The dynamic clinical manifestations of ischemic heart disease during the rehabilitation at a low-altitude health resort of patients who have undergone surgical myocardial revascularization

Left ventricular myocardial contractility was found essential in dynamics of clinical IHD picture in patients on rehabilitation treatment at low mountain resorts. All the patients have previously undergone surgical myocardial revascularization. Patients with normal left ventricular myocardial contractility benefited most of all.     

Dormant forms of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis during interaction with green algae and their exometabolites (population dynamics and ultrastructure)

The dynamics of the transition of Y.pseudotuberculosis to the latent (noncultivable) state in sterile soil extraction and in soil extraction, containing Scenedesmus algae or their exometabolites, was evaluated by the bacteriological method and with the use of polymerase chain reaction. The formation of Y.pseudotuberculosis latent forms achieved its highest rate under the action of algal exometabolites (on day 11), while in the presence of algal cells such formation was delayed to 3-5 months. The partial reversion of Y.pseudotuberculosis nonculativable forms to vegetative, bacteriologically detectable forms occurred under the action of fetal serum, as well as live or killed infusoria. Transmission electron microscopy demonstrated that noncultivable Y.pseudotuberculosis had a round form, diminished cell size, denser cytoplasm and enlarged cytoplasmic space. The reversible transition of bacteria to the latent state is regarded as their adaptation to unfavorable factors during their existence in soils and water reservoirs.     

The ultrasonic diagnosis of acute thrombophlebitis of the vena saphena magna

A total of 321 patients with suspected acute thrombophlebitis were examined. There were 92 men (30%) and 229 women (70%). For control 15 patients without lower limb vein abnormalities and 19 ones with uncomplicated varicose disease were examined. Ultrasonic examinations using Ultramark-8 (Medata, Sweden) device were carried out in all the patients. Of the 313 cases (in 8 patients the diagnosis of acute thrombophlebitis was not confirmed by ultrasonic examination) ultrasonography results were erroneous in only 6 cases when assessing the proximal borderline of the great subcutaneous femoral vein thrombosis. Hence, the accuracy of duplex scanning in assessment of the proximal border of thrombosis in acute thrombophlebitis was 98.6% in our study. Ultrasonic angio-scanning in patients with superficial thrombophlebitis give reliable and valuable information about the presence, type, and extension of the pathologic process. This helps to optimally solve the therapeutic policy problems and adequately plan surgical intervention.     

The architectonics of the lymphatic networks in the sheep heart

Lymphatic networks of the heart were studied in sheep. Principal scheme of lymphatic networks structural organization in endocardium, myocardium and epicardium of the mammals studied was established to have a series of regularities similar to those in man and animals although possessing specific peculiarities. Lymphomicrocirculatory bed of the heart is composed of interdependent lymphatic networks of endocardium, myocardium and epicardium. Endocardial and epicardial lymphatic networks are plane and single-layered, while myocardial one is spatial. All heart coats lymphatic networks are characterized with local peculiarities (different loop parameters, capillary diameter and density in some areas) which indicates varying drainage and state of metabolism in different heart region.     

Effect of heparin on the lipid peroxidation reaction of erythrocytes and their stability

Physiological concentration (10 units/ml) of heparin activates ascorbate-dependent lipid peroxidation of erythrocytes and reduces their stability in the citrate-phosphate buffer (pH 3.0). In a concentration of 100 units/ml heparin does not influence the thermal (62 degrees) oxidation of methyloleate. It follows that heparin is not direct prooxidant.     

The possibility of preserving the causative agent of plague in soil in resting (nonculturable) form

The purpose of this study was to find criteria characteristic for patients in need of care and social services. The criteria should serve as a guideline for patients and staff to facilitate care planning before discharge. The sample consisted of 49 patients, born before 1925, in need of emergency inpatient treatment, admitted to medical- or orthopaedic wards. Data of the patient's self care needs were collected by interviews, assessment of self care status and need of treatment. The patients could be divided into three groups depending on type of discharge. Group A (n = 27) discharged home, group B (n = 7) discharged to geriatric clinic and group C (n = 15) discharged and in need of further care and social services. Criteria indicating the patients further assistance from the community were in group C (medical- and orthopaedic wards) deficit in daily living activities and locomotion. Group B had an increased need of support from the physiotherapist and the occupational therapist, in locomotion as well as daily living activities The physician's assessment showed that the criteria behind the decision "no further medical treatment appropriate" and "ready for discharge" were not related to medical impairment but to lack of self care, need of care, rehabilitation and social services.
