Responds to Gauthier (see record 2004-17185-003) who commented on the two articles by Koerner et al (see record 2004-17185-001) and by Roberge et al (see record 2004-17185-002. The purpose of this response is to discuss the issue of limited availability of mental health services for anxiety disorders in Canada. From a public health perspective, the authors emphasize the importance of gathering Canadian empirical data on the organization of mental health services for anxiety disorders. Specifically more research is needed on care requirements, and the financial and structural barriers that restrict access to mental health services at the regional, provincial and national levels. The authors also discuss the role of psychologists in improving mental health care in Canada. Cost-effectiveness studies conducted in interdisciplinary practice environments could demonstrate the value added by psychology in the organization of mental health care for anxiety disorders. Analysis of spontaneous electrochemical noise for corrosion studies

Spontaneous electrochemical noise can be a rich source of information concerning the processes simultaneously occurring at a corroding interface. But the combination of deterministic and stochastic events which make up noise signatures is often complicated by the specific nature of the systems being investigated. This paper describes a study of voltage noise fluctuations recorded during the free corrosion of commercial aluminium sheet material and compares typical results obtained with different noise analysis techniques.     

Optical wavelet matched filter

A shift-invariant optical continuous wavelet transform is used for pattern recognition. We propose an Voptical wavelet matched filter that performs optical wavelet transforms for edge enhancement and the correlation between two wavelet transforms in a single step. This new bandpass matched filter shows improved discrimination capability with respect to the conventional matched filter and improved signal-to-noise ratio with respect to the phase-only matched filter. The wavelet matched filter provides flexibility of an adaptive choice of the scale factors of the wavelets that permit the selection of size and orientation of the smoothing function used in edge enhancement and the optimization of the performance of the filter. Optical experimental results are shown.     

Programmable optical phase-mostly holograms with coupled-mode modulation liquid-crystal television

Commercial twisted nematic liquid-crystal television provides coupled phase and amplitude modulation. We propose a simple wedged shear plate interferometer for in situ measurement of its phase modulation and operating curve. For a given operating curve, the coupled-mode modulation holograms are designed with an iterative method. We adjust the operating curve by rotating the polarizer and analyzer to obtain the optimal operating curve. The phase-mostly holograms yield good-quality reconstructed images with the zero-order spot reduced to a minimum. Experimental results are shown.     

The development of a deep knowledge diagnostic expert system using fault tree analysis information

In this paper a diagnostic Knowledge Based Expert System (KBES) prototype for a nuclear Auxiliary Boiler Feed System (ABFS) was developed. A commercial Expert System shell accesses heuristic production rules to quickly resolve the majority of common faults. Supplementing this are a series of C functions which access the Fault Tree data base previously developed during the licensing process. These functions perform diagnostics, give detailed explanations of failure mechanisms, and identify system failure risks through examination of cut sets. The capture of both heuristic and Fault Tree information has resulted in a more exhaustive diagnostic tool with a domain of application unrestricted by the limitations of previous operator experience.     

Photobleaching of a solid photochromic medium by a Gaussian laser beam

Equations that describe the photobleaching of photochromic layers illuminated by Gaussian laser beams are given. The photochromic samples are made of thionine, triethanolamine, and polyvinyl alcohol and follow simple kinetics law. Spatial absorbance and time-dependent power transmittance are well described by the developed equations. The model is used to calculate the Gaussian dimension of helium-neon laser beams from kinetics data.     

Photochromic behavior of spiropyran in polymer matrices

The photoexcitation, relaxation, and optical erasure regimes of spiropyran- (SP-) doped polymer films were studied. Cellulose acetate, poly(vinyl acetate), and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were used as host polymer matrices. We studied the character of the photoreaction for both coloring and bleaching processes. Reversible holographic recording in SP-PMMA films and the origin of the photochemical fatigue was studied upon repeated UV-visible irradiation cycles.     

Treatment of uveitis with recombinant human interleukin-13

AIM: To evaluate the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-13 (IL-13) for the treatment of uveitis. METHODS: Uveitis was induced in monkeys by immunisation with human retinal S-antigen. Starting at the onset of disease, the animals were treated with IL-13 at 25 micrograms/kg, or vehicle control, injected subcutaneously once a day for 28 days. Intraocular inflammation was scored by indirect ophthalmoscopy for a period of 56 days. Circulating leucocyte levels were monitored. RESULTS: Uveitis started unilaterally in all but one animal. IL-13 inhibited inflammation both in the eyes in which the disease was present when the treatment was initiated (p = 0.0001), and in the contralateral initially negative eyes (p = 0.0001). After cessation of therapy, there was a progressive increase of inflammation in the IL-13 treated group. However, the beneficial effect of IL-13 extended into the 4 week follow up period. IL-13 produced an increase in circulating polymorphonuclear neutrophils and a decrease in lymphocytes. CONCLUSION: Administration of IL-13 appears to be a promising modality of treatment for severe uveitis.     

Corrosion of metallic materials

Corrosion processes are important in the degradation of electronic components. By nature of thin and closely-spaced metallic sections, electronic components are prone to corrosion failures even in the presence of traces of moisture and contaminants. Atmospheric corrosion, an electrochemical process under the influence of thin-film electrolytes, is primarily responsible for corrosion damage in electronics and can lead to premature failures even in indoor atmospheres. In attempting to minimize the risk of corrosion failures, it is important to account for corrosion damage during the design stage, manufacturing processes, storage, shipping, and in service use. Carefully-designed accelerated corrosion-tests are used to predict the performance of electronic components. Many sensitive analytical techniques and instrumentation are available for determining the mechanism and causes of electronic corrosion failures. Many sources of corrosion information are available for consultation on the performance of candidate materials, but, unfortunately, most are not tailored specifically to the electronics industry
