The slow, laser-induced coalescence of two conjoined, polystyrene spheres levitated in a quadrupole ion trap is investigated by monitoring optical morphology dependent resonances (MDRs) appearing in the fluorescence emission spectrum. The heated bisphere is driven by surface tension to become a single, larger sphere with a volume equal to the combined volumes of the two initial spheres. In the final stage of the structural transformation the particle is a prolate spheroid whose dimensions are ascertained by analyzing frequency shifts of the non-degenerate azimuthal MDRs. The relaxation time for the deformed viscous sphere is used to estimate the polystyrene viscosity and temperature. The study highlights the feasibility of using a temperature-controlled quadrupole ion trap to investigate the coalescence dynamics of viscous microstructures free from the perturbative effects of any solvent or substrate.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of prophylactic epsilon-aminocaproic acid and tranexamic acid to reduce transfusions after primary myocardial revascularization was evaluated in a teaching hospital context. METHODS: Patients (n = 134) received either epsilon-aminocaproic acid (15-g bolus + infusion of 1 g/h), high-dose tranexamic acid (10-g bolus + placebo infusion), or normal saline solution in a double-blind fashion. Anticoagulation and conduct of cardiopulmonary bypass were standardized. RESULTS: Tranexamic acid and epsilon-aminocaproic acid produced a significant reduction in postoperative blood loss compared with placebo (median loss, 438 mL, 538 mL, and 700 mL, respectively). Transfusion of red cells was similar in all three groups. Nonetheless, the percentage of patients receiving hemostatic blood products was significantly decreased in the epsilon-aminocaproic acid group compared with the placebo group (20% versus 43%; p = 0.03). Both tranexamic acid and epsilon-aminocaproic acid significantly decreased total exposure to allogeneic blood products compared with placebo (p = 0.01 and p = 0.05, respectively), and this reduction was clinically important (median exposure, 2, 2, and 7.5 units, respectively). Fibrinolysis was inhibited significantly in both treatment groups. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that either high-dose tranexamic acid or epsilon-aminocaproic acid effectively reduces transfusions in patients undergoing primary, elective myocardial revascularization.  相似文献

Carbanilation reactions of cellulose samples (bleached cotton linters and Avicel) with phenylisocyanate in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) were carried out at 60°C in the presence of various pyridine derivatives. The molecular weight distributions of the resulting cellulose tricarbanilates (CTCs) were measured by high-performance size exclusion chromatography. When pyridine or its derivatives were included in the reactions, the CTCs had reduced degree of polymerization (DP) values compared to those of CTCs prepared without the additives. The cellulose depolymerization was promoted by pyridines with electron-donating substituents and was not favored by pyridines with electron-withdrawing substituents nor with groups at positions ortho to the pyridine ring nitrogen atom. For the 3-, 4-, and 3,4- substituted pyridines, there was a linear relationship between log (weight-average CTC DP) and the pKa (in water) of the pyridine derivative. For 2- and 2,6-substituted pyridines, the DP–pKa relationships were different, probably because of steric effects of the different substituents ortho to the pyridine nitrogen atom. The optimum DMSO : pyridine solvent ratio for cellulose depolymerization during carbanilation in DMSO : pyridine mixtures was 3 : 1. All three components, phenylisocyanate, pyridine or its derivatives, and DMSO, are required for the depolymerization reaction. It is suggested that the depolymerization may be a consequence of cellulose oxidation by DMSO and/or cleavage of glucosidic bonds of partially carbanilated cellulose by reactions promoted by an enhanced solvent effect of DMSO.  相似文献

Cellulose tricarbanilates (CTCs) were prepared from a range of cellulose samples (cotton linters, wood pulps, Avicel, amorphous cellulose, and cellulose II) for molecular weight distribution (MWD) studies by high performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC). The HPSEC columns were calibrated using CTC standards with the aid of a microcomputer. CTCs were prepared by reaction of cellulose samples with phenylisocyanate in pyridine at 80°C. For some samples, e.g., cellulose II, activation with liquid ammonia and pyridine was necessary prior to reaction in pyridine. All samples tested were also derivatised in dimethylsulfoxide at 70°C, although for high molecular weight (MW) cellulose samples some MW reduction occurred in this solvent. Conditions were determined for optimum precipitation of CTCs in aqueous methanol without coprecipitation of low MW impurities.  相似文献

Automated algorithms for multiscale morphometry of neuronal dendrites   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We describe the synthesis of automated neuron branching morphology and spine detection algorithms to provide multiscale three-dimensional morphological analysis of neurons. The resulting software is applied to the analysis of a high-resolution (0.098 microm x 0.098 microm x 0.081 microm) image of an entire pyramidal neuron from layer III of the superior temporal cortex in rhesus macaque monkey. The approach provides a highly automated, complete morphological analysis of the entire neuron; each dendritic branch segment is characterized by several parameters, including branch order, length, and radius as a function of distance along the branch, as well as by the locations, lengths, shape classification (e.g., mushroom, stubby, thin), and density distribution of spines on the branch. Results for this automated analysis are compared to published results obtained by other computer-assisted manual means.  相似文献

During nystagmus induced by the angular vestibuloocular reflex (aVOR), the axis of eye velocity tends to align with the direction of gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA), a process we term "spatial orientation of the aVOR." We studied spatial orientation of the aVOR in rhesus and cynomolgus monkeys before and after midline section of the rostral medulla abolished all oculomotor functions related to velocity storage, leaving the direct optokinetic and vestibular pathways intact. Optokinetic afternystagmus and the bias component of off-vertical-axis rotation were lost, and the aVOR time constant was reduced to a value commensurate with the time constants of primary semicircular canal afferents. Spatial orientation of the aVOR, induced either during optokinetic or vestibular stimulation, was also lost. Vertical and roll aVOR time constants could no longer be lengthened in side-down or supine/prone positions, and static and dynamic tilts of the GIA no longer produced cross-coupling from the yaw to pitch and yaw to roll axes. Consequently, the induced nystagmus remained entirely in head coordinates after the lesion, regardless of the direction of the resultant GIA vector. Gains of the aVOR and of optokinetic nystagmus to steps of velocity were unaffected or slightly increased. These results are consistent with a model in which the direct aVOR pathways are organized in semicircular canal coordinates and spatial orientation is restricted to the indirect (velocity storage) pathways.  相似文献
