Use of knee height to correct the body height of elderly Hispanics

Loss of stature in certain elderly subjects can be attributed to diseases such as osteoporosis, as well as to age and generational effects. In addition, many elders cannot stand straight for accurate measurement. For these cases, total height can be estimated with regression equations based on knee height. The aims of this study were, firstly, to evaluate the applicability of regression equations based on knee height for estimation of stature and, secondly, to document the differences between measured and estimated height in a group of elderly Hispanics with postural problems (n = 166) in comparison with a group of elderly Hispanic without postural problems (n = 270). Using both, estimated and measured height, we also calculated the body mass index (BMI) of both groups of elders. Statistical analyses were done with paired t-tests, within sex and study group. Within the group with postural problems, estimated height was higher than the measured height for both men (p < or = 0.001) and women (p < or = 0.001). There were no significant differences between measured and estimated height in the group without postural problems. Furthermore, in the group with postural problems, BMI values calculated with estimated height were lower than those estimated with the measured height, and these differences were also significant for both men (p < or = 0.001) and women (p < or = 0.001). With the aging of the Latin American population, there is a need for more nutrition and health research among elders. In order to do this we need to develop and use methods and criteria appropriate for each population.     

Effectiveness of dietary non-starch polysaccharides in experimental toxic hepatitis

The efficiency of some polysaccharides was investigated in mice with an experimental toxic hepatitis. Hepatitis was induced by the oral administration of 10% solution CCl4 in olive oil at a dosage of 3 ml/kg body weight every day during 7 days. After that tested substances were administrated every day 30-40 min before a feeding at a dosage of 150 mg/kg body weight during 14-21 days. Results showed that a calcium alginate, two low-methoxyl pectins (one with the degree of esterification about 50% and other with the degree of esterification less 5%), fucoidan, and chitozan, but not lambda-carrageenan and kappa-carrageenan, have beneficial affects on liver total lipid, glycogen, malondialdehyde, and diene conjugates as well as on blood total lipid and alanine aminotransferase activity in animals with experimental toxic hepatitis.     

Optical properties of high-density dispersions of particles: application to intralipid solutions

We propose to study the scattering properties of dense distributions of spherical scatterers by resorting to an iterative solution of the Foldy-Twersky equation for the propagation of the coherent field. As a result of the first step of the iterative procedure, the host medium is substituted by an effective medium of complex refractive index to account for the multiple-scattering processes that occur among the particles. Although we truncate the above-mentioned iterative procedure to the second step, the results of our calculations are in excellent agreement with previous experimental results of Zaccanti et al. ("Measurement of optical properties of high-density media," to be published in Applied Optics) for the scattering coefficient of Intralipid solutions up to a volume density of 15% and show a limited disagreement at a volume density of 22%.     

Laser-enhanced ionization with avalanche amplification: detection of cesium at fg/mL levels

The avalanche amplification of the laser-enhanced ionization signal of Cs atoms in a flame has been studied. Ionization of Cs atoms, enhanced by two-step excitation, was detected in hydrogen and propane flames. By employing the effect of avalanche amplification of electrons, high signal-to-noise ratio (approximately 10(4)) was obtained for a 100 ppt Cs solution. The extrapolated limit of detection was 30 fg/mL (ppq).     

基于气体分解产物检测技术发现的SF6电气设备放电缺陷分析

SF_6电气设备中常采用的气体分解产物检测是一种比较重要的带电检测技术手段,可以提前发现设备内部的早期故障和事故隐患并及时处理,这种检测技术也得到业界越来越多的关注和认同。文中首先依据大量的文献研究,详细阐述了SF_6气体及各种固体绝缘材料在放电或高温过热等异常情况下裂解机理及各种气体分解物(SO_2,SOF_2,HF,CF_4,H_2S,CO等)的形成过程;再根据几起现场实际案例的统计分析,发现检测电气设备中的气体组分种类和体积分数可以对设备的运行状况进行有效地评估;最后,通过解体后电气设备内部情况验证该检测技术的可行性。气体分解产物检测技术能够有效地分析出电气设备的实际情况,对今后实现电气设备的状态检修和管理维护有重要的参考价值。     

关于70—23型瀑落式磨机的经验

本文讨论了矿石可磨性及可选性试验的现状,MMC70-23型瀑落式磨机的工业应用及这种设备进一步应用的前景。在矿石可磨性研究及瀑落式磨机工业应用经验的基础上,运用各种操作条件(球的添加量占简体容积16％),获得有关各种矿石预处理工艺的设计资料,同时考虑了这些方法的优点和局限性。     

无比气魄远大目标打造西安音乐厅——大西北首座国际级音乐厅启用

2009年12月26日谭盾指挥上海爱乐乐团演出他的《奥运序曲》、《卧虎藏龙》和《纸乐》,作为西安音乐厅的开幕节目,千年古都皇城西安,终为中国幅员广大的大西北建成首座国际级水平的音乐厅。但在正式开幕前的双节（国庆、中秋）期间,西安音乐厅已为“大唐不夜城”的开城庆典,邀来中外三大乐团举行了一系列的演出,为此,我专程去了西安四日三夜,亲身体会到西安音乐厅的启用,不仅是两安新的地标式建筑的落成,     

德国古城乐旅：跨年跨国跨时空的歌剧《赵氏孤儿》 （下篇）

在德国中古名城艾尔福特（Erfurt）建成只有六年的艾尔福特剧院（Effnrt Thentre）观赏的原创新歌剧《赵氏孤儿》（Das Waisenkind）．是笔者2009年东奔西走,在欧美和中国内地都看了听了不少演出,印象至为深刻难忘的制作。该制作有关方面亦已争取将之搬演到中国大陆舞台．笔者亦期待能早日有机会在中国的土地上欣赏到此一源自中国历史戏曲故事的现代歌剧,
