The function of the reproductive system in x-ray-irradiated male rats after the transplantation of a culture of testicular cells from newborn piglets

The effect exerted by transplantation of the 5 day culture of testicles from newly born piglets on the hypogonadal state of mature X-ray irradiated (3 Gy) rats was studied. It has been found that a month after transplantation (two months after irradiation) the hypogonadal state disappeared for a while, which is confirmed by normalization of the weight of seminal vesicles, content of testosterone and biologically active lutropine, restoration of the reproductive function of rats. No significant changes in steroidogenesis activity have been found, which proves a substituent character of transplantation. The effect disappears three months later but certain restoration of the content of nucleic acids in the testicles is observed.     

Isoproterenol evokes extracellular Ca2+ spikes due to secretory events in salivary gland cells

Secretory cells should in principle export substantial amounts of calcium via exocytosis since Ca2+ is sequestered in secretory granules. Based on a new technique for measurements of the extracellular calcium concentration in the vicinity of the cell membrane and on the droplet technique, we have monitored the rate of calcium extrusion from salivary gland acinar cells. Isoproterenol (ISP), a beta-adrenergic agonist and powerful secretogogue, evoked no change in the cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) but induced vigorous extracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) spiking. The absence of [Ca2+]i elevation and the pulsatile nature of the changes in [Ca2+]i indicate that these spikes are most likely due to calcium release from secretory granules. The cholinergic agonist acetylcholine (ACh), which induces moderate secretion, evoked a marked rise in [Ca2+]i and a smooth rise in [Ca2+]i, most likely induced by plasma membrane calcium pumps, on which shortlasting [Ca2+]i spikes were superimposed. The rate of ISP-induced calcium efflux was very substantial. The calculated calcium loss during the first 100 s of supramaximal stimulation corresponded to a reduction of the total cellular calcium concentration of approximately 0.4 mM. We conclude that in salivary glands, calcium release via exocytosis is one of the main mechanisms extruding calcium from cells to the extracellular milieu.     

Workshop on late effects of irradiation to the head and neck in infancy and childhood

A summary statement for the Workshop on Late Effects of Irradiation to the Head and Neck in Infancy and Childhood is presented. The Workshop, conducted by the National Cancer Institute with the cooperation of several other organizations, was convened to determine the present status of knowledge about thyroid disease related to irradiation of the head and neck and to develop guidelines with respect to detection, diagnosis, treatment, and followup. It was decided that surgical exploration should be considered for all palpable thyroid nodules, particularly those that are firm and clearly demarcated and appear as a "cold" area on the scan. Persons at risk because of prior irradiation to the head or neck should have regular reexaminations every one to two years.     

Hybrid organosiloxane coatings containing epoxide precursors for protecting mild steel against corrosion in a saline medium

Hybrid organic–inorganic materials made from sol–gel precursors can be used as anticorrosion barriers on metal substrates. The modification of epoxy resins with silicones is an interesting approach toward the synthesis of hybrid materials that combine the advantages offered by epoxy resins with those of silicones. In this study, novel hybrid epoxy‐silicon materials were synthesized using sol–gel chemistry and subsequently functionalized with 4,4′‐methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate), incorporating urethane functionality into the final polymer. The study screened five different epoxide precursors for use in the synthesis of the new hybrid materials and optimizing their anticorrosion properties. Spectral characterization confirms the proposed chemical structures of the newly synthesized polymers. The newly developed polymers were painted on mild steel panels, thermally cured, and their thermal, surface morphological, adhesion, and anticorrosion properties were fully characterized. The new coatings were found to have excellent thermal stability and adherence properties to steel surface. The results of corrosion testing on coated steel panels following long‐term immersion in a 3.5 wt % aqueous NaCl medium revealed that the polymer prepared using the epoxide precursor bisphenol A diglycidyl ether provided the best anticorrosion protection property among the synthesized polymers. This could be attributed to the excellent integrity and crosslink density properties in addition to the lack of microdefects in the surface of this coated sample as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy analyses. The newly prepared hybrid coatings reported in this study are very promising as an alternative to toxic chromate‐based coatings. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. A MOMENT MATCHING APPROACH FOR MODELLING ATM CELL ARRIVAL PROCESSES

This paper presents a moment matching approach for constructing an equivalent model of an ATM cell arrival process based on inter-cell arrival time measurement. As compared to a renowned parameter-matching technique proposed by Heffes and Lucatoni, the advantage of this approach is that the matching parameters are more easily obtained in real traffic situation. This approach has been tested on an MMBP^[Poisson] process, and results show that only the first four moments are required to capture the key characteristics in this process.     

