The study investigates spatio-temporal patterns of birch regrowth in a mountain valley in which intensive livestock grazing was formerly practised. Vegetation changes were identified through analysis of three sets of aerial photographs. The results of GIS analyses, one-way ANOVA and PCA showed that regrowth patterns are complex. In the early phase of succession, grazing history has a strong impact on where new forest establishes, both at a distance from the seasonal farmsteads where grazing intensity prior to abandonment was highest, and close to previously existing forest. Sprouting is most likely to be the dominating regeneration strategy in this early phase. In a later phase of succession, the impact of grazing history on forest distribution patterns decreases, as exemplified by the increasing distance from existing forest. The largest amounts of birch forest then establish in warm locations with moderate moisture. Protection against wind appears to be important for birch establishment.  相似文献

Grinding processes can be optimized by simulating the influence of individual grains on process forces and surface topographies. However, the process results are significantly influenced by tool wear. Simulating this effect allows, e.g., the prediction of necessary tool changes when manufacturing large forming tools. Therefore, a new point-based approach for modeling arbitrarily shaped grains in different states of tool wear was developed. Based on a small amount of representative wear investigations, a flexible tool model was defined, which can be used for various tool shapes without further experiments. This model can be applied for grinding processes with varying engagement situations.  相似文献

The human Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (hSOD-1) gene, catalyses the dismutation of O2 to H2O2 and O2. It is located on chromosome 21 in q22.1 and is overexpressed in Down's syndrome (DS) patients. These patients present various abnormalities including mental retardation, congenital heart disease, immunological deficits and premature aging. In order to explore the potential role of SOD-1 overexpression in DS, we have generated two lineages of transgenic mice for the hSOD-1 gene and studied, at the ultrastructural level, the effect of hSOD-1 overexpression on the thymic microenvironment. Modification of the cellular architecture and morphology associated with a lipidic invasion, signs of a premature involution of the thymus, were observed in both lineages. A rupture of the filamentous network in the extracellular and probably also in the intracellular matrix was first observed. These results correlate the thymic alterations visualized in light microscopy, on the thymus from DS patients, and raise the question of the relationship between the SOD-1 overexpression and the different morphological alterations associated with the premature thymic involution observed in SOD-1 transgenic mice. They suggest that thymic and immunological impairments present in DS patients may be related to the SOD-1 gene dosage effect.  相似文献

For handling missing data, newer methods such as those based on multiple imputation are generally more accurate than older ones and entail weaker assumptions. Yet most do assume that data are missing at random (MAR). The issue of assessing whether the MAR assumption holds to begin with has been largely ignored. In fact, no way to directly test MAR is available. We propose an alternate assumption, MAR+, that can be tested. MAR+ always implies MAR, so inability to reject MAR+ bodes well for MAR. In contrast, MAR implies MAR+ not universally, but under certain conditions that are often plausible; thus, rejection of MAR+ can raise suspicions about MAR. Our approach is applicable mainly to studies that are not longitudinal. We present five illustrative medical examples, in most of which it turns out that MAR+ fails. There are limits to the ability of sophisticated statistical methods to correct for missing data. Efforts to try to prevent missing data in the first place should therefore receive more attention in medical studies than they have heretofore attracted. If MAR+ is found to fail for a study whose data have already been gathered, extra caution may need to be exercised in the interpretation of the results.  相似文献

