Causes of lethal outcome in hypertension

Comparative analysis of the causes of fatal outcomes in hypertensive disease is presented on the grounds of postmortem findings in 2,091 patients who had died in hospitals in the period between 1953 and 1975. It was established that the mortality of disorders of cerebral circulation reduced significantly in 1973--75 as compared to that in 1963--05 and 1953--55. One fourth of patients with hypertensive disease died of myocardial infarction. It was noted that death of renal failure among patients with hypertensive disease decreased progressively.     

The effect of mutation in the NS gene on the biological properties of the influenza virus

The biological properties of influenza virus strain A/PR/8/34, virulent from mice, and its variant 25A-1, obtained by hybridization with avirulent strain A/Leningrad. This reassortant 25A-1 included 7 genes of its virulent parent strain and only gene NS of the avirulent one, which contained a single mutation in position 798 (ATG=>ATA), inducing amino acid change MET=>IIe in position 100 of the polypeptide chain of protein NS2. The loss of pathogenic properties by strain A/PR/8/34 was achieved by replacing the single gene NS with an analogous mutant gene of the variant strain A/Leningrad, adapted to low temperatures. The single-gene reassortant 25A-1 thus obtained possessed, besides decreased capacity for multiplication in the lungs of mice, ts phenotype on MDCK cells, but exhibited no thermal sensitivity in cell systems of avian origin. The above-mentioned phenotypic changes in reassortant 25A-1 were due to disturbances in virus-specific protein synthesis at early and late stages, as detected in vivo and in vitro.

Therapeutic effectiveness of bonafton and rimantadine in influenza

The therapeutic effectiveness of bonaphthone and rimantadine was studied by treatment of 439 patients with influenza between 18 and 21 years of age (bonaphthone 94, controls 105, rimantadine 120, controls 120). No therapeutic effectiveness of bonaphthone was established in the study. When rimantadine was given to the patients from the 1st day of the disease, shorter intervals of normalization of the temperature, disappearance of toxicity and catarrhal symptoms were observed than in patients treated with symptomatic drugs. During the period of rimantadine therapy the rate of findings the influenza antigen in smears from the nasal mucosa was lower, but after termination of the course of treatment the antigen was found twice as frequently as in the control group. With the positive therapeutic effect in patients treated with rimantadine, the diagnostic rise of antibody in this group was observed in a lower per cent of cases than in the control group (13 and 20%, respectively). The results of immunofluorescent and serological studies indicate a possible virus reproduction-inhibiting effect of rimantadine. This, however, requires further study. On the basis of the above observations rimantadine may be recommended for treatment of patients with influenza.     

Current approaches to the prevention of infectious complications in heart surgery

Due to changes of humoral immunity, patients with rheumatic heart disease present, even before the operation, a high-risk group with regard to the development of infectious complications. Contamination of intraoperative material was revealed in 61.7% of cases during the operation. Extracorporeal circulation increases the cefotaxime half-life period which is in direct proportional dependence of the period of time between the beginning of the administration of the agent and the beginning of extracorporeal circulation. Immunocorrection by means of myelopid in the early postoperative period accelerates restoration of cellular and humoral immunity, and reduces the frequency of pneumonia occurrence and suppuration of the postoperative wound. Therefore, the prevention of infectious complications after operations on an open heart should be complex and should include broad-spectrum antibiotics and immunocorrective therapy.     

Neuroimmune relations in the rat thymus caused by recombinant interleukin-1beta administration

Interrelations among changes in 11-oxycorticosteroids (11-OSC) in blood plasma, catecholamines (CA), and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in nerve fibres of the thymus, as well as qualitative content and proliferative capacity of thymic and blood cells under the effect of the rat recombinant interleukin-1 beta (IL-1beta) normally and under conditions of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical depression, were studied. The changes were the most obvious within 15 and 120 min following the IL-2 beta administration: elevation of the 11-OSC, increase in the CA content, and decrease in the AChE activity in thymic nerve fibres. Preliminary administration of dexamethasone prevented the effects.
