Massage therapy (MT) is an ancient form of treatment that is now gaining popularity as part of the complementary and alternative medical therapy movement. A meta-analysis was conducted of studies that used random assignment to test the effectiveness of MT. Mean effect sizes were calculated from 37 studies for 9 dependent variables. Single applications of MT reduced state anxiety, blood pressure, and heart rate but not negative mood, immediate assessment of pain, and cortisol level. Multiple applications reduced delayed assessment of pain. Reductions of trait anxiety and depression were MT's largest effects, with a course of treatment providing benefits similar in magnitude to those of psychotherapy. No moderators were statistically significant, though continued testing is needed. The limitations of a medical model of MT are discussed, and it is proposed that new MT theories and research use a psychotherapy perspective. Foodborne outbreaks are detected by recognition of similar illnesses among persons with a common exposure or by identification of case clusters through pathogen-specific surveillance. PulseNet USA has created a national framework for pathogen-specific surveillance, but no comparable effort has been made to improve surveillance of consumer complaints of suspected foodborne illness. The purpose of this study was to characterize the complaint surveillance system in Minnesota and to evaluate its use for detecting outbreaks. Minnesota Department of Health foodborne illness surveillance data from 2000 through 2006 were analyzed for this study. During this period, consumer complaint surveillance led to detection of 79% of confirmed foodborne outbreaks. Most norovirus infection outbreaks were detected through complaints. Complaint surveillance also directly led or contributed to detection of 25% of salmonellosis outbreaks. Eighty-one percent of complainants did not seek medical attention. The number of ill persons in a complainant's party was significantly associated with a complaint ultimately resulting in identification of a foodborne outbreak. Outbreak confirmation was related to a complainant's ability to identify a common exposure and was likely related to the process by which the Minnesota Department of Health chooses complaints to investigate. A significant difference (P < 0.001) was found in incubation periods between complaints that were outbreak associated (median, 27 h) and those that were not outbreak associated (median, 6 h). Complaint systems can be used to detect outbreaks caused by a variety of pathogens. Case detection for foodborne disease surveillance in Minnesota happens through a multitude of mechanisms. Boundary or mixed friction studies on a wide range of synthetic lubricants and mineral oils demonstrated that ethylene glycol gave higher static friction and much lower kinetic friction than did other lubricants tested. To investigate this unusual properly of ethylene glycol, poly-hydroxy alcohols of various molecular configurations were evaluated. The results indicate, that kinetic friction increases and static friction decreases as either the number of atoms between primary hydroxyl groups increases or primary hydroxyl groups are replaced with secondary hydroxyl groups. Surface coatings containing oxidation products of the glycols are believed to be responsible for the observed friction characteristics. 相似文献

Dynamic friction and static immersion tests in which oil temperature was varied and dynamic friction tests in which load was varied have been run on steel balls with oil blends containing seven commercial additives. Analyses of the ball surfaces by X-ray fluorescence have shown that significant surface coating formation is initiated at calculated surface temperatures of from 250 to 350 F for most of the additives studied. Although the surface coating “thickness” generally increased with temperature, the rate of increase was generally different for the static and dynamic tests. Both surface temperature and mechanical shearing appear to influence the reactions responsible for the surface coatings. Used oil analyses showed that base oil oxidation, additive decomposition, and, in some cases, sludge formation became detectible at temperatures corresponding to the start of significant surface coating formation. The results suggest that in situ polymerization may be an important phenomenon occurring on rubbing surfaces. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To study the relation between blood and saline administration, postresuscitation hematocrit (Hct) level, and metabolic recovery after hemorrhagic shock. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: It is generally believed that crystalloid can be substituted, in whole or in part, for blood during resuscitation of hemorrhagic shock. This is based on the belief that Hct can be safely reduced but should not fall below a critical level. METHODS: Male rats weighing 200 g were subjected to an isobaric hemorrhagic shock at a mean arterial pressure of 30 mmHg for 14 minutes, after which they were randomized to one of three resuscitation regimens. Control group (n = 36) were resuscitated by return of all shed blood. Mid-Hct (n = 39) and low-Hct (n = 60) groups were depleted of one third and one half of their circulating blood volumes, respectively, and were resuscitated with three times that volume of normal saline. Skeletal muscle intracellular energetics and pH were measured serially using 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy at baseline, during shock, and after resuscitation. Arterial blood was sampled at the same time points. The number of surviving animals in each group at 24 hours was recorded. RESULTS: After resuscitation, surviving rats in the low-Hct group demonstrated a greater consumption of high-energy phosphocreatine stores than did the other groups (control = 0.479 +/- 0.003, mid-Hct = 0.465 +/- 0.004, low-Hct = 0.457 +/- 0.007, mean +/- standard error of the mean; p < 0.01 low-Hct vs. other groups by analysis of variance). The rats that received saline resuscitation developed a relative intracellular acidosis (control = 7.29 +/- 0.02, mid-Hct = 7.25 +/- 0.02, low-Hct = 7.23 +/- 0.02; p < 0.05 controls vs. other groups by analysis of variance). At 24 hours, the death rates were significantly different among the groups: control = 1 of 36 rats (2.8%), mid-Hct = 6 of 39 (15.4%), and low-Hct = 14 of 60 (23.3%) (p < 0.05 by chi square analysis). CONCLUSION: The oxygen-carrying capacity of resuscitation fluid has an important impact on intracellular metabolism and outcome. 相似文献

