The likelihood of violent behaviour: Predictions, postdictions, and hindsight bias.

Studied the effects of variations in base rate (BR) information and temporal context on predictions of violence and hindsight bias (HB). 270 undergraduates estimated the likelihood of violent offenders committing another violent offense based upon fictitious case history information. Ss were given 1 of 2 population BRs of the likelihood of reoffending (30% or 70%) and a recidivism estimation question that was phrased either predictively, predictively with a given outcome of either recidivism or no recidivism, or postdictively. Although different offenders were perceived as differentially likely to reoffend, estimated likelihood of recidivism was affected by neither BR nor temporal phrasing of the estimation task. A 2nd study of 182 undergraduates, using shorter case histories, also found no BR effect. HB effects were weak and inconsistent in both studies. A Multisite Comparison of Actuarial Risk Instruments for Sex Offenders.

Four actuarial instruments for the prediction of violent and sexual reoffending (the Violence Risk Appraisal Guide [VRAG], Sex Offender Risk Appraisal Guide [SORAG], Rapid Risk Assessment for Sex Offender Recidivism [RRASOR], and Static-99) were evaluated in 4 samples of sex offenders (N = 396). Although all 4 instruments predicted violent (including sexual) recidivism and recidivism known to be sexually motivated, areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) were consistently higher for the VRAG and the SORAG. The instruments performed better when there were fewer missing items and follow-up time was fixed, with an ROC area up to .84 for the VRAG, for example, under such favorable conditions. Predictive accuracy was higher for child molesters than for rapists, especially for the Static-99 and the RRASOR. Consistent with past research, survival analyses revealed that those offenders high in both psychopathy and sexual deviance were an especially high-risk group. Contributions of Canadian applied psychological research to correctional and psychiatric institutions.

Discusses Canadian psychological research relevant to the treatment of persons institutionalized in psychiatric and correctional settings. Studies are divided into 4 categories: prevention, assessment, treatment, and release. It is concluded that although some innovative and influential applied research has been accomplished, the amount of applied research is relatively small and tends to focus on assessment rather than treatment issues. A discussion of some of the factors responsible for the relative paucity of relevant research is followed by a consideration of what might be done to improve the quantity and quality of research efforts in the future. It is suggested that an area of high priority should be the identification of organizational features of institutions that affect the adoption and maintenance of improved practices. Identifying persistently antisocial offenders using the Hare Psychopathy Checklist and DSM antisocial personality disorder criteria.

Early starting, lifetime criminal persistence has been called sociopathy, antisocial personality disorder, and psychopathy. There is, however, disagreement about its core features and which measure is best for identifying such individuals. In the 1st of 2 studies of male offenders (n = 74), we found a large association between scores on the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R; R. D. Hare, 1991) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed. [DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) antisocial personality disorder criteria scored as a scale. The second study (n = 684) replicated this finding and found that, as previously shown for PCL-R scores, a discrete class (or taxon) also underlies scores on items reflecting antisocial personality disorder. The high association among these sets of items and their similarity in predicting violence suggested that the same natural class underlies each. Results indicated that life-course-persistent antisociality can be assessed well by measures of psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder. Authoritarianism and sexual aggression.

In Study 1, 198 men completed the Right Wing Authoritarianism, Sex Role Ideology, Hostility Towards Women, Acceptance of Interpersonal Violence, Adversarial Sexual Beliefs, and Rape Myth Acceptance scales, as well as measures of past sexually aggressive behavior and likelihood of future sexual aggression. As predicted, authoritarianism and sex role ideology were as closely related to self-reported past and potential future sexually aggressive behavior as were the specifically sexual and aggression-related predictors. Among 134 men in Study 2, authoritarianism and sex guilt positively correlated with each other and with self-reported past sexual aggression. Comments on Ferguson's "Forty years of useless research?" (Vol. 24, no. 2, April 1983).

The authors comment on Kinglsey Ferguson's "Forty Years of Useless Research?" (see record 2007-03833-001). Ferguson has raised an important issue for all readers to consider. He has taken a courageous stand and is attempting to stimulate us, as he does his undergraduate students, to explore nondefensively where we stand as a science and what we need to do to improve the quality of our work. Overcontrolled hostility among men found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Obtained MMPI overcontrolled hostility (OH) scores from 69 men held in a maximum security psychiatric institution after being found not guilty by reason of insanity, and from 60 men from a minimum security psychiatric hospital. An average of 39 mo after the original testing, OH scores were obtained from 55 of the maximum security patients. Results show that the maximum security patients had higher OH scores than those in minimum security and their OH scores increased over time. As the men who had been found not guilty by reason of insanity typically committed serious crimes against persons and were unlikely to have previous criminal histories, additional validity is provided for the OH dimension. It is noted that the increase in the maximum security patients' OH scores over time has important implications for prerelease psychological assessments of dangerousness. Combined liquid- and vapor-phase hydrocracking of heavy oil

A combined liquid and vapor-phase pilot plant designed to hydrocrack heavy residues, pitches and bitumen containing high concentrations of nitrogen, sulphur and inorganic solid contaminants is described. Results are presented of preliminary experiments using the vacuum bottoms from Weyburn crude oil as a feed.
