Autonomy and job satisfaction in task-oriented groups.

Ss were placed in apparent 3-person communication structures in which written notes were used to create illusions of centrality (or peripherality) and of autonomy (or dependence). A simple task was given requiring coordination of the Ss' activities. Results indicate that "positional autonomy is a major determinant of job satisfaction in task-oriented groups." The relationship between autonomy and job satisfaction seems to be mediated by satisfaction of a need for autonomy. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

Comparison of hemodynamic and regional blood flow changes at equivalent stages of endotoxin and hemorrhagic shock

Hemodynamic, respiratory, and regional blood flow measurements were carried out in two groups of monkeys at three roughly equivalent stages of endotoxin and hemorrhagic shock. Comparisons revealed characteristic differences at the two early stages, particularly in systemic vascular resistance and the pattern of distribution of cardiac output. However, at the final stage of shock, these patterns had merged and there were no characteristic differences between the two groups. The pathologic significance of these findings, in terms of the endotoxin theory of irreversible hemorrhagic shock and the realtive contributions of vasoactive humoral substances at various stages of the two forms of shock, is discussed.     

School Psychology.

While the data is interesting, the author's hope that a follow-up study will also show where the training given enables the doctoral graduates to assist in developing a criterion-referenced marking system, and to employ an educational versus a medical model for dealing with disturbed behavior. Diagnostician, EdS, and PhD programs for school psychologists in Michigan: A correction and an addition.

Reports an error in "State Certification of School Psychologists" by Walter L. Hodges (American Psychologist, 1960[June], Vol 15, 346-349; see record 1961-02947-001). In Table 1 on page 347, for the University of Michigan, items are listed incorrectly. This article provides the corrections, and points out the rather effective compromise on the much debated problem of teacher certification and teaching experience. We believe that there are two good routes to becoming a school psychologist, one through psychology and the other through education, but course work is necessary in both. We now have a new academic degree, Specialist in Education (EdS), awarded by the Graduate School of the University of Michigan. This requires the completion of a carefully prepared program of studies leading to specific occupational opportunities. We do not refer to those who complete the diagnostician or EdS program as school psychologists, however they may be designated by employing institutions. Reaction between chlorophosphazenes and silicon alkoxides—formation of temperature-stable thermosetting materials

The reaction between chlorophosphazenes and silicon alkoxides has been studied as a means of preparing temperature-stable thermosetting resinous materials. If the silicon alkoxide is polyfunctional in straight-chain lower alkoxy groups the usual reaction is elimination of alkyl chloride and formation of a thermosetting resinous product. The mechanism of this reaction is discussed. Other reactions occurring in the treatment of chlorophosphazenes with silicon alkoxides are also discussed. Asbestos laminates which retain much of their strength when heated to 500° for 50 hours in air can be prepared from the thermosetting resinous products resulting from the reaction between chlorophosphazenes and silicon alkoxides.     

Obituary: Willard Clifford Olson (1899-1978).

Willard C. Olson, former dean of the School of Education of the University of Michigan, died at the Huron Valley Lodge and Nursing Home, not far from his Ann Arbor residence, October 30, 1978. His survivors include his wife, the former Violet Hunt Pickard, a daughter, Mrs. Mary Ann Hayes, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a brother, and a sister.
