Results from the ORPHEUS dark matter detector

The ORPHEUS dark matter detector consists of 450 g superconducting tin granules with diameters of 28 and 36 μm. The detector has been operating in the shallow site of the underground laboratory in Bern (70 m.w.e). First preliminary results on WIMP detection sensitivity will be presented.     

Processor membership in asynchronous distributed systems

Presents protocols for determining processor membership in asynchronous distributed systems that are subject to processor and communication faults. These protocols depend on the placement of a total order on broadcast messages. The types of systems for which each of these protocols is applicable are characterized by the properties of the communication mechanisms and by the availability of stable storage. In the absence of stable storage or of a mechanism for distinguishing promptly delivered messages, the authors show that no membership protocol can exist. They also discuss their experience in implementing these membership protocols

A prospective study of closure techniques of abdominal incisions in infants and children

In a prospective study of layered versus mass closure of abdominal incisions in infants and children, 34 cases underwent wound closure by layered and mass closure technique on an alternate basis. All the patients were assessed for their nutritional status and haemoglobin level pre-operatively, and wound complications were compared with respect to closure technique, nutritional status and normal haemoglobin level. Presence of protein energy malnutrition and anaemia did not increase the risk of wound complications with either of the technique.     

After the menopause: tamoxifen and other new prevention maintenance therapies

INTRODUCTION: Parvovirus B19 infection is frequent. Primary infection leads to diverse skin manifestations including the recently described gloves-and-socks papulopurpura. CASE REPORT: A patient presented with a papulopurpuric eruption on the nose, hands, feet and perineum with cheilitis and high-grade fever. Parvovirus B19 serology showed characteristic IgG on the 15th day after the initial eruption demonstrating the seroconversion. Cold agglutinins were positive during the eruption and negative after regression. DISCUSSION: The gloves-and-socks papulopurpura syndrome was initially described in 1990. Since that time 20 cases have been reported. In 7 cases, primary parvovirus B19 infection was proven and viral infections were suspected in the others (measles, coxsackie B6, hepatitis B, Epstein-Barr virus). Our case evidenced here to undescribed skin manifestations and the development of cold agglutinins. The presence of cold agglutinins at eruption could explain the acral localizations observed in this syndrome.     

Identification of a gene that causes primary open angle glaucoma

Glaucoma is a major cause of blindness and is characterized by progressive degeneration of the optic nerve and is usually associated with elevated intraocular pressure. Analyses of sequence tagged site (STS) content and haplotype sharing between families affected with chromosome 1q-linked open angle glaucoma (GLC1A) were used to prioritize candidate genes for mutation screening. A gene encoding a trabecular meshwork protein (TIGR) mapped to the narrowest disease interval by STS content and radiation hybrid mapping. Thirteen glaucoma patients were found to have one of three mutations in this gene (3.9 percent of the population studied). One of these mutations was also found in a control individual (0.2 percent). Identification of these mutations will aid in early diagnosis, which is essential for optimal application of existing therapies.     

Comparison of Displacement and Mixing Diffusers

In order to cumpare the peformance of different supply diffuers of ventilation air, the airflow passern, temperature stratifiation and contaminant dispersion in a furnitured office ventilated by three kinds of air diffuer were numerically investigated. The air diffuers studied in this paper are a quarter-cylinder displacement diffuer on the floor and mixing diffuers (linear and vortex diffuers) on the ceiling. The heat sources in the of-fice are considered to be 50% convective and 50% radiative. The k-? two-equatwn model of turbulence is employed to predict the turbulent diffusion. The results show that the displacement diffuser provides a rather uniform flow field with low velocify in most areas, and the vertical temperature difference from floor to ceiling is as high as 6 K. With the linear diffuser, the air velociry is high, and the temperature is uniform both horizontally and vertically. The air velocity generated by the vortex diffuser is moderate. The distributions of the temperature and the contaminant are rather uniform.     

Elastic constants of face-centered cubic and L1<Subscript>2</Subscript> Ni-Si alloys: Composition and temperature dependence

The adiabatic elastic stiffness constants C _ij of Ni-Si single-crystal solid-solution alloys of two slightly different compositions, 10.78 and 11.17 at. pct Si, were measured over the temperature range from 20 °C to 900 °C using the rectangular parallelepiped resonance method. The isotropic elastic constants of the polycrystalline ordered intermetallic compound Ni₃Si containing 23 at. pct Si were also measured over this temperature range. Values of the C _ij for Ni₃Si were estimated from the data on the polycrystalline alloy, as well as from published data in the literature on isomorphous ternary ordered intermetallic compounds containing different amounts of Si. Using measured values and previously published data, the stiffness constants of Ni₃Ti were estimated; these are the only available data on this alloy. The estimated single-crystal elastic constants of Ni₃Si, as well as the experimentally measured bulk modulus, are considerably smaller than published values calculated from first-principles methods. The same is true for the C _ij of Ni₃Ti, but the discrepancies are smaller.     

Compulsory notification of cysticercosis in Ribeir?o Preto-SP, Brazil

Cysticercosis is a severe public health problem in several regions of Asia, Africa and Latin America. Epidemiologic studies based on the frequency of cases observed in specialized neurology, neurosurgery and computed tomography services, at autopsy and in seroepidemiologic studies do not permit the determination of the true prevalence of the disease in the population. The objective of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of cysticercosis by compulsory notification. The coefficient of prevalence was 54 cases/100,000 inhabitants in the municipality of Ribeir?o Preto. The results also indicated that cysticercosis is not under control in our region since 21% of cases presented the active form of the disease. Compulsory notification proved to be a valuable resource for the epidemiologic study of cysticercosis, also permitting the mapping of more affected areas for a better direction of prevention strategies.     

Selective monitoring of peptidase activities with synthetic polypeptide substrates and polyion-sensitive membrane electrode detection

A novel method to monitor specific peptidase activities in biological samples as complex as undiluted plasma/blood is described. The approach is based on the design of synthetic polypeptide substrates in which di- or triarginine sequences are linked to each other via one or more other amino acids recognized specifically by the peptidase to be determined. Detection of chymotrypsin and renin activities using synthetic substrates P4 (F-R-R-R-F-V-R-R-F-NH2) and P5 (R-R-R-L-L-R-R-L-L-R-R-R), respectively, serves to demonstrate the principles of this new assay system. A polyion-sensitive membrane electrode, prepared by doping polymer films with dinonylnaphthalene-sulfonate (DNNS), is shown to exhibit significant nonequilibrium electromotive force (EMF) responses toward these and other polycationic substrates at microgram/milliliter levels under physiological conditions. The same electrode, however, exhibits much smaller total EMF response toward the shorter fragments of the synthetic peptides generated by peptidase activity; hence, the addition of peptidase to a solution containing the synthetic substrate yields a change in electrode EMF response, the rate of which is proportional to the activity of peptidase present. Other synthetic polycationic peptides as well as natural polycationic peptides (e.g., protamine) that lack specific cleavage sites for chymotrypsin and renin, yet are detected by the DNNS-based membrane electrode, do not elicit any significant change in EMF response in the presence of the peptidases, confirming the feasibility and utility of the proposed bioanalytical method.
