Cylindrical stand-alone tubes of plasma-sprayed alumina were tested in uniaxial compression at room temperature, using strain gages to monitor axial strains. The effect of lamella size on the mechanical response was investigated by employing different starting powders to fabricate samples. The average powder sizes investigated included 9 m, 19 m and 32 m alumina; the resulting effective lamella diameters were 10 m, 28 m, and 55 m, respectively. Similar stress-strain hysteresis was observed on unloading in all tubes, independent of lamella size. A strong correlation between the failure stress and the cumulative strain at failure was also observed for tubes fabricated from the three powders. For samples with approximately constant densities, tubes plasma sprayed with the 9 m powder exhibited greater moduli than tubes sprayed from either 19 or 32 m powders. This difference was attributed to the greater percentage of unmelted -Al2O3 in the coating.  相似文献

Neuronal replacement occurs in the forebrain of juvenile and adult songbirds. To address the molecular processes that govern this replacement, we cloned the zebra finch insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) cDNA, a factor known to regulate neuronal development and survival in other systems, and examined its expression pattern by in situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry in juvenile and adult songbird brains. The highest levels of IGF-II mRNA expression occurred in three nuclei of the song system: in the high vocal center (HVC), in the medial magnocellular nucleus of the neostriatum (mMAN), which projects to HVC, and to a lesser extent in the robust nucleus of the archistriatum (RA), which receives projections from HVC. IGF-II mRNA expression was developmentally regulated in zebra finches. In canary HVC, monthly changes in IGF-II mRNA expression covaried with previously reported monthly differences in neuron incorporation. Combining retrograde tracers with in situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry, we determined that the HVC neurons that project to area X synthesize the IGF-II mRNA, whereas the adjacent RA-projecting neurons accumulate the IGF-II peptide. Our findings raise the possibility that within HVC IGF-II acts as a paracrine signal between nonreplaceable area X-projecting neurons and replaceable RA-projecting neurons, a mode of action that is compatible with the involvement of IGF-II with the replacement of neurons. Additional roles for IGF-II expression in songbird brain are likely, because expression also occurs in some brain areas outside the song system, among them the cerebellar Purkinje cells in which neurogenesis is not known to occur.  相似文献

This article presents a selective review of psychosocial research on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in adults and on a possible developmental precursor, recurrent abdominal pain (RAP), in children. For IBS the authors provide a summary of epidemiology, of the psychological and psychiatric disturbances frequently found among IBS patients, and of the possible role of early abuse in IBS. A review of the psychosocial treatments for IBS finds strong evidence to support the efficacy of hypnotherapy, cognitive therapy, and brief psychodynamic psychotherapy. The research relating RAP to IBS is briefly reviewed, as is the research on its psychological treatment. Cognitive-behavioral therapy that combines operant elements and stress management has the strongest support as a treatment for RAP. This study was performed to measure the thermal diffusivity of different types of nanocarbon composites. Thermoexfoliated graphite (TEG), ultrasonically dispersed TEG, and multiwalled carbon nanotubes were used as fillers in epoxy polymer matrixes. The nanocarbon filler content was 1–10 wt%. The temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity and the heat capacity were extensively characterized in the temperature range between 150 and 425 K. For this purpose, the thermal diffusivity of the composites was investigated by two experimental methods: dynamic λ‐calorimeter and photoacoustic. The comparative analysis of thermal diffusivity of compacted TEG samples with different densities and of nanocarbon‐epoxy with different filler content was carried out. It was found that for the composites with a low distribution of the nanocarbon filler, the thermal diffusivity increases and that the value is determined by the structural and morphological properties of the filler. The orientation function for the TEG‐epoxy composites and the compact TEG samples differs due to the epoxy matrix that reduced anisotropy of the composite. POLYM. The mechanisms of microhardness increase in thermoplastic polypropylene/multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) nanocomposites during electron irradiation (Ee = 1.8 MeV) with different absorption doses are investigated. The crystal structure of the nanocomposites, Raman scattering, and microhardness in a MWCNT concentration range between 0.1 and 5.0 wt% is studied in detail. During irradiation, changes in the degree of crystallinity of the polymer matrix, lattice parameters of the topologically ordered phase, Raman scattering, and microhardness show a complex conjugation process between the composite components. Their interaction is accomplished as the result of the formation of new bonds, which appeared with the radiation damages. Furthermore, the crosslinking of the internal MWCNT layers also contributes to an increase in the strength properties of the polymer nanocomposites. POLYM. The variable (V) regions of immunoglobulin heavy and light chains undergo high rates of somatic mutation during the immune response. Although point mutations accumulate throughout the V regions and their immediate flanking sequences, analysis of large numbers of mutations that have arisen in vivo reveal that the triplet AGC appears to be most susceptible to mutation. We have stably transfected B cell lines with gamma2a heavy chain constructs containing TAG nonsense codons in their V regions that are part of either a putative (T)AGC hot spot or a (T)AGA non-hot spot motif. Using an ELISA spot assay to detect revertants and fluctuation analysis to determine rates of mutation, the rate of reversion of the TAG nonsense codon has been determined for different motifs in different parts of the V region. In the NSO plasma cell line, the (T)AGC hot spot motif mutates at rates of approximately 6 x 10(-4)/bp per generation and approximately 3 x 10(-5)/bp per generation at residues 38 and 94 in the V region. At each of these locations, the (T)AGC hot spot motif is 20-30 times more likely to undergo mutation than the (T)AGA non-hot spot motif. Moreover, the AGA non-hot spot motif mutates at as high a rate as the hot spot motif when it is located adjacent to hot spot motifs, suggesting that more extended sequences influence susceptibility to mutation.  相似文献

The prediction of a realistic lifetime and the prolongation of the service life of a structure is an important task to reduce costs of civil engineering structures. The usual theoretical predictions are not very reliable. The prediction model used consists of a load model, a system‐transfer model and a damage model. The results of these sequentially coupled models are usually unreliable, especially the influence of the uncertain load and damage models controls the reliability of the result. A method based on monitoring strategies is presented, which avoids these problems. Expected trends of future traffic are considered. If the remaining life time of existing structures should be assessed, information about the strain time history of the past is needed. It is shown how these data can be generated taking into account the estimated statistics of the load in the past, the dynamic behaviour and the bumpiness of the road. Synthetic time series of the local strains are generated which include the real statistics of the process and cluster effects induced by truck convoys.  相似文献
