Muscle α-tocopherol increased (P=0.004) from 2.35 to 3.15μg/g with VE supplementation. Following ageing M. longissimus dorsi (LD) and M. semimembranosus (SM) steaks were packaged under 80%O(2):20%CO(2) and stored at 4°C. The LD of exercised steers was more red and more saturated (both P<0.05) after 0 and 2 days of storage than LD of unexercised steers. While redness of both muscles decreased over the display period, LD retained a higher redness than SM from day 2 to 7 (P<0.05). Colour shelf-life of LD was extended by 0.75 days, to 3.25 days, due to VE supplementation.  相似文献

Anecdotal observations of reduced hypocalcemia due to small reductions in the precalving dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) are widely reported in Australia and New Zealand. Diets offered to nonlactating, periparturient dairy cows in pasture-based dairy systems in southeastern Australia can vary in their cation-anion difference from 0 to +76 mEq/100 g. The effects of such a range in the DCAD on the health and production of cows, on a pasture-based diet, were examined in an indoor feeding experiment. Four groups of four cows were offered pasture-hay and freshly cut pasture, a periparturient diet typical of that associated with the grazing system in Australia and New Zealand. Varying levels of salt supplementation were used to alter the dietary cation-anion difference, which ranged from -12 to +69 mEq/100 g. Blood and urine pH and mineral concentrations and urine hydroxyproline were measured. The addition of anions to the diet, to produce a negative DCAD, resulted in a nonrespiratory systemic acidosis. With decreasing DCAD, the pH of blood and urine and the strong ion difference of urine decreased curvilinearly, blood bicarbonate decreased linearly and the urinary ratio of Ca to creatinine increased curvilinearly. Although systemic pH was not reduced at a DCAD of +16 mEq/100 g, urine Ca-to-creatinine ratio had begun to rise, probably indicating increased calcium absorption. The absorption and renal excretion of Mg increased with decreasing DCAD. No differences were observed in urine hydroxyproline concentrations and no significant differences in milk production were measured.  相似文献

To examine the assertion that changes in nucleus accumbens (NAC) dopamine (DA) activity serve as a mechanism of lead (Pb)-induced disruption of fixed interval (FI) schedule-controlled behavior, the effects of intra-NAC administration of the irreversible DA antagonist EEDQ (N-ethoxycarbonyl-2-ethoxy-1,2-dihyroquinoline) and of dopamine itself on FI performance were compared in rats that had been chronically exposed to 0, 50 or 500 ppm Pb acetate in drinking water from weaning. Pb exposure per se (500 ppm), as in past studies, increased FI response rates, primarily by shortening interresponse times. Although DA, which produced rate-dependent effects, increased FI rates at low doses in the 0 and 50 ppm groups, it did so by decreasing postreinforcement pause times. All DA doses decreased rates in the 500 ppm group. In contrast, the DA antagonist EEDQ suppressed FI response rates, effects that were not strongly rate dependent, by increasing both postreinforcement pause values and mean interresponse times. Pb exposure (500 ppm) delayed the recovery of response rates to control levels at the highest EEDQ dose, raising the possibility of a delay in receptor production rate. Collectively, these data suggest that NAC DA activity may be an important modulator of FI response rates. Enhanced NAC DA activity may contribute to Pb-associated increases in FI rates and may underlie the differential response of control and 500 ppm Pb-treated groups to intra-NAC DA administration. The different processes by which DA and Pb increase FI rates, however, suggests that additional mechanisms are operative in the case of Pb.  相似文献

Percutaneous transfemoral arterial balloon occlusion or gelatin sponge embolization of the splenic artery or both were carried out in three high-risk patients with hepatic cirrhosis to reduce splenic hyperfunction and improve severe thrombocytopenia. Although this maneuver raised peripheral platelet counts in each patient, in one patient left upper quadrant pain with splinting of the lower chest cage led to hypostatic lower lobe pneumonia, while in another septic splentitis with gas-forming organisms necessitated splecectomy. Transfemoral occlusion of the splenic artery, although an effective, noninvasive approach to control splenic hyperfunction, has at the same time potential dangers that should be viewed with extreme caution in therapeutic application.  相似文献

In patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy (CM), abnormal renograms may result not only from circulatory failure (which should reverse after transplantation) but also from intrinsic renal disease (which contraindicates heart transplantation). Here, the outcome of heart transplantation was related to preoperative renograms, and the differentiating and prognostic value of renography was analyzed. METHODS: The study population consisted of 50 patients with ischemic CM expecting heart transplantation. Anatomical renal pathology was excluded in all patients. Dynamic renal scintigraphy was performed with 99mTc-mercaptoacetyltriglycine. Background-subtracted renograms were inspected visually and characterized numerically. Mean parenchymal transit time (mPTT), renal tracer content at 15 min (RTC15) and retention index (RI) were determined. The parametric renogram values were related to a normal reference group of 64 patients. The preoperative renograms were matched with the postoperative outcome. RESULTS: Three characteristic types of symmetrical findings in the kidneys were found: no pathological findings, mildly delayed peak and excretion phase and severely delayed peak and excretion phase. Pathological renograms were observed in 36 of 50 (72%) patients. The mean parametric renogram values in ischemic CM were as follows: Group A (normal kidney function), mPTT = 142+/-26.6 sec, RTC15 = 22.3%+/-4.6% and RI = 24.7+/-11.9; Group B (mild dysfunction), mPTT = 210+/-44.0 sec, RTC15 = 42.6%+/-10.3% and RI = 101.4+/-50.5; Group C (severe dysfunction), mPTT = 320+/-94.2 sec, RTC15 = 79.6%+/-15.9% and RI = 347.7+/-194.7; and reference patients (normal kidney function), mPTT = 137+/-31.1 sec, RTC15 = 22.8%+/-3.8% and RI = 24.6+/-7.9. Postoperative serum creatinine levels were <1.5 mg/dl in all Group A patients, between 1.5 and 2.5 mg/dl in 78% of Group B patients and >2.5 mg/dl in 75% of Group C patients. CONCLUSION: Renography revealed abnormal kidney function when structural pathology was excluded. The renographic abnormalities in ischemic CM did not reflect simply the circulatory failure. The numerical grading of renograms allowed patient stratification, suggestive of possible renal insufficiency after cardiac transplantation and immunosuppressive therapy. With further experience, renography may become a useful tool for predicting postoperative outcome in ischemic CM.  相似文献

This retrospective study examined the relationship of selected admissions variables and in-course performance to success in the Canadian Nurses Association Testing Service (CNATS) examinations of 114 students admitted directly from secondary school to a four-year integrated, problem-based learning (PBL) baccalaureate nursing program in Canada. Data were analyzed using two separate hierarchical stepwise regression equations. The first equation examined a set of secondary school grades (Ontario Academic Credits, or OACs) used to calculate university admission averages and their ability to predict CNATS performance. OAC English was found to be the best predictor, followed by OAC chemistry and the admission average obtained on other OAC subjects. The second regression equation looked at in-course grades as potential predictors of CNATS scores. The basic sciences variable proved to be the best predictor, followed by research methodology, first-year Nursing Concepts I, a problem-based nursing average, and a clinical practice average. Findings support the continued use of English and chemistry as admission criteria. The basic sciences courses and first-year nursing courses also emerged as statistically significant predictors of licensure examination success.  相似文献

This example of employee safety activity in the vinyl resin industry is illustrative of the efforts put forth by many to achieve acceptable VCM levels in work areas during all conditions of handling. In an effort to focus on tractable problems, computational natural language understanding systems have typically addressed language phenomena that are amenable to combinatorial approaches using static and stereotypical semantic representations. Although such approaches are adequate for much of language, they're not easily extended to capture humans' more creative language interpretation capacities. Since the early 1990s, there have been a number of small-scale computer programs that automatically constructed simple verbal jokes (puns), but none of these were fully developed systems that could be used for a practical application. We describe the building and testing of the STANDUP program – a large-scale, robust, interactive, user-friendly pun-generator (inspired by Binsted's JAPE program), which is aimed at allowing children, particularly those with communication disabilities, to develop their linguistic skills. The STANDUP system was designed in consultation with potential users and suitable experts, was rigorously engineered using public-domain linguistic data, and has a special purpose, child-friendly, graphical user interface. The software was tested successfully with real users (children with complex communication needs).  相似文献
