Exploring the antigenic and genetic diversities of Babesia ovata, we obtained several field isolates from grazing cattle in the Okushiri island, Japan. Parasite isolation was greatly facilitated by using bovine red blood cell-substituted SCID mice (Bo-RBC-SCID mice), into which the blood samples of the cattle were inoculated. Isolates from different individuals within a herd of cattle were compared in immunoblot analysis with an anti-B. ovata serum and also in Southern blot analysis with a probe for the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene. In both analyses, the isolates exhibited banding patterns that were significantly different from each other. We were also able to obtain a series of parasite isolates from a single cow in different seasons of a nine months period, including winter when active vector ticks were not in the field environment. Different seasonal isolates showed different banding patterns in both immunoblot and Southern blot analyses. By contrast, these analyses detected little difference among the parasites that had been passed various times in Bo-RBC-SCID mice, where no specific immune responses should be generated. These results indicate that individual animals within a herd of cattle were infected with antigenically and genetically diversified populations of B. ovata, and that the parasites could persistently infect a single animal with dynamic change in their predominant subpopulations. 相似文献

We report an unusual case of carcinosarcoma of the colon. An 80-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with lower abdominal pain. Computed tomography showed a large pelvic mass, 18cm in maximal diameter, and barium enema and colonoscopy both showed a type-2 tumor in the sigmoid colon. We performed Hartmann's procedure with resection of the ileocolic segment. Immunohistochemical stains of the resected specimen revealed that most of the tumor consisted of spindle cell sarcoma with neural and muscle differentiation, while only the superficial area of an ulcerated lesion contained adenocarcinoma positive for carcinoembryonic antigen. The patient died of a fast-growing recurrent pelvic tumor 6 months postoperatively. Our experience of this case and our review of eight other cases in the English literature indicate that wide resection provides the best chance of cure, but careful postoperative follow-up is essential. 相似文献

The efficacy of collagen-sponge to reduce postoperative scar formation was investigated in 65 Japanese white rabbits that received laminectomy in the 7th and 8th thoracic vertebra. The defect after laminectomy was filled by collagen-sponge in 25 rabbits, by free fat in 20 rabbits, and by nothing in 20 rabbits as controls. The animals were sacrificed 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks and additional 5 rabbits of which defects were filled with collagen-sponge were sacrificed after 24 weeks. All the defects were examined histologically. At 4 weeks after laminectomy, the defects filled by collagen-sponge showed that fibrous tissue had invaded into the sponge, but there was no remarkable adhesion to the dura mater. At 8 weeks, the defect with collagen sponge showed foaming cells, and no thickening of the dura mater was observed. At 12 weeks, the grouping of foaming cells was partially replaced by fat cells. At 24 weeks, most of the foaming cells were replaced by fat cells, and the defect was then similar to that filled by free fat at 12 weeks. In contrast, the defect with no interposed membrane was already filled with fibrous tissue at 4 weeks, and adhesion to the dura mater was observed. Although the free-fat graft at 12 weeks postoperatively showed no remarkable adhesion around the dura mater, infiltration of fat tissue into the spinal canal was observed in 2 of 5 rabbits. These results indicated that collagen-sponge can be utilized as a new biomaterial to effectively prevent scar formation after laminectomy. 相似文献

We attempted to predict activity/dominance for soccer games, where activity is defined as the degree of activity of the game as perceived by the viewer, whereas dominance is the degree at which the viewer perceives a particular team to dominate over the other team. Such activity/dominance information would help a layman viewer understand the game. It would also enable construction of an automatic digest creation system that extracts scenes having high activity/dominance. There are two facets of this study: 1. The main part of the underlying prediction model consists of a Stick-Breaking Hidden Markov Model, where the data automatically estimates the number of states of the Markov process behind the data. 2. The data used in this paper is vector time-series data consisting of player, referee, and ball positions, together with team information, acquired by a set of fixed cameras. The problem was approached with a Bayesian framework where learning and prediction were implemented by three different methods: Markov Chain Monte Carlo, Expectation Maximization, and Variational Bayes. In this study, a 5.9‐inch foldable active‐matrix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED) display was developed. A folding test was performed repeatedly. The display survived the folding test (100,000 folds) with a curvature radius of 2 mm. To protect an organic light emitting diode (OLED) against moisture, inorganic passivation layers are provided on the upper and lower sides of the flexible display. Using our transfer technology, high density passivation layers can be obtained. The measured water vapor transmission rate of the layer is 7 × 10?6 g/m2?day or less, which improves OLED reliability. With these techniques, we have developed a book‐type display, which is repeatedly foldable like a book, and a tri‐fold display including a display area, which is foldable in three. 相似文献

