Examined the achieving styles, coping strategies, gender roles, and feminist attitudes of 125 prominent, highly achieving Black and White women (mean age 53.5 yrs) in the US. Multivariate analyses of variance were used to examine race differences and similarities; canonical regression analyses (MANOVAs) were used to examine relationships among achieving styles and the other sets of variables. Both similarities and differences between Black and White women were found, and achieving styles were significantly related to the other variables. PURPOSE: Retrospective studies suggest that adult patients with intractable epilepsy may have a history of febrile seizures in childhood. Risk factors for a febrile seizure may include the rate of increase in the core temperature (T-core), its peak (Tmax), the duration of the temperature increase, or an underlying brain pathology. Recently, neuronal migration disorders (NMD) have been diagnosed with increasing frequency in patients with epilepsy, but the link between NMD, febrile seizures, and epilepsy is unclear. We studied rat pups rendered hyperthermic to ascertain the incidence of seizures, mortality, and extent of hippocampal cell loss in each group. METHODS: We exposed 14-day-old rat pups with experimentally induced NMD (n = 39) and age-matched controls (n = 30) to hyperthermia (core body temperature > 42 degrees C). RESULTS: The incidence of hyperthermia-induced behavioral seizures and mortality rate were significantly higher in rats with NMD than in controls (p < 0.05). The longer duration of hyperthermia resulted in a higher incidence of behavioral seizures and higher mortality rate (p < 0.05). In rats with NMD, hyperthermia resulted in hippocampal pyramidal cell loss independent of seizure activity; the extent of neuronal damage correlated positively with the duration of hyperthermia. In control rats, occasional neuronal loss and astrocytosis occurred only after prolonged hyperthermia. CONCLUSIONS: In immature rats, NMD lower the threshold to hyperthermia-induced behavioral seizures and hyperthermia in the presence of NMD may cause irreversible hippocampal neuronal damage.  相似文献

This unique and interesting book covers technical aspects of antenna noise temperature for large antennas, such as those of NASA's Deep Space system, encountered during the author's 40+ year career there. It is a true engineering book that gets right down to details and does not entertain tutorials, so is not a quick read. However, it is well referenced: most of the references are available via the Internet, from JPL's Web pages, and IEEExplore, if needed. The work described covers the frequencies from 2 to 32 GHz, with few excursions outside this range.  相似文献

The contribution of plastics to the total amount of waste produced is increasing significantly. Not only do plastics present disposal difficulties, but traditional disposal techniques constitute a waste of valuable resources. A process to recycle plastic waste economically would provide an attractive solution to both problems. Approximately 70 percent of the U.S. plastics production is comprised of only three families of plastics; polyethylene, PVC and polystyrene. Mixtures of these three polymers invariably have poor properties because of their thermodynamic incompatibility, so a recycle scheme will have to achieve separation into nearly pure components. A process is proposed which takes advantage of the thermodynamic incompatibility of polymers in solution to effect such a separation. The equilibration of a simulated waste mix containing 4 parts polyolefin (polyethylene and polypropylene), 1 part polystyrene and I part PVC was investigated in a variety of solvents at total polymer concentrations of up to 15 percent, in the temperature range 115 to 125°C, using differential refractometry. In an 85 percent xylene, 15 percent cyclohexanone solvent, the polyolefins (polypropylene and the various densities of polyethylene) coexisted in a single phase, but the three phases obtained—polyolefin, polystyrene and PVC—routinely contained 99 + percent pure polymer, indicating that excellent separations of the major thermoplastic components of a waste mix can indeed be obtained.  相似文献

To clarify the characteristic features of nosocomial pneumonia in a community hospital, we performed a clinical analysis of 147 patients (155 episodes) with nosocomial pneumonia. The following results were obtained. 1, Regarding the risk factors for nosocomial pneumonia, factors such as the patient whose age was over 65 years, a duration of admission of over one month, performance status 4 and underlying respiratory diseases associated with the appearance of nosocomial pneumonia. 2, The causative microorganism isolated from the sputum of the patient with nosocomial pneumonia was frequently a multi-drug resistant microorganism such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). 3, regarding treatment, although several antibiotics were administered for a long time, mechanical ventilation was used on 31% of the patients, and steroid pulse therapy was carried out on 24%. The clinical efficacy was poor with a 50% mortality rate. The reason why treatment of nosocomial pneumonia was difficult is thought to be been related to the general condition of these inpatients and to the appearance of a multi-drug resistant, polymicrobial microorganisms.  相似文献

f2 Phage, attenuated Polio I (LSC) strain introduced daily to a 350 l. experimental oxidation pond showed no decrease in bacterial viruses f2 or other coliphages or Polio I strain.Ratios of coliphages to human enteric viruses ranged in flood waters from concentrations as low as 1:1 to as high as 103:1; in wastewater at various seasons the ratio was 105:1; in trickling filter effluents in winter it was 104:1; in spring 105:1, in summer and fall 104:1, in oxidation pond effluents in winter 103:1; in spring 104:1; and in summer and fall 103:1. Out of three epidemics in small communities caused by failure of water supply, coliphages were found to be positive. At the same time only two samples of human enteric viruses were positive (the third was contaminated with yeasts).Chlorination experiments using the experimental oxidation pond showed that f2 was most resistant, MS2 was very resistant, and coliphages were more resistant than attenuated Polio I virus. Experiments with the oxidation pond effluents showed that coliphages were at least as or even more resistant to chlorine than human enteric viruses.  相似文献

Summary: Solution and gas phase processes of the polymerization of ethene are compared using new types of pentalenyl bridged ansa‐metallocenes such as [Me3Pen(Flu)]ZrCl2. As of the bridge, the catalyst system is remarkable thermostable up to 105 °C and a deactivation of the metallocene on the silica support can be suppressed. Compared to the non‐supported catalyst in a solution process, the application of the heterogenized system in a gas phase process leads to a decrease in activities while molar masses of the polyethenes are similar. Due to a higher degree of short chain branches of 20–30 per 1 000 carbon atoms instead of 10–17, the melting temperatures are 10 °C lower than those for polymers obtained in the solution process.
