Argues that W. W. Ronan (1980) presents a one-sided picture of "work force control" by the "entrepreneur–capitalist–management group" and discredits the contributions of many psychologists to workers' well-being. Ronan's contentions that (1) psychological concepts are applied to programs that are motivated by management's desire to avoid unionization, (2) psychological experiments and interventions are unilaterally imposed on workers by management, and (3) economic benefits of psychological interventions should be shared equally with workers are discussed. It is concluded that psychologists have every reason to be proud of their colleagues' contributions to making companies more profitable while improving the work environment for employees. Zusammenfassung Nach Festlegung eines willkürlichen Strom- und Spannungsmaßstabes wird zuerst das Galvanometerrechteck gezeichnet und an dieses unter Winkeln, deren Tangens den ohmschen Widerständen der Brückenzweige entsprechen, Strahlen gezogen.Durch einfache Konstruktion wird das Umgrenzungsrechteck gefunden. Die Ströme und Spannungen sind in dem vollständigen Diagramm durch Strecken dargestellt. It has been shown that life-long, regular physical exercise has benefits for humans as well as laboratory animals. Population studies have shown that the longevity of humans is increased due to the decrease in all-cause mortality. Further, the functional capacities of organ systems, especially the cardiovascular, are maintained better. Body fat content stays lower. Similar conclusions have been drawn from animal studies, most of them using voluntary exercise in running wheels. We have previously shown that spontaneous activity, measured in an open field setting, is better preserved, suggesting a slowing of sensorimotor impairment with age, and possibly improved maintenance of dopaminergic and cholinergic systems. Further, the systemic effect on connective tissues was a slowing of the age-dependent increase of stability by changes in the cross-linking patterns. The purpose of the present investigation was to analyze whether late-onset training programs had any such effects, i.e., whether the aging effects seen in sedentary animals could be reversed to some extent. We trained male Sprague-Dawley rats from the age of 18 and 20 months until the age of 22 months, i.e., for 4 and 2 months, in a treadmill for 800 m/day. Spontaneous activity in an open field was assessed at the ages of 18, 20, and 22 months. For systemic changes in connective tissues, tail tendons were analyzed with respect to thermal stability and biomechanical strength parameters. The rats trained for 4 months lost weight significantly, which suggests that most of the fat accumulated during a sedentary life can be removed by physical exercise. Two months of training, either from the age of 18 or 20 months, had a positive effect on spontaneous activity, while the last 2 months of a 4-month training period had a negative influence. We conclude that the exercise program was too strenuous to be maintained for 4 months, which should be interpreted as a failure to increase the functional capacity sufficiently. Analysis of the thermal stability and biomechanical properties showed that both training programs moved these properties in a "younger" direction. We conclude that training starting late in life also influences the aging rat in a positive way, although there are limitations to the intensity of training that is beneficial.  相似文献

Condit Dam is one of the largest hydroelectric dams ever removed in the USA. Breached in a single explosive event in October 2011, hundreds‐of‐thousands of cubic metres of sediment washed down the White Salmon River onto spawning grounds of a threatened species, Columbia River tule fall Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha. We investigated over a 3‐year period (2010–2012) how dam breaching affected channel morphology, river hydraulics, sediment composition and tule fall Chinook salmon (hereafter ‘tule salmon’) spawning habitat in the lower 1.7 km of the White Salmon River (project area). As expected, dam breaching dramatically affected channel morphology and spawning habitat due to a large load of sediment released from Northwestern Lake. Forty‐two per cent of the project area that was previously covered in water was converted into islands or new shoreline, while a large pool near the mouth filled with sediments and a delta formed at the mouth. A two‐dimensional hydrodynamic model revealed that pool area decreased 68.7% in the project area, while glides and riffles increased 659% and 530%, respectively. A spatially explicit habitat model found the mean probability of spawning habitat increased 46.2% after dam breaching due to an increase in glides and riffles. Shifting channels and bank instability continue to negatively affect some spawning habitat as sediments continue to wash downstream from former Northwestern Lake, but 300 m of new spawning habitat (river kilometre 0.6 to 0.9) that formed immediately post‐breach has persisted into 2015. Less than 10% of tule salmon have spawned upstream of the former dam site to date, but the run sizes appear healthy and stable. Published 2015. Heavy metal toxicity is one of the most devastating abiotic stresses. Heavy metals cause serious damage to plant growth and productivity, which is a major problem for sustainable agriculture. It adversely affects plant molecular physiology and biochemistry by generating osmotic stress, ionic imbalance, oxidative stress, membrane disorganization, cellular toxicity, and metabolic homeostasis. To improve and stimulate plant tolerance to heavy metal stress, the application of biostimulants can be an effective approach without threatening the ecosystem. Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine), a biostimulator, plant growth regulator, and antioxidant, promotes plant tolerance to heavy metal stress by improving redox and nutrient homeostasis, osmotic balance, and primary and secondary metabolism. It is important to perceive the complete and detailed regulatory mechanisms of exogenous and endogenous melatonin-mediated heavy metal-toxicity mitigation in plants to identify potential research gaps that should be addressed in the future. This review provides a novel insight to understand the multifunctional role of melatonin in reducing heavy metal stress and the underlying molecular mechanisms.  相似文献

