In recent years, both functionalist and dynamic systems approaches have assumed increasing prominence in the study of emotion and its development, but the similarities and differences between these perspectives remain largely unexplored and open to more systematic examination. In this article, the authors argue that both approaches share a systems view of emotion and regard emotion in relational, process terms. However, each approach adopts a distinct level of analysis and distinct types of explanation for emotion and its development. Whereas the functionalist approach appeals to formal and final causes to explain patterning in emotion at the level of organism-environment relations, the dynamic systems approach appeals to efficient and material causes to explain emotion at the specific content level of behavior in context. Whether these approaches complement or conflict with one another depends on the extent to which the dynamic systems approach admits abstraction into its explanatory framework. A. An important issue for understanding early cognition is why very young children's real-world representations do not get confused by pretense events. One possible source of information for children is the pretender's behaviors. Pretender behaviors may vary systematically across real and pretend scenarios, perhaps signaling to toddlers to interpret certain events as not real. Pretender behaviors were examined in 2 experiments in which mothers were asked both to pretend to have a snack and really to have a snack with their 18-month-olds. Episodes were analyzed for condition differences in verbal and nonverbal behaviors, including smiling, looking, laughter, and functional movements. Reliable differences were found across conditions for several variables. In a 3rd experiment, children's apparent understanding of pretense in relation to their mothers' behaviors was examined, and significant associations were found with some of the mothers' behavioral changes but not others. Two studies investigated the role of locomotor experience on visual proprioception in 8-month-old infants. Visual proprioception refers to the sense of self-motion induced in a static person by patterns of optic flow. A moving room apparatus permitted displacement of an entire enclosure (except for the floor) or the side walls and ceiling. In Study 1, creeping infants and prelocomotor/walker infants showed significantly greater postural compensation and emotional responses to side wall movement than did same-age prelocomotor infants. Study 2 used true random assignment of prelocomotor infants to locomotor-training (via a powered-mobility device) and no-training conditions. Experimental infants showed powerful effects of locomotor training. These results imply that locomotor experience is playing a causal role in the ontogeny of visual proprioception. A hammerhead ribozyme retroviral construct, denoted RRz2, targeting the coding region of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) tat gene, has shown itself to be effective in a range of test systems. Inhibition of the replication of HIV-1 IIIB and primary drug-resistant strains in pooled transduced CEMT4 cells was consistently found to be more than 80% compared with the control-vector transduced cells, whereas a mutant RRz2 gave approximately 45% inhibition. A multiple HIV-1 passage assay showed the absence of emergence of mutations within the specific viral RNA ribozyme target sequences. This lack of generation of ribozyme "escape mutants" occurred despite the almost complete disappearance of a HIV-1 quasi-species in the testing virus. When RRz2 was tested in peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) from HIV-1-infected patients, paired analysis showed that cell viability in the ribozyme-transduced HIV-1-infected PBLs was significantly higher than that in the vector-transduced cells. This difference in viability (vector versus RRz2) was not observed in PBLs from non-HIV-1-infected donors. Taken together, these results indicate that the transfer of an anti-HIV-1 ribozyme gene into human T lymphocytes could have major impact on viral replication and T cell viability in the HIV-1-infected individual.  相似文献