Mixture models are ubiquitous in applied science. In many real-world applications, the number of mixture components needs to be estimated from the data. A popular approach consists of using information criteria to perform model selection. Another approach which has become very popular over the past few years consists of using Dirichlet processes mixture (DPM) models. Both approaches are computationally intensive. The use of information criteria requires computing the maximum likelihood parameter estimates for each candidate model whereas DPM are usually trained using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) or variational Bayes (VB) methods. We propose here original batch and recursive expectation-maximization algorithms to estimate the parameters of DPM. The performance of our algorithms is demonstrated on several applications including image segmentation and image classification tasks. Our algorithms are computationally much more efficient than MCMC and VB and outperform VB on an example. 相似文献

The authors report two cases of multicentric osteolytic lesions in the occipital bone without any history of head trauma. The excisional biopsy of the first case revealed that the lesion was multicentric but a continuous cavity with the subarachnoid space through various sizes of dural defect, and the cavities were covered by arachnoid lining. Together with the previously reported similar 5 cases, the characteristic common feature is multicentric osteolytic lesions in the occipital bone at advanced age without marginal sclerosis. "The cluster of arachnoid diverticula in the occipital bone (CADOB)" is probably the most appropriate term for these non-traumatic lesions with the following characteristics: elderly patients, occipital bone, midline, multiple, intact outer table, nonsclerotic margin and without history of trauma. This paper proposes a neuromorphic analog CMOS controller for interlimb coordination in quadruped locomotion. Animal locomotion, such as walking, running, swimming, and flying, is based on periodic rhythmic movements. These rhythmic movements are driven by the biological neural network, called the central pattern generator (CPG). In recent years, many researchers have applied CPG to locomotion controllers in robotics. However, most of these have been developed with digital processors and, thus, have several problems, such as high power consumption. In order to overcome such problems, a CPG controller with analog CMOS circuit is proposed. Since the CMOS transistors in the circuit operate in their subthreshold region and under low supply voltage, the controller can reduce power consumption. Moreover, low-cost production and miniaturization of controllers are expected. We have shown through computer simulation, such circuit has the capability to generate several periodic rhythmic patterns and transitions between their patterns promptly. 相似文献

The functions of Val483, Trp534, and Met729 in Euphorbia tirucalli β-amyrin synthase were revealed by comparing the enzyme activities of site-directed mutants against that of the wild type. The Gly and Ala variants with a smaller bulk size at position 483 predominantly afforded monocyclic camelliol C, which suggested that the orientation of the (3S)-2,3-oxidosqualene substrate was not appropriately arranged in the reaction cavity as a result of the decreased bulk size, leading to failure of its normal folding into the chair–chair–chair–boat–boat conformation. The Ile variant, with a somewhat larger bulk, afforded β-amyrin as the dominant product. Intriguingly, various variants of Trp534 exhibited significantly decreased enzymatic activities and provided no aberrantly cyclized products, although the aromatic Phe and Tyr residues were incorporated and the steric sizes of the aliphatic residues were altered. Therefore, the Trp534 residue does not stabilize the transient cation through a cation–π interaction. Furthermore, the Trp residue, with the largest steric bulk among all natural amino acids, is essential for high enzymatic activity. Robust CH–π complexation between the Val483 and Trp534 residues is proposed herein. Altering the steric bulk at the Met729 position afforded the pentacyclic skeletons. Thus, Met729 is positioned at the E-ring formation site. More detailed insights into the functions of the Val483, Trp534, and Met729 residues are provided by homology modeling. 相似文献