During the last decade, nanomaterials (NM) were extensively tested for potential harmful effects towards humans and environmental organisms. However, a sound hazard assessment was so far hampered by uncertainties and a low comparability of test results. The reason for the low comparability is a high variation in the (1) type of NM tested with regard to raw material, size and shape and (2) procedures before and during the toxicity testing. This calls for tailored, nanomaterial-specific protocols. Here, a structured approach is proposed, intended to lead to test protocols not only tailored to specific types of nanomaterials, but also to respective test system for toxicity testing. There are existing standards on single procedures involving nanomaterials, however, not all relevant procedures are covered by standards. Hence, our approach offers a detailed way of weighting several plausible alternatives for e.g. sample preparation, in order to decide on the procedure most meaningful for a specific nanomaterial and toxicity test. A framework of several decision trees (DT) and flow charts to support testing of NM is proposed as a basis for further refinement and in-depth elaboration. DT and flow charts were drafted for (1) general procedure—physicochemical characterisation, (2) choice of test media, (3) decision on test scenario and application of NM to liquid media, (4) application of NM to the gas phase, (5) application of NM to soil and sediments, (6) dose metrics, (S1) definition of a nanomaterial, and (S2) dissolution. The applicability of the proposed approach was surveyed by using experimental data retrieved from studies on nanoscale CuO. This survey demonstrated the DT and flow charts to be a convenient tool to systematically decide upon test procedures and processes, and hence pose an important step towards harmonisation of NM testing.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine a mechanism through which interpersonal vulnerability factors may be linked with depressive symptoms by integrating a stress-generation model with an interpersonal theory of depression. The proposed conceptual framework was tested with 267 college students in a prospective structural equation model with 3 assessments over a 5-week period. Results supported all hypotheses. Initial depressive symptoms and initial reassurance seeking style were positively associated, and initial depressive symptoms were positively related to the occurrence of subsequent minor social stressors. Finally, a reassurance-seeking style was positively related to outcome depressive symptoms indirectly through minor social stressors. As predicted, stress generation operated as a mediating mechanism linking an initial reassurance-seeking style to subsequent depressive symptoms. A series of ideally mixed fluidized beds is used to obtain a narrow product size distribution in industrial-scale applications. Thereby, the fluidized bed compartments or stages are divided from each other by weirs with defined openings (slots) for particle exchange. The knowledge of particle exchange streams and residence times in different compartments, respectively, is crucial for the process design and optimization of such processes. This particle exchange behavior between different compartments in 3D-fluidized bed systems cannot be easily evaluated by experiments.Hence, a CFD multiphase model is used here and applied to a horizontal two-compartment batch fluidized bed apparatus to obtain particle exchange streams as a function of process parameters, e.g. slot height and bed mass. Good comparison of numerical and experimental results shows that this model can reasonably predict the particle exchange in two-compartment fluidized bed processes.On the basis of this work, the validated and predictive multiphase model can be applied to continuous horizontal multi-compartment fluidized beds as a future perspective to identify best-case process parameters, e.g. optimal slot height.  相似文献

In this work the microstructural characteristics and electrical insulating properties of thermally sprayed alumina coatings produced by suspension-HVOF (S-HVOF) and conventional HVOF spray processes are presented. The electrical resistance at different relative air humidity (RH) levels (from 6 to 97% RH) and values of dielectric strength were investigated by direct current electrical resistance measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and dielectric breakdown tests. Relationships between electrical properties and coating characteristics are discussed. At low humidity levels (up to 40% RH) the electrical resistivities of S-HVOF and HVOF coatings were on the same order of magnitude (1011???·m). At a very high humidity level (97% RH) the electrical resistivity values for the S-HVOF coatings were in the range 107-1011???·m, up to five orders of magnitude higher than those recorded for the HVOF coating (orders of magnitude of 106???·m). The better electrical resistance stability of the suspension-sprayed Al2O3 coatings can be explained by their specific microstructure and retention of a higher content of ??-Al2O3. The dielectric strength E d of suspension-sprayed coatings was found to be 19.5-26.8?kV·mm?1 for coating thicknesses ranging from 60 to 200???m. These values were slightly lower than those obtained for conventional HVOF coatings (up to 32?kV·mm?1). However, it seemed that the dielectric strength of conventionally sprayed coatings was more sensitive to the coating thickness (when compared with the values of E d determined for S-HVOF coatings) and varied to a greater extent (up to 10?kV·mm?1) when the coating thickness varied in the range 100-200???m.  相似文献
