Large laser diode arrays for high-duty-cycle operation

Large arrays stacked 3 cm high, consisting of 38 laser bars 1 cm wide, have been operated at 100 W of average power and 4.5% duty cycle (2400 W peak power) with excellent spectral characteristics. Operation consisted of a burst of 10 150 mu s pulses on a 1 ms period, with burst repetition rates of up to 30 Hz. Conventional operation with 200 and 1000 mu s pulse widths is also reported.<>     

11 W quasi-CW monolithic laser diode arrays

An optical power of 11 W from one facet has been obtained from a 1 cm integrated GaAlAs laser array for 150 ?s is pulse widths (quasi-CW operation). The array consists of 20 tenstripe lasers spaced along the bar, employing about 20% of the facet length for active laser emission.     

Nonunion after a tibial shaft fracture complicating tibial tubercule osteotomy

Tibial shaft fracture after tibial tubercle osteotomy in total knee replacement is a rare complication. We report on a 67-year-old man who had a knee revision arthroplasty in which a long tubercle osteotomy was performed to facilitate exposure. Three weeks after surgery, he presented with a transverse shaft fracture, which became a nonunion requiring surgical management. This shaft nonunion and its solution after tibial tubercle osteotomy is discussed as well as relevant literature.

Fanconi anemia group A and D cell lines respond normally to inhibitors of cell cycle regulation

Cells from patients with Fanconi anemia (FA) show decreased viability and decreased chromosome stability after treatment with DNA cross-linking agents, compared to normal cells. FA cells also show a relative accumulation at the G2/M transition after such treatment. This has suggested a possible checkpoint abnormality. In the studies presented here, treatment with hydroxyurea, caffeine or inhibitors of cell cycle kinases did not reveal abnormalities in survival or chromosome stability in FA-A or FA-D cells. Chromosomal breaks introduced by hydrogen peroxide or methyl methanesulfonate accumulated to the same extent in FA-A or FA-D cells as in normal cells. We conclude that FA-A and FA-D cells respond normally to agents known to alter the cell cycle or introduce DNA strand breaks. FA cells process strand breaks and a variety of DNA monoadducts normally. Our results are compatible with repair of DNA crosslinks being slower in FA than in normal cells and FA cells having normal cell cycle checkpoints.     

High power diode laser arrays

Recent progress in the development of high-power diode laser arrays for solid-state laser pumping is detailed. Advances in available wavelength, efficiency, temperature of operation, duty cycle of operation, and peak and average power levels or densities are described. A packaging architecture capable of addressing the broadest range of pump applications and designs in an economic manner is defined, and a range of such package designs is presented     

High-intensity fibre-coupled diode laser array

An optical fibre that can couple more than 80% of the power from a 100 ?m-wide 10-stripe diode laser array to a 50 ?m core diameter and 0.3 NA optical fibre is demonstrated. Output powers of 850 mWCW and 2.8 W pulsed (200 ns pulse width at 10 kHz repetition rate) are achieved from the output end of the fibre.     

Defeat-induced hypoalgesia in the rat: Effects of conditioned odors, naltrexone, and extinction.

In Experiment 1, male rats were either defeated as a colony intruder by alpha conspecifics or had no defeat experience, and 24 hr later they were given a paw injection of formalin prior to observational tests with or without alpha-colony odors. The combination of defeat and tests with these odors produced conditioned hypoalgesia (i.e., a suppression in paw licking) and freezing. In Experiment 2, defeated rats were given either an injection of naltrexone or saline prior to defeat and 24 hr later prior to testing. An injection of naltrexone prior to defeat increased freezing during defeat and later testing. In contrast, naltrexone during testing did not affect freezing but significantly reduced hypoalgesia. In Experiment 3, a 12-hr exposure session with alpha-colony odors extinguished hypoalgesia in previously defeated rats.
