Affective priming studies have shown that participants are faster to pronounce affectively polarized target words that are preceded by affectively congruent prime words than affectively polarized target words that are preceded by affectively incongruent prime words. We examined whether affective priming of naming responses depends on the valence proportion (i.e., the proportion of stimuli that are affectively polarized). In one group of participants, experimental trials were embedded in a context of filler trials that consisted of affectively polarized stimulus materials (i.e., high valence proportion condition). In a second group, the same set of experimental trials was embedded in a context of filler trials consisting of neutral stimuli (i.e., low valence proportion condition). Results showed that affective priming of naming responses was significantly stronger in the high valence proportion condition than in the low valence proportion condition. We conclude that (a) subtle aspects of the procedure can influence affective priming of naming responses, (b) finding affective priming of naming responses does not allow for the conclusion that affective stimulus processing is unconditional, and (c) affective stimulus processing depends on selective attention for affective stimulus information. Affective priming studies have demonstrated that subliminally presented prime words can exert an influence on responses towards positive or negative target stimuli. In the present series of experiments, it was investigated whether these findings can be extended to pictorial stimuli. Ideographically selected positive, neutral, and negative picture primes that were sandwich-masked immediately preceded positive or negative target pictures (Experiment 1) or words (Experiments 2 & 3). Evaluative categorization responses to these target stimuli were significantly influenced by the valence of the prime. First, it was demonstrated that high anxious participants were selectively slowed when the subliminally presented prime was negative (Experiments 1 & 2). Second, the affective congruence between primes and targets also exerted an influence on the responses, but in a direction that is opposite to what is typically observed in affective priming research. These reverse priming effects are situated within a series of recent similar findings, and implications for theories of affective priming are discussed. A new method allowing a reduction in the probability of clipping in discrete multitone (DMT)-based transceivers is described. The method does not use any kind of precoding and can easily be implemented within conventional DMT-transceivers. The main advantage of the proposed method is an improvement of system performance in terms of overall signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs): with the simplest implementation option of the proposed method, up to about 8 dB improvement in the SNR as compared with previously reported brute force clipping methods can be achieved  相似文献

The authors of this reply article note that B. Gawronski, E. P. LeBel, K. R. Peters, and R. Banse (see record 2009-05290-002) (a) expressed agreement in their comment with the analysis put forward in the target article (J. De Houwer, S. Teige-Mocigemba, A. Spruyt, & A. Moors) (see record 2009-05290-001) and (b) pointed to a further implication for the way in which the implicitness of a measure should be examined. The current authors note that B. A. Nosek and A. G. Greenwald (see record 2009-05290-003), on the other hand, raised questions in their comment about the definition of the concept “implicit” in the target article, arguing for a fundamentally different approach to measurement that emphasizes not theoretical understanding but usefulness for predicting behavior. In this reply, the current authors respond to these comments and argue that when theoretical claims are made about measures, these claims should be backed up with appropriate evidence. In the absence of basic research, measures and their relation to behavior can only be described. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The finding that naming responses can be affectively primed suggests (a) that stimulus evaluation does not depend on participants having an explicit evaluative processing goal, and (b) that the perception of an affectively polarized stimulus can result in the preactivation of memory representations of affectively related stimuli. However, in all published studies that demonstrated significant affective priming of naming responses, both the primes and the targets were repeatedly presented. Hence, one cannot rule out the possibility that stimulus repetition is a prerequisite for obtaining affective priming of naming responses. We examined (a) whether affective priming of naming responses can be obtained in the absence of stimulus repetition, and (b) whether affective priming in the naming task is affected by the number of stimulus presentations. Results show that affective priming of naming responses does not depend on stimulus repetition. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

In the affective-priming paradigm, target stimuli are preceded by evaluatively polarized prime stimuli and then are to be classified as either good or bad as fast as possible. The typical and robust finding is assimilation: Primes facilitate the processing of evaluatively consistent targets relative to evaluatively inconsistent targets. Nevertheless, contrast effects have repeatedly been observed. The authors propose a new psychophysical account of normal (assimilative) and reversed (contrastive) priming effects and test new predictions derived from it in 5 studies: In Studies 1 and 2, the authors' account is shown to provide a better explanation of contrastive effects in a priming paradigm with two primes than the traditional attentional account does. Furthermore, as predicted by the new account, contrast effects emerge at an intermediate stimulus-onset asynchrony (SOA, Study 3) and even with short SOAs when target onset takes participants by surprise (Study 4). Finally, the use of extremely valenced primes triggers corrective efforts (Study 5) as predicted. Implications for priming measures of evaluative associations are discussed. Specific anions in tubular fluid, including uropontin (UP), the urinary form of human osteopontin (OPN), block adhesion to renal tubular cells of the most common crystal in kidney stones, calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM). In this study, monkey renal epithelial cells (BSC-1 line) in monolayer culture constitutively secreted UP into the culture medium. COM crystals added to the medium avidly bound previously secreted UP, reducing its concentration by 46% one hour later. However, the net UP content of cultures after a 24-hour exposure to COM crystals was increased by 18%. Northern blotting showed that the constitutively expressed gene encoding human OPN was maximally stimulated in BSC-1 cells after exposure to COM crystals for 12 hours. Two other calcium-containing crystals, hydroxyapatite and brushite, did not alter OPN gene expression or protein production. OPN mRNA expression was enhanced in canine renal epithelial cells (MDCK line) after exposure to COM crystals for six hours, whereas the constitutive expression of murine OPN mRNA by 3T3 fibroblasts was unchanged. In vivo this glycoprotein could defend the cell against adhesion of crystals in tubular fluid, and/or promote renal interstitial fibrosis in subjects with heavy crystalluria.  相似文献

The complete nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrial DNA of the amphioxus Branchiostoma lanceolatum has been determined. This mitochondrial genome is small (15 076 bp) because of the short size of the two rRNA genes and the tRNA genes. In addition, this genome contains a very short non-coding region (57 bp) with no sequence reminiscent of a control region. The organisation of the coding genes, as well as of the two rRNA genes, is identical to that of the sea lamprey. Some differences in the repartition of the tRNA genes occur when compared to the lamprey. The mitochondrial codon usage of the amphioxus is reminiscent of that of urochordates since the AGA codon is read as a glycine and not as a stop codon as in vertebrates. Moreover, the base composition at the wobble positions of the codon is strongly biased toward guanine. Altogether, these data clearly emphasise the close relationships between amphioxus and vertebrates, and reinforce the notion that prochordates may be viewed as the brother group of vertebrates.  相似文献

Summary A new simple, and rapid method is described for evaluating the stability of vitamin A in oils. The acceleration is obtained at room temperature (20°C) by spreading the oil over a neutral carrier (glass beads), thus obtaining greatly expanded surface areas, and consequent increased exposure to air. Comparative tests were conducted involving the Active Oxygen Method (“Swift” test) and, while the results were inconclusive, striking deviations in results were noted.  相似文献
