With increasing life span of patients with CF, more women with CF are becoming pregnant and others are seeking information about the risks involved during pregnancy and delivery. A striking limitation of the available information is the lack of large prospective studies of pregnant patients with CF matched for age and disease severity compared with their non-pregnant cohorts. A study investigating the effect of pregnancy on morbidity and mortality is being completed by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. We recommend that all women with CF be offered contraceptive measures and counseling on the maternal and fetal risks of pregnancy, including the genetic risks for the child. The issue of who will raise the child in the event of subsequent morbidity or maternal mortality should ideally be prospectively discussed.  相似文献

Junction breakdown voltage instability in a p-n junction formed in bulk silicon adjacent to a deep trench filled with polysilicon was investigated. The structure investigated consists of a 5-μm-deep trench filled with heavily p-doped polysilicon. The trench is open at the bottom and is consequently shorted to the p-substrate. The time-dependent behavior of the walkout or the breakdown voltage instability is similar to that reported for planar p-n junctions terminating on surface oxide. Results suggest that trapping of holes in the trench sidewall dielectric is responsible for this phenomenon. The product of trapping center concentration and capture cross section N σ is estimated to be 90 cm-1  相似文献

We present a novel evolutionary model for knowledge discovery from texts (KDTs), which deals with issues concerning shallow text representation and processing for mining purposes in an integrated way. Its aims is to look for novel and interesting explanatory knowledge across text documents. The approach uses natural language technology and genetic algorithms to produce explanatory novel hypotheses. The proposed approach is interdisciplinary, involving concepts not only from evolutionary algorithms but also from many kinds of text mining methods. Accordingly, new kinds of genetic operations suitable for text mining are proposed. The principles behind the representation and a new proposal for using multiobjective evaluation at the semantic level are described. Some promising results and their assessment by human experts are also discussed which indicate the plausibility of the model for effective KDT.  相似文献

Low energy (25 kV) electron beam irradiation of MOS capacitors is shown to produce neutral hole traps in thin ‘radiation hardened’ SiO2 films. These traps are found in an uncharged state after irradiation and are populated by passing a small hole current, generated by avalanche breakdown of then-type silicon substrate, through the oxide. From the time dependence of the observed trapping, a capture cross-section between 1 × 10∼−13 and 1 × 10−14 cm2 is deduced. The trap density is found to depend on the annealing conditions and incident electron beam dosage. The density of traps increases with incident electron beam exposure. Once introduced into the oxide by the radiation the traps can be removed by thermal anneals at temperatures above 500° C. Parallels between electron and hole trapping on these neutral centers are strong evidence for an amphoteric uncharged trap generated by ionizing radiation.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To test the usefulness of a commercial DNA hybridization assay for the detection of high-risk (HR) human papillomavirus (HPV) types in archival cervical smears and to compare the sensitivity with that of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using consensus primers. STUDY DESIGN: Stained material was scraped from archival slides and the pellet volume noted. DNA was extracted using silica/guanidinium isothiocyanate and the quality checked by amplification of the beta-globin gene. HR-HPV DNA was detected using a commercial hybrid capture assay (HCA) and the results compared with an in-house amplification system with consensus primers. RESULTS: Of 156 archival smears stored for 12-13 years, 20 were positive by HCA using an HR probe cocktail. Ninety-eight were also tested by PCR, and 35 were positive. The percentage of HPV-positive samples increased with the increasing size of the pellet. HR-HCA detected more positives in samples with high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (moderate/severe dyskaryosis). CONCLUSION: Both hybridization by HCA and amplification by PCR could be used to detect genital HPV in archival smears. The general primers PCR detected more positives than HR-HCA but included HPV 6/11. While variation in sample size and prolonged storage may reduce the quality of DNA, the use of archival material for longitudinal studies of HPV presence is potentially worthwhile.  相似文献

This paper considers recent developments in the understanding of diffuse pollution, its generation, transport and impacts. The relative importance of diffuse sources to total pollutant loading must be identified in order to develop appropriate strategies for management.
Research has indicated that individual diffuse pollutants respond differently to changing flow conditions and that there is a widespread misconception that higher flows are associated with lower pollutant concentrations. Evidence is presented to highlight this discrepancy and a rationale for load assessment is presented. The implications of this for monitoring within the context of the EU Water Framework Directive are discussed as are the implications for the mitigation of diffuse pollution.  相似文献

A continuous-flow column study was conducted to investigate the long-term effects of persulfate oxidation on the abundance and activity of the indigenous microbial community and phenanthrene-degrading bacteria in contaminated soil from a former manufactured gas plant (MGP) site. Approximately six pore volumes of a 20 g/L persulfate solution were introduced into the column, followed by simulated groundwater for 500 days. Soil samples were collected from the surface of the soil bed and along the column length immediately before and after persulfate injection and up to 500 days following injection. Exposure to persulfate led to a 2- to 3-log reduction in total bacterial 16S rRNA genes, severe inhibition of (14)C-acetate mineralization (as a measure of general microbial activity), and a decrease in community diversity. However, relatively rapid recovery of both bacterial gene abundance and activity was observed within 30 days after persulfate exposure. Mineralization of (14)C-phenanthrene was also inhibited but did not recover until 100 days postoxidation. Known phenanthrene-degrading bacterial groups decreased to below detection limits throughout the column, with recovery times from 100 to 500 days after persulfate injection. These findings suggest that coupling biological processes with persulfate oxidation is possible, although recovery of specific contaminant degraders may occur much later than the general microbial community recovers. Furthermore, the use of total bacterial quantity or nonspecific measures of activity as a surrogate for the recovery of contaminant degraders may be inappropriate for evaluating the compatibility of chemical treatment with subsequent bioremediation.  相似文献
