In this study, a harmful algal bloom (HAB) index, commonly known as a red tide index (RI), was developed and tested using in situ measurements in the shallow Arabian Gulf where periodical occurrence of red tide has been reported. The index is based on a combination of ratio and difference of bands centred at 443, 531, and 547 nm. The index was applied to Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)/Aqua imagery and compared with other proxies of HABs such as chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentrations and fluorescence line height (FLH). Validation of the proposed index produced a positive correlation between the index and chlorophyll-a concentration with a determination coefficient (R2) of 0.61. Seasonality analysis of RI indicated that HABs in the Gulf region occur mainly in fall and winter. The inter-annual variations of RI showed similar patterns with the conventional chl-a product. This new index can provide insights into the dynamics of red tides and guidance for mitigation efforts, and assist in establishing an effective and timely forecasting and warning system for red tide.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of traffic data source (estimated vs. actual) on predicted progression rates of roughness and rutting for heavy-duty flexible pavements of rural freeways. Progression rates are predicted using calibrated HDM-4 models. The assessment is performed in terms of variations in maintenance intervention timing associated with the variations in progression rates. Time series pavement condition data (covering 3–5 years) have been collected for 7 sections of rural freeways for use in calibrating HDM-4 deterioration models. They range in length from 10 to 60.8 km and cover different traffic volumes, climate zones and subgrade soil types. For these sections, estimated annual average daily traffic (AADT), growth factors and assumed loading have been extracted from relevant database. Only six segments of these sections have Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) sites so relevant actual AADT, growth factors and axle load distributions have been extracted from WIM reports. The results of running the calibrated HDM-4 deterioration models using different traffic data show that actual traffic data from WIM sites result in higher rates of deterioration to that of estimated data for four sites, resulting in earlier intervention timing and higher present value agency cost. The other two sites have lower rates with actual data due to lower traffic loading than estimated.  相似文献

The role of brown adipose tissue in the mechanism of medium chain triglyceride (MCT)-induced thermogenesis was investigated. Under anesthesia, the interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT) was excised in male Sprague-Dawley rats, and the animals were fitted with gastrostomy tubes. After a 10-day recovery period, the animals were divided into two groups: one group received a diet containing MCT as 50% of calories, and the other group received an isocaloric diet containing long chain triglyceride (LCT). The diets were fed for 6 wk at a level of calorie intake that was 150% of the ad libitum intake of a parallel control group. During the last week of the study, resting and norepinephrine (NE)-stimulated O2 consumption and CO2 production were measured in a Noyons diaferometer. At the end of 6 wk, the animals were weighed and killed. The individual fat pads were dissected and weighed, and an aliquot of the right retroperitoneal fat pad was used to measure adipocyte size and number. The results showed that body weight and adipocyte size (but not adipocyte number) were significantly smaller in the MCT-fed compared to the LCT-fed animals. Resting as well as maximal NE-stimulated oxygen consumption values were significantly higher in the MCT-fed than the LCT-fed rats. It is concluded that the enhanced thermogenesis induced by MCT persists despite the absence of IBAT and that the phenomenon is likely related to more extensive oxidation of MCT-in contrast to LCT-derived fatty acids, thus leading to increased oxygen consumption, enhanced dissipation of energy as heat and diminished efficiency of weight gain and deposition of body fat. Increased environmental awareness and depletion of resources are driving industry to develop alternative fuels from renewable sources that are environmentally more acceptable. Biodiesel is a non petroleum based fuel that consists of alkyl esters from transestrification of the refined/edible types of vegetable oils alcohol and alkaline catalysts can be used. These catalysts require anhydrous conditions and feed stocks with low levels of free fatty acids (FFAs). Inexpensive feed stocks are used in biodiesel production to reduce its cost and to get rid of waste oils in environmentally friendly way. These oils may contain high levels of FFAs so it cannot be directly used with the base catalysts currently employed. Acid esterification reduces the FFAs content to the desirable level. The major factors that affect the conversion efficiency of the process are molar ratio of alcohol/oil, amount of catalyst, reaction temperature, catalyst type and stirring speed according to reaction duration. For this study, we used a model acid produced by mixing pure oleic acid with mixed oil (50% sunflower + 50% soybean oil). Methanol was used in the experiments due to its low cost. The best conversion efficiency obtained was 96.6% for a molar ratio of 6:1 at a temperature of 60 °C, 2.5% H2SO4 and stirring speed of 300 rpm. Finally, different types of waste cooking oil from home and restaurants were used to study the conversion efficiency compared with optimum conditions calculated for model acid oil to be used in biodiesel production with low cost.  相似文献

Amidoximated bagasse (Am‐B) was prepared by treating sugarcane bagasse fibers with acrylonitrile in the presence of sodium hydroxide followed by aqueous hydroxyl amine. Adsorption of some heavy metal ions, namely, Cu(II), Hg(II), Ni(II), Cr(III), and Pb(II) on the prepared Am‐B at different metal ion concentration, intervals, and temperatures was studied. Also, the selectivity of the prepared Am‐B toward adsorption of the aforementioned metal ions in an equimolar mixture was studied. The effect of regeneration of Am‐B using ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA), up to five times, on its adsorption capacity of the aforementioned metal ions was investigated. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. After oral administration, drug absorption rate is recognized to be dependent on two major factors: dissolution and intestinal cells permeability. Caco-2 monolayer cells have been largely used as a permeation study model. In this study, a numerical approach funded on an exponential first-order time relationship was tested to compare immediate- and controlled-release tablets of theophylline using a dissolution-permeation system. The dissolution performance using USP II paddle apparatus was coupled to the permeability studies investigated in Caco-2 cell monolayers. The dissolved samples were taken at different times; their pH and osmolarity were adjusted to render them suitable to Caco-2 permeability studies (osmolarity = 300 mosm, pH = 7.4). The experimental data show that the dissolution fits the exponential first-order relationship rate. The permeability values were in a range of 4.45 10- 6-5.28 10- 6 cm/s, and percentages of absorbed drug dose were dependent on the fraction initially present in the donor compartment, indicating that absorption of theophylline was dissolution rate limited. Plotting experimental absorbed fractions (Fa) against experimental dissolved fractions (Fd) show that permeation is the rate-limiting step in drug absorption process in the extended release form of theophylline. Our results demonstrate a general agreement between observed Fa/Fd relationships and theoretical Fa/Fd relationships obtained with our approach funded on dissolution and permeation behavior. We concluded that the couple dissolution-caco-2 system could be a useful tool to characterize intestinal permeation for a new formulation of a drug compared with the conventional one.  相似文献

In this work, an experimental and theoretical investigation of a frozen and hot water production unit with direct gas absorption is developed. Water/ammonia couple is used.A particular interest is given to the system performances evaluation such as exergetic efficiency and total exergy loss. Parameters analyzed are coefficients of performance, irreversibility and exergetic efficiency.Results show that the machine can reach a COP up to 65% and exergetic efficiency up to 18% for a working temperature and a condensation temperature of 120 °C and 18 °C, respectively. These performances decrease for a condensation temperature of 37 °C and 47 °C. Indeed, the engine is less efficient and presents more irreversibility, which is major in the pre-absorber and the absorber.An improvement of the machine cycle is proposed, in order to adapt it to low grade heat sources, using a compressor upstream of the pre-absorber. Performances of the new hybrid cycle are better than those of the real cycle.  相似文献
