A highly linear electrooptic modulator has been designed, fabricated, and evaluated. The design of this modulator consists of only a simple modification to the directional coupler. Two-tone testing has demonstrated that, for an optical modulation depth of 30% per channel, the third-order intermodulation distortion is more than 30 dB lower than that of the conventional directional coupler or Mach-Zehnder modulators. This improvement was not observed to be accompanied by any increase in second harmonic distortion. Aqueous extracts ofNuphar lutea (L.) Sibth. & Sm. leaves (blades plus petioles) and roots plus rhizomes were tested for allelopathic activity using lettuce seedling andLemna minor L. assay systems. The 12.5, 25, 125, and 250 parts per thousand (ppt) treatments of both extracts killed the lettuce seedlings. At 2.5 ppt of extract, radicle growth of lettuce was 29% of the control for leaves and 31% of the control for roots plus rhizomes.Lemna minor frond number was reduced to 34% of the control by the 25 ppt leaf extract and to 43% of the control by the 25 ppt roots plus rhizomes extract.L. minor was killed by concentrations of 125 ppt and above of both plant part extracts. As expected, the frond number and total chlorophyll content measured by theL. minor assay were highly correlated. Osmotic potentials below 143 mOsmol/kg had no influence onL. minor growth. Neither the osmotic potential nor the pH of the undiluted extracts ofN. lutea were in the range known to influence the growth of either lettuce seedlings orL. minor. Recent data suggesting complex I dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD) arises from mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutation does not conclusively answer whether the responsible genetic lesion is inherited (primary) or somatic (secondary). To address this question, we identified a family in which multiple members over three generations are affected with PD through exclusively maternal lines. Cytoplasmic hybrids (cybrids) were created for 15 family members over two generations by transferring each individual's mtDNA to mtDNA-depleted human neuroblastoma cells. Eight of the 15 cybrid lines contained mtDNA obtained from maternally descended family members and seven contained mtDNA from paternally descended family members. After 6 weeks of culture, cybrid cell lines were assayed for complex I activity and oxidative stress, and mitochondrial morphology was analyzed by electron microscopy. Compared with the cybrid lines containing mtDNA from paternal descendants, cybrid lines containing mtDNA from maternal descendants had lower complex I activity, increased reactive oxygen species production, increased radical scavenging enzyme activities, and more abnormal mitochondrial morphologic features. These findings were present in cybrid lines containing mtDNA from maternal descendants with PD as well as in currently asymptomatic young maternal descendants, and support a precedent for inherited mtDNA mutation in some persons with PD. 相似文献

Spores of Bacillus subtilis NCTC 8236 were treated with glutaraldehyde, Lugol's iodine, polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine (PVP-I), sodium hypochlorite or sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC). After exposure survivors were enumerated on nutrient agar containing potential revival agents (subtilisin, lysozyme, calcium dipicolinate, calcium lactate). Of these, only calcium lactate had any significant enhancing effect and then only with iodine-treated spores. Electron and X-ray diffractometry visualize atoms in severely stressed single-crystal silicon and help analyze the resulting phase transformations. Massively parallel computers simulate both diffraction techniques. We study these phase transitions with a number of simulation techniques. We calculate the position of the atoms in the material during the process and display atomic images of the crystal structure as a function of time. Simulated diffraction patterns enable us to follow structural transformations more easily.
