Development of high-performance liquid chromatography criteria for determination of grades of commercial olive oils. Part I. The normal ranges for the triacylglycerols

Criteria for authentic olive oils were developed from isocratic high-performance liquid chromatography analyses of 99 olive oils from the major Mediterranean producers in the 1983–1986 crop years. Authentic olive oils include extra virgin, virgin and pure or refined oils, but exclude all reesterified and adulterated oils. The extra virgin through pure grades will have a combined area for the LOO (C_18:2C_18:1C_18:1), LOP (C_18:2C_18:1C_16:0), OOO (C_18:1C_18:1C_18:1), POO (C_16:0C_18:1C_18:1), POP (C_16:0C_18:1C_18:1), and SOO (C_18:0C_18:1C_18:1) peaks between 82.0 and 92.6% of the total area (L, linoleic; O, oleic; P, palmitic; S, stearic). Authentic oils will have ratios of LOO/LOP and OOO/POO that coincide with a line defined by OOO/POO=0.7844(LOO/LOP)+0.0968; correlation coefficient is 0.885. Authentic oils will not have a trilinolein (LLL) peak over 0.5% in area. Neither triolein (OOO) nor any other single peak suffices to characterize an olive oil sample as one of the authentic grades.     

A simple method to estimate the maximum nontrivial correlation of some sets of sequences

Code division multiple access and many other applications require large families of sequences with good correlation properties. In this paper we show that the moduli of certain character sums can be estimated in an easy way by using a method of Sidelnikov. G-proteins are involved in 5-HT receptor-mediated modulation of N- and P/Q- but not T-type Ca2+ channels

5-HT produces voltage-independent inhibition of the N-, P/Q-, and T-type Ca2+ currents in sensory neurons of Xenopus larvae by acting on 5-HT1A and 5-HT1D receptors. We have explored the underlying mechanisms further and found that the inhibition of high voltage-activated (HVA) currents by 5-HT is mediated by a pertussis toxin-sensitive G-protein that activates a diffusible second messenger. Although modulation of T-type currents is membrane-delimited, it was not affected by GDP-beta-S (2 mM), GTP-gamma-S (200 microM), 5'-guanylyl-imidodiphosphate tetralithium (200 microM), aluminum fluoride (AlF4-, 100 microM), or pertussis toxin, suggesting that a GTP-insensitive pathway was involved. To investigate the modulation of the T currents further, we synthesized peptides that were derived from conserved cytoplasmic regions of the rat 5-HT1A and 5-HT1D receptors. Although two peptides derived from the third cytoplasmic loop inhibited the HVA currents by activating G-proteins and occluded the modulation of HVA currents by 5-HT, two peptides from the second cytoplasmic loop and the C tail had no effect. None of the four receptor-derived peptides had any effect on the T-type currents. We conclude that 5-HT modulates T-type channels by a membrane-delimited pathway that does not involve G-proteins and is mediated by a functional domain of the receptor that is distinct from that which couples to G-proteins.     

Abstinence Self-Efficacy and Abstinence 1 Year After Substance Use Disorder Treatment.

To better understand the relationship between abstinence self-efficacy and treatment outcomes in substance use disorder patients, experts in the field need more information about the levels of abstinence self-efficacy most predictive of treatment outcomes. Participants (N = 2,967) from 15 residential substance use disorder treatment programs were assessed at treatment entry, discharge, and 1-year follow-up. A signal detection analysis compared the ability of different measures of self-efficacy to predict 1-year abstinence and identified the optimal cutoffs for significant predictors. The maximal level of abstinence self-efficacy (i.e., 100% confident) measured at discharge was the strongest predictor of 1-year abstinence. Treatment providers should focus on obtaining high levels of abstinence self-efficacy during treatment with the goal of achieving 100% confidence in abstinence. L. Benjamin's (1984) structural analysis of social behavior (SASB) system was used as the organizing framework within which to characterize the phenomenology of self and other relationship experience among subtypes of alcoholic men. Within the context of a community-based study of psychopathology, groups of antisocial alcoholic (AAL), nonantisocial alcoholic (NAAL), and nonalcoholic (control) men completed ratings of their introject (self-concept) and spousal experience. Group differences in demography and psychopathology provided strong support for subtype variations among alcoholic men that could not be attributed to global differences in adaptive functioning. SASB data showed consistency in circumplex ordering across the groups in ratings of self-experience and in ratings of the spousal relationship. AAL men were the most self-neglecting, blaming, and least trusting, and control men were the most relationally connected, with NAAL men falling in between. Despite the importance of the subtyping distinction, in some areas, alcoholism, regardless of subtype, was the core differentiating factor.
