Cardiovascular anomalies such as absent inferior vena cava and preduodenal portal vein are reported in cases of biliary atresia and make hepatic portoenterostomy a technical challenge. The authors present the case of a severe cardiac anomaly that significantly altered the functional outcome of a Kasai procedure. Baby M., an 8-week-old boy born with total anomalous pulmonary venous return (TAPVR), underwent hepatic portoenterostomy for biliary atresia. Over the next 3 months he remained icteric and febrile, and failed to gain weight. After multiple antibiotic treatments for suspected cholangitis, he underwent reexploration of the portoenterostomy, with no improvement in his overall condition. His prognosis was considered dismal because correction of the cardiac anomaly is associated with a high mortality rate (> 90%). The cardiac surgeon agreed to attempt a cure of the TAPVR, provided liver transplantation is contemplated if the patient survived. Within 48 hours postoperatively, his hepatic function had improved drastically. He became afebrile, had an improved appetite and weight gain, and was finally discharged 203 days after admission. One year later, he is thriving and remains anicteric. The exact reason for this drastic improvement is not well understood, but the right-sided cardiac failure caused by the TAPVR had a significant effect on the functional outcome of the portoenterostomy.  相似文献

In this letter, we show a direct relation between spectral embedding methods and kernel principal components analysis and how both are special cases of a more general learning problem: learning the principal eigenfunctions of an operator defined from a kernel and the unknown data-generating density. Whereas spectral embedding methods provided only coordinates for the training points, the analysis justifies a simple extension to out-of-sample examples (the Nystr?m formula) for multidimensional scaling (MDS), spectral clustering, Laplacian eigenmaps, locally linear embedding (LLE), and Isomap. The analysis provides, for all such spectral embedding methods, the definition of a loss function, whose empirical average is minimized by the traditional algorithms. The asymptotic expected value of that loss defines a generalization performance and clarifies what these algorithms are trying to learn. Experiments with LLE, Isomap, spectral clustering, and MDS show that this out-of-sample embedding formula generalizes well, with a level of error comparable to the effect of small perturbations of the training set on the embedding.  相似文献

In the requirements engineering community, consistency and completeness have been identified as important properties of system specifications. Custom algorithms to verify these properties automatically have been devised for a number of specification languages, including SCR, RSML, and Statecharts. In this paper, we provide means to automatically verify completeness and consistency of Abstract State Machine (ASM) specifications. The verification is performed using a widely available tool, a SAT solver. The use of a SAT solver removes the need for designing and fine tuning language specific verification algorithms. Furthermore, the use of a SAT solver automates the verification procedure and produces a counterexample automatically when a specification is incomplete or inconsistent. We provide an algorithm to translate ASM specifications to a SAT problem instance. The translation is illustrated using the TASM toolset in conjunction with the “production cell system” case study.  相似文献

The graphical technique presented in this paper allows the user to draw almost any type of bridge. Bridges are created as graphical variables and can be easily manipulated. Different kinds of bridges are classified and specified according to the characteristics of the road, the piers, the superstructure and the parapets. Several examples are presented. A first driving while impaired by alcohol (DWI) conviction is a key opportunity to identify offenders who are at high risk for recidivism. Detection of alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a major target of current DWI assessments. However, offenders frequently underreport their alcohol consumption, and use of biomarkers has been proposed as a more objective indicator. Among the best established are aspartate aminotranferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), mean corpuscular red blood cell volume (MCV), carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT), and thiamine. To our knowledge, no research has directly verified whether AUD biomarkers predict DWI recidivism status. Using a cross-sectional design, this study tested three hypotheses related to the utility of biomarkers in DWI assessment.

Hypotheses

(1) DWI recidivists possess biomarkers indicative of greater prevalence of AUD compared to first-time offenders; (2) multiple biomarkers better differentiate first-time offenders from recidivists compared to individual biomarkers; and (3) biomarkers add significantly to the prediction of recidivism over and above psychosocial questionnaires.

Methods

First-time offenders (n = 49) and recidivists (n = 95) participated in the study. In addition to self-reported information on sociodemographic and driving characteristics, data from several AUD questionnaires were gathered: Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test, Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, Composite International Diagnostic Interview, and Timeline Follow-Back. Blood samples were collected to measure AST, ALT, GGT, MCV, CDT, and thiamine.

Results

AUD biomarkers, taken individually or in combination, did not indicate that recidivists had more frequent AUD compared to first-time offenders. Also, they failed to significantly differentiate first-time offenders from recidivists or predict recidivism status. Finally, the superiority of biomarkers over psychosocial AUD questionnaires was not supported in the laboratory setting.

Conclusion

The present findings suggest that biomarkers of chronic patterns of heavy drinking may not be adequate to capture the multiple processes that appear to promote recidivism (e.g., binge drinking, other risky behavioural and personality features). Despite their objectivity, caution is warranted in the interpretation of a positive score on these biomarkers in DWI assessment. Longitudinal research is needed to more comprehensively explore the relationship between positive biomarkers in first-time offenders and their risk of becoming recidivists.  相似文献

