This special issue of Psychoanalytic Psychology celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sigmund Freud on May 6, 1856. The 15 papers and one book review in different ways address the question of Freud's continued relevance. The contributors to this special issue approach the topic in multiple ways. Some authors stay close to the question, while other authors write on topics dear to them. All are, nonetheless, distinguished contributors to contemporary psychoanalysis and most need no introduction to the readership of this journal. PLAs (programmable logic arrays) may be tested internally by self-test, or externally by applying test patterns. Fault coverage by nonexhaustive self-test is assured by computing a lower bound for estimated fault coverage vs. test pattern number. First, a lower bound for probabilistic detectability per fault is computed by a method based on Shannon's expansion theorem. In the process of finding a lower bound detectability for a particular fault, a test pattern for the fault is generated automatically, at no extra cost. These patterns often contain several don't cares. Traditional test pattern compaction is then applied to the test pattern set. In addition, a novel test pattern compaction method is introduced, suitable for embedded circuitry. The method may be used in conjunction with a serial scan architecture, whereby each test pattern is shifted one position before being applied to the circuit under test. The compaction scheme was applied to a benchmark set of 53 PLAs. An average reduction of 70% in the number of test bits and clock cycles was achieved.1 This work was done while B. Theodore Reik (1888-1969) is important and this appreciative symposium will tell why. His life and work are truly relevant to the history of the Division of Psychoanalysis. This appreciative symposium of seven papers by six distinguished authors pays tribute to Reik's special place in psychoanalytic history. The late historian of psychoanalysis writes of two interviews with Reik in 1965 and 1967 (see record 2006-20697-009). Dany Nobus, from London, who is at work on a biography of Reik, wonders what happened to Reikian psychoanalysis (see record 2006-20697-010). Martin Schulman, the former editor of The Psychoanalytic Review, reconsiders the question of lay analysis (see record 2006-20697-011). Zvi Lothane, a noted scholar, continues his interest in free association with an examination of Listening With The Third Ear (see record 2006-20697-012). Morton Israel, who has worked to reestablish Reik's reputation, writes about Reik's compulsion to confess (see record 2006-20697-013). Kyle Arnold, a graduate student, offers another view of The Compulsion to Confess (see record 2006-20697-014). Arnold's paper won the Stephen A. Mitchell Award for an outstanding paper by a psychology student. The final paper, by Kyle Arnold was also submitted independently of the symposium and is included (see record 2006-20697-015). It covers Reik's theory of listening. All of the contributors including myself, as a former student of Reik, have been touched in different ways by his genius. The authors address the problem of remedial-action computations for the purpose of alleviating overloads, abnormal voltages, etc. The method is based on a linear programming (LP) approach. Applications for voltage/reactive-power control, discrete capacitor/reactor switching, load transfer, and interchange control are considered. The method is optionally based on a DC or AC network model. It utilizes a number of innovations to yield an efficient computational procedure. The major innovations are: a procedure for determining coherent constraints which results in a fast identification of active constraints, fast linearization procedures for active constraints, procedures to define the region of validity of the linearized model, and a fast sparsity-coded LP algorithm. In this paper, the most frequently used power system maintenance strategies are reviewed. Distinction is made between strategies where maintenance consists of replacement by a new (or “good as new”) component and where it is represented by a less costly activity resulting in a limited improvement of the component's condition. Methods are also divided into categories where maintenance is performed at fixed intervals and where it is carried out as needed. A further distinction is made between heuristic methods and those based on mathematical models; the models themselves can be deterministic or probabilistic. From a review of present maintenance policies in electric utilities, it is concluded that maintenance at fixed intervals is the most frequently used approach, often augmented by additional corrections. Newer “as needed”-type methods, such as reliability-centered maintenance (RCM), are increasingly considered for application in North America, but methods based on mathematical models are hardly ever used or even considered. Yet only mathematical approaches where component deterioration and condition improvement by maintenance are quantitatively linked can determine the effect of maintenance on reliability. Although more complex, probabilistic models have advantages over deterministic ones: they are capable of describing actual processes more realistically, and also facilitate optimization for maximal reliability or minimal costs  相似文献

This paper is part of an ongoing activity of the IEEE Application of Probability Methods Subcommittee to advance the probabilistic methods used to analyze bulk power system (BPS) reliability. The objective of the Task Force is to develop a set of guidelines for measuring delivery point reliability. This involves reviewing published literature and other documentation of existing procedures, definitions, and indices. This report presents the results of the Task Force efforts to compile a useful set of terms and procedures for consistent reporting of BPS delivery point reliability  相似文献
