On August 23, 2009, psychology lost an innovative researcher with the passing, at 86, of Wallace E. Lambert. A professor of psychology at McGill University from 1954 until 1990, Wallace (“Wally”) Lambert was among the founders of psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics. His highly productive career included contributions to social and cross-cultural psychology (intergroup attitudes, child-rearing values, and psychological consequences of living in multicultural societies), language education (the French immersion program), and bilingualism (measurement of language dominance, attitudes and motivation in second-language learning, and social, cognitive, and neuropsychological consequences of bilingualism). Indeed, because of the scope and influence of his work, Wally Lambert is widely considered the father of the psychological study of bilingualism. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration daily sea surface temperature (SST) products based on Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR) and Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) have been used to understand the variability in the tropical Indian Ocean SST. These products are comparable with the deep sea moored buoy observations and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) SST in the tropical Indian Ocean. However considerable difference is noticed between these satellite SST products and deep sea buoys, especially at the intraseasonal time scale. Further the first Complex Empirical Orthogonal Function (CEOF) mode of TMI and AVHRR SST explains respectively 46.49% and 46.19% of the total variance. The second CEOF mode of TMI and AVHRR SST explains respectively 23.19% and 18.94% of the total SST variance in the tropical Indian Ocean. The AVHRR SST product is important because this daily product has been available since 1985. The analysis shows that AMSR measurements are contributing considerably to the understanding of the tropical Indian Ocean SST variability. Though satellite SST products are able to capture the observed intraseasonal variability reasonably well, more accurate satellite SST products are therefore necessary to understand the climatologically important Indian Ocean region and its air–sea interaction processes.  相似文献

This paper is a light microscopical study describing the detailed morphology and quantitative distribution of local circuit neurones in areas 25, 32, and 24b of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in the rat. Cortical interneurones were identified immunocytochemically by their expression of calretinin (CR), parvalbumin (PV), and calbindin D-28k (CB) immunoreactivity. Neurones immunoreactive for gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) were also investigated, as were interneurones containing reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) diaphorase activity. Several distinct classes of CR+, PV+, and CB+ neurones were identified; the most frequent were: bipolar/bitufted CR+ cells in upper layer 3; multipolar PV+ neurones in layers 3 and 5; and bitufted/multipolar CB+ neurones in lower layer 3. CB+ neurones resembling Martinotti and neurogliaform cells were also present in layers 5/6. The morphologies and depth distributions of each cell type were consistent across the three areas of mPFC studied. Seven classes of diaphorase-reactive mPFC neurone are described; these cells were composed about 0.8% of the total neurone population and had a peak distribution located in mid- to lower layer 5 in each area. In areas 32 and 25, three defined bands of diffuse NADPH diaphorase staining were located in layer 2 and in upper and deep layer 5. Diaphorase reactivity was very infrequently colocalised with either CR, PV, or CB immunoreactivities. The numerical densities of neurones (N(V), number of cells per mm3) in each layer were calculated stereologically. The mean total neuronal N(V) estimate for areas 25, 32, and 24b was 51,603 +/- 3,324 (mean +/- S.D.; n = 8). Significant interareal differences were detected. From cortical thickness data and neuronal N(V) estimates, the absolute number of neurones under 1 mm2 of cortical surface (N(C)) have been derived. The mean N(C) value for areas 25, 32, and 24b was 57,328 +/- 7,505 neurones. In immunolabelled Nissl-stained sections, CR+ neurones constituted an overall 4.0%, PV+ cells 5.6%, and CB+ 3.4% of the total neurone populations in mPFC. GABA+ cells represented a mean of 16.2% (14.8-17.2%) of neurones in areas 25, 32 and 24b. The absolute numbers of CR+, PV+, CB+, and GABA+ neurones within individual layers in a column of cortex under 1 mm2 of cortical surface (N(L)) have also been derived, with significant interareal differences in N(L) values being detected. The data provide the structural basis for a qualitative and quantitative definition of local cortical circuits in the rat mPFC.  相似文献

