Review of Meeting Movies.

Reviews the book, Meeting Movies by Norman N. Holland (see record 2006-11509-000). Meeting Movies is a very personal book in which Holland discusses eight films that have been personally meaningful to him. These films are Casablanca, Vertigo, The Seventh Seal, Freud, Persona, Children of Paradise, Shakespeare in Love, and 8 1/2. Holland describes what he was doing with his life when he saw each of these films, and he discusses how each film affected his life and his career. Some of the movies were seen relatively recently, and some were first viewed over half a century ago. In reading the book, it becomes apparent that Holland loves films. Whenever text is in Roman type, Holland is operating in his reader-response critic mode, and the discussion reads much like any other film criticism. However, the most interesting parts of the book occur when Holland is in free association mode, writing about whatever thoughts the movie being discussed brings to mind. These instances are set off from the regular text by use of italicized text. In summary, Meeting Movies is a good read. Holland is well versed in psychology and especially psychoanalytic approaches, and his criticism of these eight films is consistently interesting. His willingness to self-disclose makes this book all the more fascinating. The book will be rewarding for anyone genuinely interested in the interface of psychology and film. A 10-Gb/s eye-opening monitor IC for decision-guided adaptation ofthe frequency response of an optical receiver

This paper presents a single-chip eye opening monitor IC for decision-guided optimization of the frequency response of an optical receiver. The IC provides an analog output voltage proportional to the horizontal eye opening of a data signal. The chip includes a delay-locked loop for automatic adjustment of the clock phase. It was designed in a 50-GHz-f_T SiGe bipolar technology and dissipates 4.95 W from a -5-V supply

New method for optical transmission beyond dispersion limit

A novel transmission scheme is described that allows transmission spans beyond the usual dispersion limit. Experimental results for 10 Gbit/s transmission at 1.5 mu m via standard fibre are presented. The record distance of 125.8 km is bridged with a directly modulated laser.<>     

10 Gbit/s dispersion supported transmission field trial over 123 kmstandard singlemode fibre for HDTV studio interconnection

A bidirectional studio interconnection system operating at 10 Gbit/s over 123 km installed standard singlemode fibre is presented. Uncompressed HDTV programme channels are transmitted in STM-format without an in-line repeater, using the dispersion supported transmission (DST) method     

Raymond J. Corsini (1914–2008).

Presents an obituary for Raymond J. Corsini, one of psychology’s most prolific authors and editors. Ray’s most important contributions include editing an award-winning four-volume encyclopedia of psychology (1994, Wiley), a dictionary of psychology (1999, Brunner/ Mazel), and one of the leading graduate texts on psychotherapy (Corsini & Wedding, 8th ed., 2008, Cengage), which was translated into more than a dozen languages. However, Ray took the greatest pride in the development of the Corsini 4-R system (also known as Individual Education), an innovative approach to school system reform reform based on democratic principles and Adlerian psychology. (The four Rs were responsibility, respect, resourcefulness, and responsiveness.) Corsini died in Honolulu on November 8, 2008. He is survived by his physician wife, Kleona Rigney, and his social worker daughter, Evelyn Anne Corsini. Both share Ray’s passionate commitment to Adlerian social interest. 10-Gb/s optical transmission up to 253 km via standard single-modefiber using the method of dispersion-supported transmission

Using the new method of dispersion-supported transmission, 10 Gb/s signals at 1.53 μm wavelength are transmitted on standard single-mode fiber with zero dispersion at 1.3 μm via the record length of 253 km without in-line regeneration. Detailed experiments with a directly modulated laser demonstrate the system performance for different fiber lengths ranging from 0 up to 253 km
