Analysis of Combined Systems of Two Endoreversible Engines

A single endoreversible engine can operate as a cooler, a true heat engine, a heat pump, or a refrigerator. We investigate how many different modes of operation a combined system of two endoreversible engines may display. Special attention is paid to the independent combined system which neither consumes nor supplies power.     

Searching for adverse drug reactions at the margin of scientific fields

Results are presented of a scientometric analysis focusing on peripheral dynamics in a scientific field. We evaluate different techniques on their appropriateness for detecting relations between aspects that seem to be not of central interest but are important in innovative research. We do so in order to quantify the role that adverse drug reactions can play as trigger points in innovative drug research.Paper presented at the Fourth International Conference on Bibliometrics, Informetrics and Scientometrics in Berlin (Germany), September 11–15, 1993.     

Heterogeneous Enzyme Mimics Based on Zeolites and Layered Hydroxides

Careful combination of a metal compound,a ligand and an inorganic support material leads to supramolecular catalysts that mimic the structural, organizational and functional aspects of enzyme activity.After discussing essential features of metalloenzyme-catalyzed reactions and coordination chemistry in inorganic hosts, we present examples of supramolecular materials selected from our own work that eventually resulted in useful catalysts for organic transformations in the liquid phase.     

Six Synthesis Methods for Reversible Logic

The (2 ^w )! reversible transformations on w wires, i.e. reversible logic circuits with w inputs and w outputs, together with the action of cascading, form a group, isomorphic to the symmetric group S ₂ ^w . Therefore, we investigate the group S _n as well as one of its subgroups isomorphic to S _n/2 × S _n/2. We then consider the left cosets, the right cosets, and the double cosets generated by the subgroup. Each element of a coset can function as the representative of the coset. The coset can then be considered as the set of all group elements that differ from the representative by merely multiplying (either to the left or to the right or to both sides) by an arbitrary element of the subgroup. Different choices of the coset space and different choices of the coset representatives lead to six different syntheses for implementing an arbitrary reversible logic operation into hardware. Evaluation of all six methods, by means of three different cost functions (gate cost, switch cost, and quantum cost), leads to a best choice.     

Esterification and Transesterification of Renewable Chemicals

An overview is given of newly developed Lewis or Brønsted acid and base catalysts for esterification, transesterification and ester interchange reactions. The most relevant applications of these catalysts and reactions in the domain of renewable resources, in particular, oils and fats, are discussed.     

The development of a glove-box/Vitrobot combination: air-water interface events visualized by cryo-TEM

Aqueous interfaces are of paramount importance in the study of biological systems as well as in the biomedical sciences. To study these interfaces at the nanometer level it is of interest to develop methods that allow their observation with cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). Prevention of dehydration to preserve the "native" state during sample preparation prior to vitrification is often one of the most important parameters to control in cryo-TEM experiments. For the preparation of these types of samples, we felt the need for an extended workspace with temperature and humidity control; a 'glove-box' that seamlessly connects to the vitrification instrument, the Vitrobot. In this paper we describe the use of the glove-box in the 2D and 3D cryo-TEM study of DNA adsorption and calcium carbonate mineralization to Langmuir films. The data presented illustrates the necessity of a humidity-controlled environment to preserve the original "native" state of the monolayer system.

Layered precursors for new zeolitic materials: Synthesis and characterization of B-RUB-39 and its condensation product B-RUB-41

Condensation of layered silicate precursors leads to new, all silica zeolite frameworks. In order to introduce catalytic functionality, boron has been substituted into the silicate layer of RUB-39 in a single step synthesis process. Condensation of the silicate layer to the zeolite framework of RUB-41, RRO framework structure type, preserved B as constituent of the material. Analysis of structural details obtained from Rietveld analysis of powder diffraction data, ¹¹B and ²⁹Si NMR experiments of the as synthesized precursor as well as of the zeolite condensation product, and crystal chemical reasoning indicates segregation of B on one specific T-site. This T-site is buried in the silicate anionic layer of the precursor shielding the additional negative charge introduced by the trivalent T-atom.     

Effect of the melting temperature on the crystallization behavior of a poly(l‐lactide)/poly(d‐lactide) equimolar mixture

The effect of the final melting temperature (T_f) on the crystallization of poly(l ‐lactide) (PLLA)/poly(d ‐lactide) (PDLA) was studied via a combination of differential scanning calorimetry, wide‐angle X‐ray scattering, polarized optical microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. We observed that a residual stereocomplex (SC) crystal induced the formation of SC crystals during cooling from a T_f (230°C) just above the melting peak of the SC crystals. On cooling from a T_f (240°C) just above the endset temperature of SC crystal melting [T_m(S)(E)], the possible order structure and the strong interchain interaction promoted the preferential crystallization of SC crystals; this enhanced the formation of α crystals. During cooling from a T_f (≥250°C) far above T_m(S)(E), the crystallization peaks of α and SC crystals converged. The FTIR results indicated that the residual SC crystals, possible ordered structure, and interchain interactions in the melt might have been the key factors for the different crystallization of PLLA/PDLA. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, arsenic, selenium, cadmium, mercury and lead in Dutch fishery products 1977-1984

Within the framework of a monitoring programme, carried out by order of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, fishery products from Dutch coastal waters, estuaries and inland waters were investigated for the presence of trace elements. In this report the results for the period 1977-1984 are presented. The investigated fishery products included sole, cod, plaice, herring, eel, pike-perch, shrimp and mussel, in which the elements chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, arsenic, selenium, cadmium, mercury and lead were determined. The results are compared with data from the literature and with the trace element levels usually found in other animal products. The daily intake of trace elements in The Netherlands through the consumption of Dutch fishery products is calculated.