We describe a method of selectively enriching for murine telomere-proximal sequences using affinity capture followed by PCR amplification. The telomeric fragments were selected from NotI-digested and lambda exonuclease-resected mouse genomic DNA by annealing to a biotinylated riboprobe containing multiple copies of the telomere repeat (TTAGGG)n. The resultant DNA-RNA hybrids were selectively retained on a matrix with covalently bound avidin. The captured DNA was then specifically released by ribonuclease action, and PCR amplification was performed using mouse repeat primers. The PCR products were cloned and used to screen a mouse genomic cosmid library, and the resultant cosmid clones were analyzed by fluorescence in situ hybridization. Ten of 70 clones analyzed gave telomere-proximal hybridization signals, indicating an at least 500-fold enrichment for telomere-proximal sequences. 相似文献

Multi-drug-resistant bacteria are becoming more prevalent, and treating these bacteria is becoming a global concern. One alternative approach to combat bacterial resistance is to use antimicrobial (AMPs) or host-defense peptides (HDPs) because they possess broad-spectrum activity, function in a variety of ways, and lead to minimal resistance. However, the therapeutic efficacy of HDPs is limited by a number of factors, including systemic toxicity, rapid degradation, and low bioavailability. One approach to circumvent these issues is to use lipidation, i.e., the attachment of one or more fatty acid chains to the amine groups of the N-terminus or a lysine residue of an HDP. In this review, we examined lipidated analogs of 66 different HDPs reported in the literature to determine: (i) whether there is a link between acyl chain length and antibacterial activity; (ii) whether the charge and (iii) the hydrophobicity of the HDP play a role; and (iv) whether acyl chain length and toxicity are related. Overall, the analysis suggests that lipidated HDPs with improved activity over the nonlipidated counterpart had acyl chain lengths of 8–12 carbons. Moreover, active lipidated peptides attached to short HDPs tended to have longer acyl chain lengths. Neither the charge of the parent HDP nor the percent hydrophobicity of the peptide had an apparent significant impact on the antibacterial activity. Finally, the relationship between acyl chain length and toxicity was difficult to determine due to the fact that toxicity is quantified in different ways. The impact of these trends, as well as combined strategies such as the incorporation of d- and non-natural amino acids or alternative approaches, will be discussed in light of how lipidation may play a role in the future development of antimicrobial peptide-based alternatives to current therapeutics. 相似文献

A meta-analysis examined the relationship between psychosocial factors and the development of breast cancer. Average effect sizes (Hedges's g) were calculated from 46 studies for 8 major construct categories: anxiety/depression, childhood family environment, conflict-avoidant personality, denial/repression coping, anger expression, extraversion-introversion, stressful life events, and separation/loss. Significant effect sizes were found for denial/repression coping (g?=?.38), separation/loss experiences (g?=?.29), and stressful life events (g?=?.25). Although conflict-avoidant personality style was also significant (g?=?.19), the effect size was less robust, and a moderate number of future studies with null results would reduce the significance. Results overall support only a modest association between specific psychosocial factors and breast cancer and are contrary to the conventional wisdom that personality and stress influence the development of breast cancer.
