Discusses the treatment of a 4-yr-old boy for extreme aggression. Treatment was influenced by 2 concepts: preemptive processing and the malevolent attitude. Two incidents in the S's treatment highlight the malevolent attitude and behavior suggestive of preemptive processing. In both situations, anxiety arose and was warded off in a malevolent fashion. The onset of malevolent behavior marked the beginning of an interruption in communication. Interpreting the S's behavior within an interpersonal framework led to the identification of a deviant schema, the malevolent attitude, and its experiential source. Glycosaminoglycans are complex sulfated polysaccharides with a diverse range of biological functions. Three glycosaminoglycan standards--chondroitin sulfate, dermatan sulfate and heparin--were characterized during this study. The interaction of the heparin binding site of protein C inhibitor, represented by the peptide sequence 264-283, in solution with the above glycosaminoglycan standards was studied. Circular dichroism spectroscopy was used to determine the dominant secondary structure induced in the peptide upon binding the relevant glycosaminoglycans. The various glycosaminoglycans induced different secondary structures. The level of induced secondary structure by dermatan sulfate and heparin was approximately twice that induced by chondroitin sulfate. For chondroitin sulfate and heparin, alpha-helix was the dominant ordered secondary structure, whereas for dermatan sulfate the beta-strand conformation dominated. The order of secondary structure induction of the protein C inhibitor peptide by the glycosaminoglycans paralleled the reported biological activities of these glycosaminoglycans for mediation of the biological activity in the intact protein. The strength of the interaction of dermatan sulfate and heparin with the protein C inhibitor peptide was measured by determining the concentration of salt required to inhibit 50% of the interaction. The values determined were 0.1 and 0.3 M salt for dermatan sulfate and heparin, respectively. Intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) has become an effective tool for cancer treatment with radiation. However, even expert radiation planners still need to spend a substantial amount of time adjusting IMRT optimization parameters in order to get a clinically acceptable plan. We demonstrate that the relationship between patient geometry and radiation intensity distributions can be automatically inferred using a variety of machine learning techniques in the case of two-field breast IMRT. Our experiments show that given a small number of human-expert-generated clinically acceptable plans, the machine learning predictions produce equally acceptable plans in a matter of seconds. The machine learning approach has the potential for greater benefits in sites where the IMRT planning process is more challenging or tedious. 相似文献

The effect of visual skills, such as binocularity, on saccadic eye movement test performance is currently unknown. Therefore, the relationship between performance on commonly used clinical saccadic eye movement tests and visual skill was studied in a masked investigation of 181 kindergartners and first graders (mean age 6.25 years) from a middle class, suburban, elementary school near Cleveland, Ohio. The New York State Optometric Association King-Devick saccade test (NYSOA K-D) and the Developmental Eye Movement test (DEM) were employed because they are two commonly used clinical saccadic eye movement tests. A Modified Clinical Technique (MCT) vision screening and Randot stereoacuity test were performed to evaluate other visual skills. Analysis revealed that for the whole study population, total errors on the NYSOA K-D were significantly related to referral on the MCT screening (p = 0.015) and stereoacuity worse than 100 sec arc (p = 0.011). A trend toward significance was also found between DEM ratio and stereoacuity worse than 50 sec arc for the whole study population. However, in the children who passed the MCT, stereoacuity was not found to be significantly related to performance on NYSOA K-D or DEM. Thus, our findings indicate that visual difficulties may affect performance on the NYSOA K-D in this population. 相似文献

The power of proline : Bold amino acid substitutions in sensitive protein regions are frequently unproductive, while more subtle mutations can be sufficient to bring about dramatic changes. But introducing proline at the residue next to the sulfur ligand in P450BM3 (CYP102A1) has the unexpected and desirable effect of enhancing the activity of this fatty acid hydroxylase with a broad range of non‐natural substrates, as illustrated by the figure.
