Metastatic renal cell carcinoma presenting as an aural polyp

Renal cell carcinoma may metastasize to the head and neck region at different stages of its evolution. We present a case of an undiagnosed renal cell carcinoma presenting as an ear polyp, and discuss the difficulties of the diagnosis and the management of these tumours.     

Effect of humidity and temperature on the adhesive strength of pressure sensitive adhesives

This paper reports the effect of humidity and temperature on the adhesive strength of a pressure sensitive adhesive (Flexbond 150) used to bond Mylar films. It has been found that, ill general, the adhesive strength decreases significantly with an increase in temperature. The effect of humidity on the bonding strength, however, was found to be process dependent. The sample preparation conditions, e.g., press weight for the bonding and the press time, are important in determining the humidity effect. The water sorption isotherm A 24°C for the adhesive was also determined. The amount of water sorbed by the adhesive at 95 percent relative pressure was found to be less than one weight percent.     

Half-bridge inverter using 4H-SiC gate turn-off thyristors

This paper reports on the first demonstration of a half-bridge power inverter constructed from silicon carbide gate turn-off thyristors (GTOs) operated in the conventional GTO mode. This circuit was characterized with input bus voltages of up to 600 VDC and 2 A (peak current density of 540 A/cm²) with resistive loads using a pulse-width modulated switching frequency of 2 kHz. We discuss the implications of the thyristor's electrical characteristics and the circuit topology on the overall operation of the half-bridge circuit. This work has determined the conservative critical rate of rise value of the off-state voltage to be 200 V/μs in these devices     

Multi-functional biochip for medical diagnostics and pathogen detection

We describe a multi-functional biochip (MFB), which uses two different types of bioreceptors, including nucleic acid and antibody probes, on a single platform. The multi-functional capability of the MFB device for biomedical diagnostics is illustrated by measurements of DNA probes specific to gene fragments of Bacillus anthracis and antibody probes targeted to Escherichia coli. Calibration curves for monitoring pathogenic species using antibody probes against E. coli and DNA probes for B. anthracis illustrate the capability of the device for medical diagnostics and for quantitative detection of pathogenic agents.     

Methods for the analysis of parallel streams of continuously recorded social behaviors.

Presents a strategy for analyzing social interactive behaviors occurring simultaneously in parallel streams. The standard strategy for representing such data has been interval coding. Interval coding converts the behavioral stream into a sequence of codes representing the behaviors observed in equal length intervals. This strategy is problematic because statistics calculated from interval coded data depend on the arbitrary choice of interval length. An alternative strategy is to represent the behavioral stream in a continuous-time format, using both the sequence of behaviors and their durations. A continuous-time model for social interactive data was applied to observations of mutual gaze between a husband and wife. The analysis uncovered different distributions of event durations in the two partners: The wife looked primarily at the husband and responded sensitively to his gaze behavior, whereas the husband looked primarily away, unresponsive to the wife. Ganglioside content of human platelets--differences in resting and activated platelets

Gangliosides may play functional roles in platelet physiology, therefore this study has been designed to evaluate whether changes in ganglioside composition may occur as a consequence of platelet activation. The results obtained indicate that lactosylceramide and GM3 are the major glycosphingolipids of human platelets. The lipid-bound sialic acid (LBSA) content was 1.27 +/- 0.04 micrograms/mg of protein. Resting platelets did not express GD3; GD3 was synthesized upon platelet activation (24 +/- 8 ng/mg of protein). The stimulation of platelets with adenosine diphosphate showed the appearance of GD3 even in the absence of degranulation. Finally, incorporation of pyrene-labeled GM3 into platelet membranes, followed by stimulation with adenosine diphosphate, resulted in the appearance of a fluorescent band comigrating with GD3. The present studies indicate that sialytransferase activation may occur as an early event following platelet stimulation, leading to GD3 synthesis mainly from the GM3 pool.     

Dependence on the motif YIPP for the physical association of Jak2 kinase with the intracellular carboxyl tail of the angiotensin II AT1 receptor

Angiotensin II is the effector molecule of the renin-angiotensin system. Virtually all of its biochemical actions are mediated through a single class of cell-surface receptors called AT1. These receptors contain the structural features of the seven-transmembrane, G-protein-coupled receptor superfamily. Angiotensin II, acting through the AT1 receptor, also stimulates the Jak/STAT pathway by inducing ligand-dependent Jak2 tyrosine phosphorylation and activation. Here, we show that a glutathione S-transferase fusion protein containing the carboxyl-terminal 54 amino acids of the rat AT1A receptor physically binds to Jak2 in an angiotensin II-dependent manner. Deletional analysis, using both in vitro protocols and cell transfection analysis, showed that this association is dependent on the AT1A receptor motif YIPP (amino acids 319-322). The wild-type AT1A receptor can induce Jak2 tyrosine phosphorylation. In contrast, an AT1A receptor lacking the YIPP motif is unable to induce ligand-dependent phosphorylation of Jak2. Competition experiments with synthetic peptides suggest that each of the YIPP amino acids, including tyrosine 319, is important in Jak2 binding to the AT1A receptor. The binding of the AT1A receptor to the intracellular tyrosine kinase Jak2 supports the concept that the seven-transmembrane superfamily of receptors can physically associate with enzymatically active intracellular proteins, creating a signaling complex mechanistically similar to that observed with growth factor and cytokine receptors.     

Conventional drug therapy in inflammatory bowel disease

The conventional treatment of inflammatory bowel disease should center around the liberal use of one of the many available forms of 5-ASA. Sulfasalazine should be used initially with the newer mesalamine-only containing drugs being reserved for sulfasalazine-intolerant patients or for those patients who require larger doses of medication. The choice of the delivery method should be made with the knowledge of the extent of disease and the potential coverage areas of the individual delivery methods. Systemic and topical glucocorticoids are an invaluable adjunct to 5-ASA therapy, but their use must be directed with the goal of remission induction. The tapering of glucocorticoids should be as prompt as the maintenance of remission allows, with a useful general guideline of decreasing the dose by 1 mg per day. Immunosuppressive therapy, including azathioprine and 6-mercaptopurine, holds promise for refractory cases of inflammatory bowel disease and for their potential steroid sparing properties; antibiotic therapy with metronidazole and ciprofloxacin in the absence of documented infectious disease offers additional routes to control disease. The majority of patients require a combination of drugs to attain remission. Only further study will reveal the ideal regimen for each of the different subsets of inflammatory bowel disease.