Application of a Novel Method for Machine Performance Degradation Assessment Based on Gaussian Mixture Model and Logistic Regression

The currently prevalent machine performance degradation assessment techniques involve estimating a machine’s current condition based upon the recognition of indications of failure features,which entail complete data collected in different conditions.However,failure data are always hard to acquire,thus making those techniques hard to be applied.In this paper,a novel method which does not need failure history data is introduced.Wavelet packet decomposition(WPD) is used to extract features from raw signals,principal component analysis(PCA) is utilized to reduce feature dimensions,and Gaussian mixture model(GMM) is then applied to approximate the feature space distributions.Single-channel confidence value(SCV) is calculated by the overlap between GMM of the monitoring condition and that of the normal condition,which can indicate the performance of single-channel.Furthermore,multi-channel confidence value(MCV),which can be deemed as the overall performance index of multi-channel,is calculated via logistic regression(LR) and that the task of decision-level sensor fusion is also completed.Both SCV and MCV can serve as the basis on which proactive maintenance measures can be taken,thus preventing machine breakdown.The method has been adopted to assess the performance of the turbine of a centrifugal compressor in a factory of Petro-China,and the result shows that it can effectively complete this task.The proposed method has engineering significance for machine performance degradation assessment.     

Treatment of irritable colon with the food additive Appital

Appital is a herbal medicine. The aim was to examine its effect in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Other diseases were excluded by physical examination, rectoscopy, blood tests and in patients older than 35 years X-ray of the colon or colonoscopy. The study was designed as a double-blind placebo-controlled trial. The patients were randomized to either Appital or placebo. Following two weeks without medicine, the patient had Appital or placebo for eight weeks. Fifty-nine patients were randomized, 47 completed the study. The results were based on symptom scores registered by the patients. The symptom score was significantly reduced in patients treated with Appital (p = 0.002), but when compared to placebo, the difference was insignificant (p = 0.081). We concluded that Appital has no effect in relieving symptoms of IBS compared to placebo, although due to the possibility of type two error we cannot exclude a small, but hardly clinically relevant effect.     

Titanium and bioactive glass-ceramic coated titanium as materials for keratoprosthesis

The current problem with keratoprosthesis is the ingrowth of corneal or conjunctival epithelium into the anterior chamber. This may lead to infections and extrusion of the prosthesis as well as to the development of retroprosthetic membrane and secondary glaucoma. Glass-ceramic coated and uncoated titanium has been tested as material for the keratoprosthesis to prevent epithelial ingrowth. Twenty-two Supra-Descemet's membrane keratoprostheses were inserted in the eyes of 22 rabbits for 1, 2, 4, 8, or 12 months. The prosthesis had an optic part made of polymethylmetacrylate (PMMA). The support for the optic part and the flange of the prosthesis were made of titanium. Eleven of the prostheses were coated with glass-ceramic. The histological sections of the enucleated eyes were prepared through the central part of the cornea and the prosthesis using a cutting-grinding method. The histological analysis was made on both halves of the implants separately giving two analysis areas in each eye. All 11 titanium prostheses were retained for the time period planned. Two glass-ceramic coated prostheses were lost at 2 and 4 weeks, respectively. This was caused by difficulties at surgery due to a thick coating. These eyes were excluded from the histological analysis. No significant ingrowth of epithelium was seen in 15/18 (83%) and in 16/22 (73%) of the analysed areas of the glass-ceramic coated and titanium prostheses, respectively. Titanium appears to be a suitable material for the keratoprosthesis. The ingrowth of the epithelium may be hindered further by coating the titanium with bioactive glass-ceramic.