Three taxa of the lantana plant (Lantana camara var.Aculeata) I (white-pink), II (yellow-pink), and III (yellow-red)-differed in the content of lantadenes and compounds X, Y, and Z. Lantadene A, lantadene B, and lantadene C were the major lantadenes of taxon III. It contained small amounts of lantadene D. Taxa I and II contained very small amounts of lantadene A and lantadene B. Compounds X, Y, and Z were the major constituents of taxa I and II, and they constituted 59% and 92% of the total constituents in these taxa, respectively. Ingestion of lantana leaf powder of taxon III by male guinea pigs caused severe hepatotoxicity. Taxon I elicited mild hepatotoxicity in one out of six animals while taxon II was nontoxic. The biological and ecological significance of the presence of high amounts of compounds X, Y, and Z in taxa I and n is not known.  相似文献

There is an increasing need to get updated information regarding the changes on earth’s surface. The information obtained can be used in a wide range of applications including disaster management, land-use investigation etc. The high-resolution remote sensing images obtained from satellites provide us with an opportunity to detect changes on earth’s surface between various time intervals. In this paper, an unsupervised object-based change detection (OBCD) method is proposed to detect changes in high resolution bi-temporal satellite images. To detect changes, a novel multi-feature non-seed-based region growing (MF-NSRG) algorithm is proposed for image segmentation based on heterogeneity minimization that uses textural heterogeneity along with spectral and spatial heterogeneity during region growing. The performance of MF-NSRG algorithm is further improved by using Harris Hawk, a recently proposed metaheuristic algorithm, which is used to obtain optimal values of segmentation parameters. Finally, the feature maps extracted from the pre-change and post-change segmented images are analysed using histogram trend similarity (HTS) approach to detect changes. The proposed approach is known as object-based change detection using Harris Hawk (OBCD-HH). The proposed OBCD-HH approach is applied on two datasets: xBD and Onera Satellite Change Detection (OSCD) dataset. Its performance is compared with existing state-of-the-art algorithms and results show the superiority of the proposed approach.

Due to the tremendous costs and difficulties associated with flare measurements, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation could be a viable approach to predict the combustion efficiency as well as VOC/NO x emissions from industrial flaring activities. However, consisting of a large number of reactions and species, most of the detailed kinetic mechanisms for the speciation study of flaring events are too complicated to use in the CFD simulation of industrial-scale flares. A reduced combustion mechanism will lead to improved computational efficiency; however, its fidelity must be validated. This study uses 2D CFD simulations and 1D Chemkin simulations to validate a reduced mechanism developed for the combustion of light hydrocarbons up to C1–C3. This mechanism, consisting of 50 species and 337 reactions, is applicable to C1–C3 hydrocarbons and can be used to predict the combustion efficiency and fate of pollutants released from industrial flares composed of C1–C3 waste gases. In this article, experimental data reported in the literatures have been used to validate the reduced mechanism. The key performance indicators used for comparison are laminar burner-stabilized flames, laminar flame speeds, adiabatic flame temperatures, ignition delay tests, and temperature and concentration profiles of the critical species. The software package CHEMKIN 4.1.1 was used to verify the computational results of laminar flame speeds, adiabatic flame temperatures, and ignition delays. The axial profiles of various critical species are simulated using the commercial CFD software package FLUENT. It is demonstrated that simulation results using this reduced mechanism are in good agreement with reported experimental results.  相似文献

