Ss studied faces in a full- or a divided-attention condition and then received a recognition test that included old faces, new faces constructed by combining facial features from previously studied faces ("conjunction faces"), and partly or completely new faces. Full- but not divided attention Ss responded "old" more often to old than to conjunction faces; all Ss responded "old" to these faces more often than to partially or completely new faces. Thus it is less attentionally demanding to encode facial features than it is to encode their interrelations. Dividing attention had identical effects on an incidental and an intentional learning group. We present a novel algorithm for detection of certain types of unusual events. The algorithm is based on multiple local monitors which collect low-level statistics. Each local monitor produces an alert if its current measurement is unusual, and these alerts are integrated to a final decision regarding the existence of an unusual event. Our algorithm satisfies a set of requirements that are critical for successful deployment of any large-scale surveillance system. In particular it requires a minimal setup (taking only a few minutes) and is fully automatic afterwards. Since it is not based on objects' tracks, it is robust and works well in crowded scenes where tracking-based algorithms are likely to fail. The algorithm is effective as soon as sufficient low-level observations representing the routine activity have been collected, which usually happens after a few minutes. Our algorithm runs in realtime. It was tested on a variety of real-life crowded scenes. A ground-truth was extracted for these scenes, with respect to which detection and false-alarm rates are reported.  相似文献

We investigated the effects of semantic priming on initial encoding of briefly presented pictures of objects and scenes. Pictures in 4 experiments were presented for varying durations and were followed immediately by a mask. In Exps 1 and 2, pictures of simple objects were either preceded or not preceded by the object's category name (e.g., dog). In Exp 1 we measured immediate object identification; in Exp 2 we measured delayed old/new recognition in which targets and distractors were from the same categories. In Exp 3 naturalistic scenes were either preceded or not preceded by the scene's category name (e.g., supermarket). We measured delayed recognition in which targets and distractors were described by the same category names. In Exps 1–3, performance was better for primed than for unprimed pictures. Exp 4 was similar to Exp 2 in that we measured delayed recognition for simple objects. As in Exps 1–3, a prime that preceded the object improved subsequent memory performance for the object. However, a prime that followed the object did not affect subsequent performance. Together, these results imply that priming leads to more efficient information acquisition. In contrast to most synthetic neural nets, biological neural networks have a strong component of genetic determination which acts before and during experiential learning. Three broad levels of phenomena are present: long-term evolution, involving crossover as well as point mutation; a developmental process mapping genetic information to a set of cells and their internal states of gene expression (genotype to phenotype); and the subsequent synaptogenesis. We describe a very simple mathematical idealization of these three levels which combines the crossover search method of genetic algorithms with the developmental models used in our previous work on genetic or recursively generated artificial neural nets [18] (and elaborated into a connectionist model of biological development [19]). Participants studied naturalistic pictures presented for varying brief durations and then received a recognition test on which they indicated whether each picture was old or new and rated their confidence. In 1 experiment they indicated whether each “old”/“new” response was based on memory for a specific feature in the picture or instead on the picture's general familiarity; in another experiment, we defined pictures that tended to elicit feature versus familiarity responses. Thus, feature/familiarity was a dependent variable in 1 experiment and an independent variable in the other. In both experiments feature-based responses were more accurate than those that were familiarity based, and confidence and accuracy increased with duration for both response types. However, when confidence was controlled for, mean accuracy was higher for familiarity-based than for feature-based responses. The theoretical implication is that confidence and accuracy arise from different underlying information. The applied implication is that confidence differences should not be taken as implying accuracy differences when the phenomenal basis of the memory reports differ. ABSTRACT:  Radio frequency identification (RFID) is an alternative technology with a potential to replace traditional universal product code (UPC) barcodes. RFID enables identification of an object from a distance without requiring a line of sight. RFID tags can also incorporate additional data such as details of product and manufacturer and can transmit measured environmental factors such as temperature and relative humidity. This article presents key concepts and terminology related to RFID technology and its applications in the food industry. Components and working principles of an RFID system are described. Numerous applications of RFID technology in the food industry (supply chain management, temperature monitoring of foods, and ensuring food safety) are discussed. Challenges in implementation of RFID technology are also discussed in terms of read range, read accuracy, nonuniform standards, cost, recycling issues, privacy, and security concerns.  相似文献

The 56.07-carat Tavernier pear-shaped gem diamond not only has an important historical provenance, but also shows a substantial color change between incandescent light and daylight. This famous diamond exhibits a very strong blue fluorescence when exposed to long-wavelength ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It appears light brown (an orange hue) under incandescent light, and light pink (a purple hue) under daylight. This change in color, or “alexandrite effect,” is caused by its very strong blue fluorescence resulting from the long-wavelength ultraviolet component present in daylight. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Participants viewed slides depicting ordinary routines (e.g., going grocery shopping) and later received a recognition test. In Experiment 1, there was higher recognition confidence to high-schema-relevant than to low-schema-relevant items. In Experiment 2, participants viewed slide sequences that sometimes contained a cause (e.g., woman taking orange from bottom of pile) but not an effect scene (oranges on floor), or an effect but not a cause scene. Participants mistook new cause scenes as old when they viewed the effect; false alarms to cause scenes and high-schema-relevant items increased with retention interval. Experiment 3 showed that the backward inference effect was accompanied by false explicit recollection, whereas false alarms to schema-high foils were based on familiarity. The species-dependent compartmentation of type I cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA I) and its dissociated regulatory subunit (RI) was examined in the heart by biochemical and immunohistochemical means. PKA I and RI were resolved from type II cAMP-dependent protein kinase and its regulatory subunit by DEAE-Sephacel chromatography of the supernatant and Triton X-100 soluble particulate fractions of heart homogenates. The relative amounts of holoenzymes and subunits were determined by cAMP-binding, protein kinase, 8-N3-[32P]cAMP photoaffinity labeling, and Western blot assays. Rat, rabbit, and guinea pig hearts all contained PKA I to varying degrees, but only in the supernatant fractions. Significant amounts of dissociated RI were found in the supernatant fractions, and to a lesser extent the particulate fractions, of these species. In contrast, though no PKA I was detected in the supernatant or particulate fractions of pig and beef heart, half of the cAMP-binding activity in the particulate fraction was attributed to RI. The results suggest that RI may associate with membrane fractions when it is not associated with the PKA catalytic subunit. Immunohistochemical studies of tissue sections from pig, beef, and rat cardiac ventricle using antibodies directed against RI also revealed species-dependent localization of RI. Cardiac myocyte intercalated discs were stained in pig and beef sections with additional sarcolemmal staining in beef sections. Rat ventricle, which contained large amounts of supernatant PKA I, showed nuclear staining. The localization of RI to cardiac myocyte intercalated discs and sarcolemma in certain species suggests a role(s) for this subunit in mediating cAMP-regulated events in these regions.  相似文献