A maleimide nitroxide spin-label (MAL-6) linked to a cysteine in the hydrophobic core and a coproporphyrin I (CP) appended on the N-terminus of a synthetic helix-loop-helix peptide ([alpha2]) have been used to examine the designed self-association of a four-helix bundle ([alpha2]2), focusing on the bundle topology and stability and the rotational dynamics of the spin-label. Gel-permeation chromatography demonstrated that the [alpha2] peptide and the peptide modified with a spin-label ([MAL-6-alpha2]), a coproporphyrin ([CP-alpha2]) and a coproporphyrin plus a spin-label ([CP-MAL-6-alpha2]) self-associate into four helix bundles in solution as designed. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra prove that all these peptides are highly alpha-helical, confirmed for [alpha2]2 by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of the two attached maleimide spin-labels in [MAL-6-alpha2]2 shows their effective rotational correlation time (tau(c)) is 7.3 +/- 0.5 ns, consistent with that expected for the tumbling of the four helix bundle itself, indicating the labels are immobilized. The ESR spectra were also unaltered by aqueous-phase paramagnetic ions, Ni(II), demonstrating all of the spin-labels are buried within the hydrophobic core. The lack of spin-spin interaction between the buried, immobilized spin-labels indicates they are remote (> 15 A) from each other, indicating an antiparallel topology of the monomers in [MAL-6-alpha2]2. The parent [alpha2]2 and the modified [MAL-6-alpha2]2 and [CP-alpha2]2 peptides are highly stable (deltaG(H2O) approximately 25 kcal/mol) as investigated by guanidine hydrochloride denaturation curves monitored by ESR and CD spectroscopies. Guanidine hydrochloride denaturation leads to a shorter correlation time of the spin-label, tau(c) < 1 ns, approaching that of an unrestricted spin-label in solution. In contrast, trifluoroethanol caused dissociation of [MAL-6-alpha2]2 to yield two [MAL-6-alpha2] monomers with retention of secondary structure and changed the tau(c) to 2.5 +/- 0.5 ns, indicating that a significant degree of motional restriction is imposed on the spin-label by the secondary structure. The coproporphyrin probes covalently attached to the N-termini of [CP-alpha2]2 and [CP-MAL-6-alpha2]2 provided evidence that the helical monomers of both were in a parallel orientation, in contrast to the antiparallel orientation determined for [MAL-6-alpha2]2. Consequently, the ESR spectra of [MAL-6-alpha2]2 and [CP-MAL-6-alpha2]2 reveal major structural differences in the local vicinity of the spin-labels due to the topological difference between these two bundles. The ESR spectra of [CP-MAL-6-alpha2]2 contains two distinct nitroxide populations, indicating that one spin-label remains buried in the hydrophobic core and the other is excluded to solvent in this parallel topology. Alleviation of the steric interactions causing one spin-label in [CP-MAL-6-alpha2]2 to be solvent-exposed by addition of [CP-alpha2]2 results in formation of the heterodimeric [CP-alpha2]/[CP-MAL-6-alpha2], as evidenced by insertion of all the spin-labels into hydrophobic cores. The changes in global topology and local structure as evidenced by this pair of spectral probes have relatively minor effects on the course of guanidine denaturation of these bundles.  相似文献

Observation of interdiffusion and ordering in thin polycrystalline sandwich layers of copper and gold has been carried out by means of electron diffraction. Samples of total thickness 800 and 1000 Å with thickness ratios corresponding to AuCu3, AuCu and Au3Cu respectively were vacuum deposited onto cleavage surfaces of NaCl. The diffusion experiments were performed in a temperature range around 200 °C. A preferred formation of the disordered AuCu3 alloy was found during diffusion, in agreement with previous X-ray investigations. The ordering was much slower than the interdiffusion process, resulting in the coexistence of ordered and disordered crystallites even after equalized concentration. More complete ordering was obtained only after extended annealing. The interdiffusion coefficient D was evaluated from the diffraction patterns using a new method and was found to be 3 × 10-4 exp (25 000/RT).  相似文献