This study involves the evaluation of the effect of certain stabilizers, that is, citric acid (CT), tartaric acid (TA) and boric acid (BA) on the degradation of ascorbic acid (AH(2) ) in oil-in-water cream formulations exposed to the UV light and stored in the dark. The apparent first-order rate constants (0.34-0.95 × 10(-3) min(-1) in light, 0.38-1.24 × 10(-2) day(-1) in dark) for the degradation reactions in the presence of the stabilizers have been determined. These rate constants have been used to derive the second-order rate constants (0.26-1.45 × 10(-2) M(-1) min(-1) in light, 3.75-8.50 × 10(-3) M(-1) day(-1) in dark) for the interaction of AH(2) and the individual stabilizers. These stabilizers are effective in causing the inhibition of the rate of degradation of AH(2) both in the light and in the dark. The inhibitory effect of the stabilizers is in the order of CT > TA > BA. The rate of degradation of AH(2) in the presence of these stabilizers in the light is about 120 times higher than that in the dark. This could be explained on the basis of the deactivation of AH(2) -excited triplet state by CT and TA and by the inhibition of AH(2) degradation through complex formation with BA. AH(2) leads to the formation of dehydroascorbic acid (A) by chemical and photooxidation in cream formulations.  相似文献

A low profile dual band resonant cavity antenna that incorporates double sided partially reflective surface (PRS) with complementary layers is presented here. The PRS is formed by printing periodic array of complementary metallic square loops on the opposite sides of the dielectric material. The PRS has been used as a superstrate, placed above the radiating microstrip patch. This PRS acts as a dual band matching section between the microstrip patch and free space, hence resulting in dual resonance. The proposed structure has been analyzed using equivalent circuit model. Parametric analysis of the sensitive structural parameters has also been discussed. To validate the design, the simulation analysis and experimental results obtained from a prototype operating at 8.9 and 9.4 GHz are presented. The measured gain at the two frequencies is 10.2 and 8.5 dBi, respectively. The overall size of the antenna is 1.78λ × 1.78λ × 0.09 λ with λ corresponding to 8.9 GHz.  相似文献

The present research compared the effect of chlorine dioxide (CD) gas, aqueous CD and aqueous sodium hypochlorite (SHC) treatments on the inactivation of a five strain mixture of Listeria monocytogenes – containing biofilms. Four day old biofilms were developed on a stainless steel (SS 304) coupon by using a mixture of five cultures of L. monocytogenes (Scott A, N1-227, 103M, 82 and 311) using a 100% relative humidity (RH) dessicator for incubation at room temperature (22 ± 2 °C). After biofilm development, coupons were rinsed and dried for 2 h and treated with 0.3 mg/l CD gas at 75% RH, 7 mg/l of aqueous CD and 50 mg/l SHC. Initial log10 population of biofilm cells before CD gas, aqueous CD and SHC treatment was 4.80, 5.09 and 4.95 log10 CFU/cm2. The Weibull model was used to fit non-linear survivor curves. Treatments and time points of 0.3 mg/l CD gas and 7 mg/l aq. CD solution were significantly different (p < 0.05). A 10 min treatment of 0.3 mg/l CD gas, 7 mg/l of aq. CD, and 50 mg/l SHC resulted in reductions of 3.21, 3.74 and 3.09 log10 CFU/cm2, respectively. At 10 min, all treatments were not statistically different (p > 0.05). Low levels of CD (0.3 mg/l CD gas and 7 mg/l aq. CD solution) for 10 min resulted in similar log reductions compared to 50 mg/l SHC.  相似文献

A statistical metric, based on the magnitude and standard deviations along linear projections of clustered array response data, was utilized to facilitate an evaluation of the performance of detector arrays in various vapor classification tasks. This approach allowed quantification of the ability of a 14-element array of carbon black-insulating polymer composite chemiresistors to distinguish between members of a set of 19 solvent vapors, some of which vary widely in chemical properties (e.g., methanol and benzene) and others of which are very similar (e.g., n-pentane and n-heptane). The data also facilitated evaluation of questions such as the optimal number of detectors required for a specific task, whether improved performance is obtained by increasing the number of detectors in a detector array, and how to assess statistically the diversity of a collection of detectors in order to understand more fully which properties are underrepresented in a particular set of array elements. In addition, the resolving power of arrays of carbon black-polymer composites was compared to the resolving power of specific collections of bulk conducting organic polymer or tin oxide detector arrays in a common set of vapor classification tasks.  相似文献
