Narrow spectral linewidth characteristics of monolithic integrated-passive-cavity InGaAsP/InP semiconductor lasers

The spectral linewidth of 1.3 ?m monolithic integrated-passive-cavity (IPC) semiconductor laser is measured by a delayed self-heterodyne technique. It is found that the line-width is narrowed when longitudinal submode is suppressed. The narrowest linewidth obtained so far is 900 kHz at 6 mW output power.     

A case of carcinomatous peritonitis for which combination therapy of 5-FU, leucovorin and cisplatin was effective

This case report describes a case of carcinomatous peritonitis which showed a good response to the combination therapy of 5-FU, leucovorin and cisplatin. A 55-year-old man was admitted with complaints of meteorism due to ascites fluid. Ascitic examination showed a high concentration of CEA and CA19-9, and adenocarcinoma cells. Laboratory and radiological examination did not reveal the origin of the carcinoma, and laparotomy suggested an appendiceal origin. The combination chemotherapy with 5-FU, leucovorin and cisplatin was conducted for a total of 11 courses for 2 years with good QOL until his death. This therapy was suggested to be useful for inoperable carcinomatous peritonitis.     

Prolonged degradation of end-capped polyelectrolyte multilayer films

Cationic chitosan (CT) and anionic dextran sulfate (Dex) were layer-by-layer (LbL) assembled from aqueous solutions containing 1 M NaCl on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) substrate, and the original films ((CT-Dex)₃-CT)) were end-capped with LbL assembly from CT solutions containing 1 M NaCl and Dex solutions without NaCl. The enzymatic degradation of films by chitosanase was quantitatively analyzed by QCM in terms of numbers of end-capping steps. The degradation of films end-capped with (Dex-CT)₃ was considerably prolonged when compared to those end-capped with other end-capping steps. A mechanism for the prolonged degradation was proposed by quantitative QCM data and zeta potential results.     

The stability of monochlorotriazinyl reactive dyes on cellulose films in aqueous alkaline solutions containing peroxide bleaching agents

The stability of seven reactive (one difluoromonochloropyrimidinyl and six monochlorotriazinyl) dyes on cellulose immersed in sodium peroxoborate (PB) solution (UK–TO solution) containing tetraacetylethylenediamine (TAED) was examined using cellulosic films at 60 °C. The extent of dye loss that occurred from the dyed cellulosic films which were immersed in the UK–TO solution without detergent correlated closely to the ratings obtained using the BS 1006 UK–TO wash test. The dye loss that occurred from the dyed cellophane films was attributed to three contributions, namely, alkaline hydrolysis of dye–fibre bonds, oxidative fading of the dye chromophore by peroxides and cellulose degradation accelerated by PB and TAED. The alkaline hydrolysis of the dye–fibre bond and the extent of cellulose degradation in the UK–TO solution were the main contributions to the dye loss; dye oxidation was a minor factor in the dye loss mechanism. The physical bonding of the dye molecules reinforced the covalent dye–fibre bond stability towards the UK–TO solution.     

Synthesis of offset parabola with open-ended waveguides feed

The synthesis of an offset parabola with array feeds consisting of open-ended waveguides located around the focal point of the reflector is investigated. The approach is based on simulated annealing which has been applied to the analysis to two-dimensional phased arrays. Two cases of aperture distributions, uniform and Taylor with 30-dB sidelobe level, are discussed. Both results seem to be satisfactory     

Interfacial area concentration in bubbly flow

Interfacial area concentration is one of the most important parameters in two-phase flow. It is related to mass, momentum and energy transfer at the interface. In bubbly flow, it has close relation to bubble diameter. Interfacial area concentration was measured with particular attention to bubble diameter at inlet. The relationship between bubble diameter and interfacial area was theoretically considered. The possibilities of measurement methods of interfacial area concentration with multiprobes were discussed and a preliminary experiment for one of these methods was carried out.     

Electrolyte properties of 1-alkyl-2,3,5-trimethylpyrazolium cation-based room-temperature ionic liquids for lithium secondary batteries

The physicochemical and electrochemical properties of three 1-alkyl-2,3,5-trimethylpyrazolium cation-based room-temperature ionic liquids with various alkyl chain lengths were investigated. The temperature dependences of density, viscosity, and ionic conductivity were obtained by precise measurements. Electrolyte properties of these room-temperature ionic liquids were also examined from the viewpoint of their uses in lithium secondary batteries ([LiCoO₂ positive electrode|electrolyte|lithium metal negative electrode]). It was found that the alkyl chain length affects the charge–discharge performances of cells.     

External-cavity semiconductor laser with focusing grating mirror

A novel external-cavity semiconductor laser with a focusing grating mirror (FGM), which enables a single-mode oscillation at a specified wavelength, is proposed. The optical properties of the FGM, which is a computer-generated holographic grating with chirp and bend structure, are numerically analyzed. An optimally designed FGM for realizing laser oscillation at a specific wavelength of 1.30 μm is fabricated by using a computer-controlled electron-beam writing system. The fabricated FGM with grating area of 1×1 mm² is combined as an external feedback mirror with an InGaAsP-InP semiconductor laser of 1.3 μm wavelength range, and the lasing characteristics are experimentally measured. Stable and single-mode oscillations with spectral line width less than 10 MHz are observed