Urban growth consists of horizontal and vertical expansions. An integrative framework for estimating horizontal and vertical expansions of city urban areas using Landsat images was presented. It includes following steps: (1) a spectrum-based classifier (here Support Vector Machine) is first used to preclassify Landsat images; (2) the spectral similarity-enhanced Markov chain random field cosimulation model is then applied to postclassify the preclassified images and detect building shadows; and (3) a morphological operator based on spatial logic reasoning is used to estimate mid-rise or taller buildings (MTBs) from detected shadows. Both horizontal urban growth and vertical urban growth in the main city area of Guangzhou for the time period of 1993–2013 were detected. The accuracy of identified MTBs by shadows was validated to be 78.1% on average for 2013. The case study indicates that Guangzhou had undergone both horizontal and vertical urban growth from 1993 to 2013, and vertical urban growth followed horizontal urban growth successively. The relationships between the horizontal and vertical urban growth and three major socioeconomic factors during the studied period were analysed. Results indicate that both the total area of built-up areas and the total area of detected MTBs are significantly correlated with population density, real gross domestic product, and fixed investment (i.e. investment in fixed assets such as land, buildings), respectively. While population density is the major driving force of horizontal urban expansion, fixed investment is the major driving force of vertical urban expansion for the city as a whole. Although the method is not perfect currently in detecting MTBs in various situations and the case study is mainly exploratory, the proposed framework and the case study can be helpful in quantitatively exploring the horizontal urban growth and vertical urban growth of a city and their causes.  相似文献

Improved activity and durability performance of a two-cell (86 cm2) proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE) stack is reported for the first time. Both membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) contain one order of magnitude lower platinum group metal (PGM) loadings compared to the state-of-the-art PEMWEs and incorporate novel Pt recombination layers. The high-performance and cost-effective MEAs are fabricated by the unique reactive spray deposition technology (RSDT). This advanced methodology allows for one-step fabrication of MEAs and ensures precise control and distribution of the catalyst composition and loading. The RSDT-fabricated MEAs contain only 0.2 and 0.3 mgPGM cm?2 loading in the cathode and anode electrodes, respectively, and demonstrate excellent activity and durability for over 3000 h of operation at industrially-relevant operating conditions without showing significant loss in performance. This novel work shows that a significant cost reduction for PEMWEs is achieved while maintaining excellent durability, high catalysts activities, and low hydrogen cross-over.  相似文献

This paper presents a distributed algorithmic solution, termed Coalition formation and deployment algorithm , to achieve network configurations where agents cluster into coincident groups that are distributed optimally over the environment. The motivation for this problem comes from spatial estimation tasks executed with unreliable sensors. We propose a probabilistic strategy that combines a repeated game governing the formation of coalitions with a spatial motion component governing their location. For a class of probabilistic coalition switching laws, we establish the convergence of the agents to coincident groups of a desired size in finite time and the asymptotic convergence of the overall network to the optimal deployment, both with probability 1. We also investigate the algorithm’s time and communication complexity. Specifically, we upper bound the expected completion time of executions that use the proportional-to-number-of-unmatched-agents coalition switching law under arbitrary and complete communication topologies. We also upper bound the number of messages required per timestep to execute our strategy. The proposed algorithm is robust to agent addition and subtraction. From a coalitional game perspective, the algorithm is novel in that the players’ information is limited to the neighboring clusters. From a motion coordination perspective, the algorithm is novel because it brings together the basic tasks of rendezvous (individual agents into clusters) and deployment (clusters in the environment). Simulations illustrate the correctness, robustness, and complexity results.  相似文献

Reviews the book, Handbook of implicit social cognition: Measurement, theory, and applications edited by Bertram Gawronski and Keith B. Payne (see record 2010-13147-000). The comprehensive overview of theoretical models, empirical findings, and practical applications of research in implicit social cognition provided within this book is timely and warranted. The editors were successful in clearly outlining that implicit social cognition theory and measurement. A primary strength of this volume is the way in which seemingly divergent areas of research have been organized into five distinct sections, each of which builds upon the previous sections to provide a comprehensive understanding of implicit social cognition. Even the novice researcher may benefit from the practical guides to implicit theory and measurement. This book would be especially interesting and useful for active researchers across a variety of domains who are interested in understanding how implicit processes can influence human behaviour. Cortisol is a stress hormone mediated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and a psychobiological marker of genetic risk for alcoholism and other high-risk behavioural characteristics. In previous work with driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) recidivists, we uncovered a significant inverse relationship between the frequency of past DUI convictions and salivary cortisol, whose strength surpassed those observed between DUI frequency and measures of alcohol abuse and other DUI-related characteristics. This finding emerged using a methodology not specifically contrived to test this relationship. The goals of this follow-up study were to (a) examine if a standardized stress-induction protocol would produce a significant inverse relationship between cortisol response and number of DUI offences; and (b) clarify whether HPA axis dysregulation could be linked to particular DUI-related behavioural correlates, such as alcohol use severity, sensation seeking, and antisocial features. Thirty male DUI recidivists were recruited as well as 11 male non-DUI drivers as a comparison group. Results indicated an inverse relationship between DUI frequency and cortisol response (r(39)=-0.36, p=0.021), as well as a lower cortisol response in DUI offenders than the comparison group (F(1,39)=5.71, p=0.022). Finally, for recidivists, hierarchical regression analyses indicated that experience seeking (R(2)=0.23, p=0.008), followed by number of cigarettes smoked daily ((Delta)R(2)=0.12, p=0.031), combined to explain 35% of the variance in cortisol (F(2,29)=7.26, p=0.003). These findings indicate that severe recidivism may have psychobiological underpinnings, and that HPA axis dysregulation appears to be a mechanism common to high-risk behaviours including DUI recidivism, sensation seeking, and cigarette smoking.  相似文献
