Re-assembled casein micelles and casein nanoparticles as nano-vehicles for ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids

Food enrichment with nutraceuticals is an important goal, but its effectiveness in preventing diseases depends on preserving the functionality and bioavailability of the bioactive nutraceuticals. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are important nutraceutical lipids, providing protection against cardiovascular and other diseases. Caseins are the major milk proteins whose biological function is to transport calcium, protein and phosphate from mother to the neonate. Our goal was to harness the natural self-assembly properties of caseins for protecting and delivering this important, but sensitive nutraceutical, DHA. Using spectrofluorescence we have shown, apparently for the first time, that casein can bind DHA with a relatively high affinity (K_b = (8.38 ± 3.12) × 10⁶ M⁻¹), and the binding ratio was 3–4 DHA molecules per protein molecule on average. Moreover, DLS particle characterization experiments have shown the formation of nanoparticles upon addition of DHA (predissolved in ethanol) to a casein solution. When calcium and phosphate were added (at 4 °C), DHA-loaded re-formed casein micelles (r-CM) with a size of 50–60 nm were obtained and there was no significant effect of the thermal treatment (74 °C, 20 s) on particle size. When casein nanoparticles (CNP) were prepared (at room temperature and without adding calcium and phosphate), DHA-loaded CNP with a diameter of 288.9 ± 9.6 nm were formed. Both the DHA-loaded r-CM and the DHA-loaded CNP systems showed a remarkable protective effect against DHA oxidation, demonstrating good colloidal stability and bioactive conservation throughout shelf life at 4 °C. These nanotechnologies may enable the enrichment of foods and beverages for promoting health of wide populations.

Problems and concerns among medical students--1975

Students at the University of Colorado School of Medicine were surveyed using an inventory of problems and conerns relating to their personal and academic lives. Results were to provide a data base for improvement of their educational environment via the ecosystem design process. The survey revealed that chief among student conerns are a lack of personal freedom, excessive academic pressures, and feelings of dehumanization. A marked trend toward increasing difficulty with thoughts of having chosen the wrong profession is noted over the four class levels. The authors offer several hypotheses relating to the underlying conditions responsible for these findings and discuss their possible relation to the current malpractice insurance crisis.     

Behavioral interventions to increase HPV vaccination acceptability among mothers of young girls.

Objective: To determine the most effective ways to present human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine risk and benefit information to mothers in Hispanic, African American, and White communities, to increase mothers’ intentions to vaccinate their daughters against HPV. Design: The study used a 3 × 2 between-subjects factorial design, involving 3 different risk presentation formats (graphical HPV statistics, nongraphical HPV statistics, or no-statistics control) and the presence or absence of rhetorical questions (RQ). Data were collected from a national sample of 471 mothers of girls ages 11–16. Main Outcome Variables: The primary outcome variable was mothers’ intention to vaccinate their daughters against HPV. Secondary outcomes included mothers’ self-reported message comprehension and perceptions of daughters’ vulnerability to HPV infection, infection severity, vaccine efficacy, and obstacles to immunization. Results and Conclusion: Results showed that both risk presentation format and RQs had an overall positive effect on mothers’ intention to vaccinate their daughters. However, the interventions appear to be more effective when used separately than when used in combination. Each of these interventions is brief and could easily be implemented by health care providers as well as in patient health communication literature. Meanings assigned by undergraduates to frequency statements of condom use

Studies of condom use must rely upon self-report data which may not be reliable and valid. This investigation examined how 192 undergraduates (17-48 years) interpret response categories (never, rarely, sometimes, most of the time, always) used in some surveys to assess frequency of condom use. Subjects completed a questionnaire that described a scenario of a couple who had engaged in sexual intercourse 20 times during the past 3 months. As part of the survey, there were 21 statements in which the stated number of times condoms were used varied from 0 to 20 (e.g., condoms were used 18 out of the 20 episodes of sexual intercourse). For each statement, subjects were instructed to circle the category they believed best matched the frequency with which condoms had been used: 31% indicated that using condoms 1 out of 20 times was an example of never using condoms; similarly, 23% indicated that using condoms 2 times out of the 20 encounters was an example of never using condoms, 40% indicated that condom use for 19 out of 20 encounters was always using condoms, whereas 23% applied the always label to condom use for 18 out of 20 encounters. These results generally support the validity of this type of condom use measurement, but suggest that caution is needed in interpretation. Implications of these findings are discussed with respect to health messages and research methodology.     

Personality changes with a group therapeutic experience in a human relations seminar.

"This study is concerned with the changes in behavior and attitude of a group of school administrators following a group experience. It attempts to investigate the hypothesis that given a permissive setting, the individuals within the group will move in a direction of greater warmth and understanding of themselves and others." National Conference on Postdoctoral Training in Professional Psychology.

The Ann Arbor Conference on postdoctoral training (held in October 1992) was the 1st national conference to focus on the articulation of standards for postdoctoral education and training in professional psychology. Experts in education, practice, and credentialing drafted a policy document addressing the purposes of postdoctural training; entrance requirements; program content, structure, and organization; supervision; faculty–staff; evaluation mechanisms; and recommendations for the promotion of excellence. The mental health care revolution: Will psychology survive?

Managed mental health care, which encompasses a wide variety of approaches, is a response to precipitous increases in health care expenditures, particularly as they relate to mental health care. The shift from what seemed certain to become a national health insurance program only 15 years ago to the profit-driven corporate health care industry of today is truly revolutionary. These profound changes are beginning to have a major impact on the independent practices of psychologists. In this article, psychologist practitioners are exhorted to recognize this new development in the marketplace. Data are cited that show the rapid shift from free choice care to various forms of managed care, and practitioners are urged to participate in shaping the changes that are now in process in order to develop a humane and effective system of mental health care.
